  • Technologies in older people's care : Values related to a caring rationality
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nursing Ethics. - : Sage Publications. - 0969-7330 .- 1477-0989. ; 24:2, s. 125-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUNDThe tension between care-based and technology-based rationalities motivates studies concerning how technology can be used in the care sector to support the relational foundation of care.OBJECTIVESThis study interprets values related to care and technologies connected to the practice of good care.RESEARCH DESIGNThis research study was part of a development project aimed at developing innovative work practices through information and communication technology. Participants and research context: All staff (n = 18) working at two wards in a care facility for older people were asked to participate in interviews, and 12 accepted. We analysed the data using latent content analysis in combination with normative analysis. Ethical considerations: The caregivers were informed that participation was voluntary and that they could drop out at any time without providing any explanation.FINDINGSFour values were identified: 'presence', 'appreciation', 'competence' and 'trust'. Caregivers wanted to focus on care receivers as unique persons, a view that they thought was compromised by time-consuming and beeping electronic devices. Appraising from next-of-kin and been seen as someone who can contribute together with knowledge to handle different situations were other desires. The caregivers also desired positive feedback from next-of-kin, as they wanted to be seen as professionals who have the knowledge and skills to handle difficult situations. In addition, the caregivers wanted their employer to trust them, and they wanted to work in a calm environment.DISCUSSIONCaregivers' desire for disturbance-free interactions, being valued for their skills and working in a trustful working environment were interpreted as their base for providing good care. The caregivers' arguments are based on caring rationality, and sometimes they felt the technological rationality interfered with their main mission, providing quality care.CONCLUSIONIntroducing new technology in caring should support the caring relationship. Although society's overall technology-based approach may have gained popularity as a problem solver, technology-based rationality may compromise a care-based rationality. A shift in attitudes towards care as a concept on all societal levels is needed.

  • Gender diversity and innovation in mining : corpus-baseddiscourse analysis
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1756-6266 .- 1756-6274. ; 9:4, s. 359-376
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this study is to gain increased knowledge about gender diversity and innovation in mining by analyzing how women are discursively represented in relation to these two concepts, and in doing so establish how diversity management is received and communicated in the industry.Design/methodology/approachThe study is based on analysis of texts including references to gender diversity and innovation in mining found on the web. The tool used to retrieve the data has been WebCorpLive, a tool designed for linguistic analysis of web material.FindingsAlthough increased female representation is communicated as a key component in the diversity management discourse, based on the idea that diversity increases innovation and creativity, closer analysis of texts on diversity and innovation in mining shows that what women are expected to contribute with has little explicit connection with innovation.Research limitations/implicationsThe study contributes with increased knowledge about diversity management by providing an example of how it is received in a traditionally male-dominated industry.Practical implicationsOur findings indicate that for diversity management to have a real effect in mining, it needs to be based on gender equality and social justice motives, rather than on a business case rationale – the principal motive today. To enable this change stereotypical gender patterns, as shown in this study, need to be made visible and problematized among policy makers, practitioners and actors on all levels of the industry.Originality/valueThe study contributes with new knowledge about gender in the mining industry previously not attended to by using a method which so far has been sparsely used in discourse analysis, although pointed out as promising.

  • Work and Organization in a Digital Industrial Context
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Management Revue. - : Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft. - 0935-9915 .- 1861-9908. ; 28:3, s. 281-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are clear signs that digitalization attempts such as Industry 4.0 will becomemore apparent in workplaces. This development requires reflections and considerationsso we do not create more problems than we solve. In our paper, we have raisedseveral questions related to the Industry 4.0 that need answers: Is Industry 4.0 a discourse,an organizational model, or just technology? Does the requirement for flexibilitycall for a new labour market? How will Industry 4.0 affect competence andskill requirements? Will Industry 4.0 encourage a new gender order? Will Industry4.0 take over dangerous routine work or will old work environmental problems appearin new contexts and for other groups of workers? Can we rely on robots aswork mates or will they spy on us and report to management? Based on our analysis,we addressed four knowledge gaps that need more research in relation to thedigitalization of work: The relationship between new technology, working conditions, qualifications, identity, and gender; the future of the workers' collective;crowdsourcing in an industrial context; and human-machine interaction with a focuson integrity issues.

  • Job Rotation Meets Gendered and Routine Work in Swedish Supermarkets
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 23:2, s. 109-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish food retail trade employers are required to counteract the strain of checkout work through job rotation. As checkout work tends to be seen as a “women's job”, this makes the industry a potentially interesting site for negotiations within gendered organizations. Based on interviews with nine food retail trade managers, this study investigates how job rotation is incorporated into specific work organization models, focusing on the implications of work requirements, organizational divisions along the lines of gender, and the visibility of gender patterns in the managers' descriptions. Three different models of job rotation were distinguished analytically: limited, partial, and extended, differentiated by the extent to which job rotation was used. While these different models had specific effects on gender patterns of working within the stores, these effects seemed accidental rather than conscious, which corresponds with the managers' more general tendency to make gender into an organizational non-issue. Job rotation was also found to be enabled not by training but by the standardization of work tasks, suggesting that job rotation supports rather than challenges the general de-skilling affecting the industry.

  • Going from “paper and pen” to ICT systems : Perspectives on managing the change process
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Informatics for Health and Social Care. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1753-8157 .- 1753-8165. ; 42:2, s. 109-121
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Lack of participation from staff when developing information and communication technologies (ICT) has been shown to lead to negative consequences and might be one explanation for failure. Management during development processes has rarely been empirically studied, especially when introducing ICT systems in a municipality context. Objective: To describe and interpret experiences of the management during change processes where ICT was introduced among staff and managers in elderly care. Design: A qualitative interpretive method was chosen for this study and content analysis for analyzing the interviews. Results: “Clear focus–unclear process” demonstrated that focus on ICT solutions was clear but the process of introducing the ICT was not. “First-line managers receiving a system of support” gave a picture of the first-line manager as not playing an active part in the projects. First-line managers and staff described “Low power to influence” when realizing that for some reasons, they had not contributed in the change projects. “Low confirmation” represented the previous and present feelings of staff not being listened to. Lastly, “Reciprocal understanding” pictures how first-line managers and staff, although having some expectations on each other, understood each other’s positions. Conclusions: Empowerment could be useful in creating an organization where critical awareness and reflection over daily practice becomes a routine.

  • "Learn to blend in!" : A corpus-based analysis of the representation of women in mining
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 2040-7149 .- 2040-7157. ; 37:7, s. 698-712
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe aim of this study is to contribute with increased knowledge about gender in mining by exploring how women are discursively represented in texts produced by actors in the international mining arena.Design/methodology/approachThe study combines corpus linguistic methods and discourse analysis. It implies a combination of quantitative and qualitative analyses, where the former is used as the point of departure for the latter, and where the material analysed is chosen on the basis of certain selected search phrases. The source for the study is the web, and the search engine used for the retrieval of data is WebCorp Live, a tool tailored for linguistic analysis of web material.FindingsThe analysis reveals that although the overarching theme in the women-in mining discourse is that women are needed in the industry, the underlying message is that women in mining are perceived as problematic.Practical implicationsThe study shows that if mining is to change into a modern industry, the inherent hyper-masculine culture and its effects on the whole industry needs to be problematised and made evident. To increase the mere number of women, with women still heavily underrepresented, is not enough to break gender-biased discrimination.Originality/valueThe research contributes with new knowledge about gender in mining by using a method, which so far has had limited usage in (critical) discourse analysis.

  • Utmanad ordning?
