  • Aggregation of modified celluloses in aqueous solution : transition from methylcellulose to hydroxypropylmethylcellulose solution properties induced by a low molecular weight oxyethylene additive
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0743-7463 .- 1520-5827. ; 28:38, s. 13562-13569
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Temperature effects on viscosity and aggregation behaviour of aqueous solutions of three different cellulose ethers: methylcellulose (MC), hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) and ethyl(hydroxyethyl)cellulose (EHEC), were investigated using viscosity and dynamic light scattering measurements as well as Cryo-TEM. In all cases increasing temperature reduces the solvent quality of water, which induces aggregation. It was found that the aggregation rate followed the order EHEC > HPMC > MC, suggesting that cellulose ethers containing some bulky and partly hydrophilic substituents assemble into large aggregates more readly than methylcellulose. This finding is discussed in terms of the organization of the structures formed by the different cellulose ethers. The temperature-dependent association behavior of cellulose ethers was also investigated in a novel way by adding diethyleneglycolmonobutylether (BDG) to methylcellulose aqueous solutions. When the concentration of BDG was at and above 5 wt%, methylcellulose adopted HPMC-like solution behaviour. In particular, a transition temperature where the viscosity was decreasing, prior to increasing at higher temperatures, appeared and the aggregation rate increased. This observation is rationalized by the ability of the amphiphilic BDG to accumulate at non-polar interfaces, and thus also to associate with hydrophobic regions of methylcellulose. In effect BDG is suggested to act as a physisorbed hydrophilic and bulky substituent inducing similar constraints on aggregation as the chemically attached hydroxypropyl groups in HPMC and oligo(ethyleneoxide) chains in EHEC.

  • A two-terminal silicon nanoribbon field-effect pH sensor
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 97:26, s. 264102-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on a two-terminal silicon nanoribbon (SiNR) field-effect pH sensor operated in electrolyte. Observed experimentally and confirmed by modeling, the sensor is activated by self-gating with a gate bias set by the potential difference of the two terminals. The effect of this gate bias on the SiNR conductance is modulated by the potential drop over the electrical double layer (EDL) established on the SiNR surface, similarly to the threshold voltage modulation by EDL in a three-terminal SiNR field-effect transistor with an independent gate electrode. The potential drop over EDL is determined by the pH value of the electrolyte.

  • Magnetic exchange interactions in B-, Si-, and As-doped Fe2P from first-principles theory
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 85:22, s. 224435-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Di-iron phosphide (Fe2P) is a parent system for a set of magnetocaloric materials. Although the magnetic ordering temperature (T-C = 215 K) of the stoichiometric composition is too low for room-temperature magnetic refrigeration, the partial replacement of P with B, Si, or As elements results in a steep increase in the magnetic ordering temperature. Doping leads to different equilibrium volumes and hexagonal axial ratios (c/a) within the same crystallographic phase over a wide concentration range. Here, using first principles theory, we decompose the change in the total magnetic exchange interaction upon doping into chemical and structural contributions, the latter including the c/a-ratio and volume effects. We demonstrate that for the investigated alloys the structural effect can be ascribed mainly to the decrease in the c/a ratio that strengthens the magnetic exchange interactions between the two Fe sublattices.

  • Microscopic theory of magnetism in the magnetocaloric material Fe2P1-xTx (T = B and Si)
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 86:4, s. 045126-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Landau phenomenological theory in combination with first-principles calculations was used to reveal the origin of the metamagnetic nature and the unusually strong dependence of the ordering temperature with doping of the Fe2P compound. We show that the magnetism of the two sublattices occupied by Fe atoms has an entwined codependency, which is strongly influenced by alloying. We furthermore demonstrate that a constrained disordered local moment approach combined with Monte Carlo simulations can only reproduce the experimental ordering temperatures in these technologically important prototype alloys for magnetocaloric refrigeration.

  • Biomechanical Properties of the Thoracic Aneurysmal Wall : Differences Between Bicuspid Aortic Valve and Tricuspid Aortic Valve Patients
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Annals of Thoracic Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 0003-4975 .- 1552-6259. ; 98:1, s. 65-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. The prevalence for thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) is significantly increased in patients with a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) compared with patients who have a normal tricuspid aortic valve (TAV). TAA rupture is a life-threatening event, and biomechanics-based simulations of the aorta may help to disentangle the molecular mechanism behind its development and progression. The present study used polarized microscopy and macroscopic in vitro tensile testing to explore collagen organization and mechanical properties of TAA wall specimens from BAV and TAV patients. Methods. Circumferential sections of aneurysmal aortic tissue from BAV and TAV patients were obtained during elective operations. The distribution of collagen orientation was captured by a Bingham distribution, and finite element models were used to estimate constitutive model parameters from experimental load-displacement curves. Results. Collagen orientation was almost identical in BAV and TAV patients, with a highest probability of alignment along the circumferential direction. The strength was almost two times higher in BAV samples (0.834 MPa) than in TAV samples (0.443 MPa; p < 0.001). The collagen-related stiffness (C-f) was significantly increased in BAV compared with TAV patients (C-f = 7.45 MPa vs 3.40 MPa; p = 0.003), whereas the elastin-related stiffness was similar in both groups. A trend toward a decreased wall thickness was seen in BAV patients (p = 0.058). Conclusions. The aneurysmal aortas of BAV patients show a higher macroscopic strength, mainly due to an increased collagen-related stiffness, compared with TAV patients. The increased wall stiffness in BAV patients may contribute to the higher prevalence for TAAs in this group.

  • Order–disorder induced magnetic structures of FeMnP0.75Si0.25
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 83:13, s. 134420-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of the magnetocaloric FeMnP0.75Si0.25 compound. Two types of samples (as quenched and annealed) were synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. We have found that minute changes in the degree of crystallographic order causes a large change in the magnetic properties. The annealed sample, with higher degree of order is antiferromagnetic with a zero net moment. The as-quenched sample has a net moment of 1.26 μB /f.u. and ferrimagnetic-like behavior. Theoretical calculations give rather large values for the Fe and Mn magnetic moments, both when occupied on the tetrahedral and pyramidal lattice site. The largest being the Mn moment for the pyramidal site reaches values as high as 2.8 μB /atom.

  • Strongly enhanced magnetic moments in ferromagnetic FeMnP0.5Si0.5
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 99:15, s. 152502-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The compound FeMnP(0.5)Si(0.5) has been studied by magnetic measurements, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and electronic structure and total energy calculations. An unexpectedly high magnetic hyperfine field for Fe atoms located at the tetrahedral Me(1) site in the Fe(2)P structure is found, The saturation moment derived from magnetic measurements corresponds to 4.4 mu(B)/f.u. at low temperatures, a value substantially higher than previously reported, but in accordance with the results from our electron structure calculations, This high saturation moment and the tunable first order ferromagnetic transition make the Fe(2-x)Mn(x)P(1-y)Si(y), system promising for magnetocaloric applications.

  • Combined Chromatin and Expression Analysis Reveals Specific Regulatory Mechanisms within Cytokine Genes in the Macrophage Early Immune Response
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 7:2, s. e32306-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Macrophages play a critical role in innate immunity, and the expression of early response genes orchestrate much of the initial response of the immune system. Macrophages undergo extensive transcriptional reprogramming in response to inflammatory stimuli such as Lipopolysaccharide (LPS). To identify gene transcription regulation patterns involved in early innate immune responses, we used two genome-wide approaches - gene expression profiling and chromatin immunoprecipitation-sequencing (ChIP-seq) analysis. We examined the effect of 2 hrs LPS stimulation on early gene expression and its relation to chromatin remodeling (H3 acetylation; H3Ac) and promoter binding of Sp1 and RNA polymerase II phosphorylated at serine 5 (S5P RNAPII), which is a marker for transcriptional initiation. Our results indicate novel and alternative gene regulatory mechanisms for certain proinflammatory genes. We identified two groups of upregulated inflammatory genes with respect to chromatin modification and promoter features. One group, including highly up-regulated genes such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF), was characterized by H3Ac, high CpG content and lack of TATA boxes. The second group, containing inflammatory mediators (interleukins and CCL chemokines), was up-regulated upon LPS stimulation despite lacking H3Ac in their annotated promoters, which were low in CpG content but did contain TATA boxes. Genome-wide analysis showed that few H3Ac peaks were unique to either +/-LPS condition. However, within these, an unpacking/expansion of already existing H3Ac peaks was observed upon LPS stimulation. In contrast, a significant proportion of S5P RNAPII peaks (approx 40%) was unique to either condition. Furthermore, data indicated a large portion of previously unannotated TSSs, particularly in LPS-stimulated macrophages, where only 28% of unique S5P RNAPII peaks overlap annotated promoters. The regulation of the inflammatory response appears to occur in a very specific manner at the chromatin level for specific genes and this study highlights the level of fine-tuning that occurs in the immune response.

  • Risk prediction in stable angina pectoris
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Investigation. - : Wiley. - 0014-2972 .- 1365-2362. ; 43:2, s. 141-151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND:Although stable angina pectoris often carries a favourable prognosis, it remains important to identify patients with an increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) complications. Many new markers of disease activity and prognosis have been described. We evaluated whether common and easily accessible markers in everyday care provide sufficient prognostic information.MATERIALS AND METHODS:The Angina Pectoris Prognosis Study in Stockholm treated 809 patients (248 women) with stable angina pectoris with metoprolol or verapamil double blind during a median follow-up of 3·4 years, with a registry-based extended follow-up after 9·1 years. Clinical and mechanistic variables, including lipids and glucose, renal function, ambulatory and exercise-induced ischaemia, heart rate variability, cardiac and vascular ultrasonography, and psychosocial variables were included in an integrated analysis. Main outcome measures were nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI) and CV death combined.RESULTS: In all, 139 patients (18 women) suffered a main outcome. Independent predictive variables were (odds ratio [95% confidence intervals]), age (1·04 per year [1·00;1·08], P = 0·041), female sex (0·33 [0·16;0·69], P = 0·001), fasting blood glucose (1.29 per mM [1.14; 1.46], P < 0·001), serum creatinine (1·02 per μM [1·00;1·03], P < 0·001) and leucocyte counts (1·21 per 106 cells/L [1·06;1·40], P = 0·008). Smoking habits, lipids and hypertension or a previous MI provided limited additional information. Impaired fasting glucose was as predictive as manifest diabetes and interacted adversely with serum creatinine. Sexual problems were predictive among men.CONCLUSIONS:Easily accessible clinical and demographic variables provide a good risk prediction in stable angina pectoris. Impaired glucose tolerance and an elevated serum creatinine are particularly important.
