  • MAGIC reveals a complex morphology within the unidentified gamma-ray source HESS J1857+026
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 571
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. HESS J1857+026 is an extended TeV gamma-ray source that was discovered by H. E. S. S. as part of its Galactic plane survey. Given its broadband spectral energy distribution and its spatial coincidence with the young energetic pulsar PSR J1856+0245, the source has been put forward as a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) candidate. MAGIC has performed follow-up observations aimed at mapping the source down to energies approaching 100 GeV in order to better understand its complex morphology. Methods. HESS J1857+026 was observed by MAGIC in 2010, yielding 29 h of good quality stereoscopic data that allowed us to map the source region in two separate ranges of energy. Results. We detected very-high-energy gamma-ray emission from HESS J1857+026 with a significance of 12 sigma above 150 GeV. The differential energy spectrum between 100 GeV and 13 TeV is described well by a power law function dN/dE = N-0(E/1TeV)(-Gamma) with N-0 = (5.37 +/- 0.44(stat) +/- 1.5(sys)) X 10(-12) (TeV-1 cm(-2) s(-1)) and Gamma = 2.16 +/- 0.07(stat) +/- 0.15(sys), which bridges the gap between the GeV emission measured by Fermi-LAT and the multi-TeV emission measured by H.E.S.S.. In addition, we present a detailed analysis of the energy-dependent morphology of this region. We couple these results with archival multiwavelength data and outline evidence in favor of a two-source scenario, whereby one source is associated with a PWN, while the other could be linked with a molecular cloud complex containing an HII region and a possible gas cavity.

  • A trio of gamma-ray burst supernovae : GRB 120729A, GRB 130215A/SN 2013ez, and GRB 130831A/SN 2013fu

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry for three gamma-ray burst supernovae (GRB-SNe): GRB 120729A, GRB 130215A/SN 2013ez, and GRB 130831A/SN 2013fu. For GRB 130215A/SN 2013ez, we also present optical spectroscopy at t-t(0) = 16.1 d, which covers rest-frame 3000-6250 angstrom. Based on Fell lambda 5169 and Sill lambda 6355, our spectrum indicates an unusually low expansion velocity of similar to 4000-6350 km s(-1), the lowest ever measured for a GRB-SN. Additionally, we determined the brightness and shape of each accompanying SN relative to a template supernova (SN 1998bw), which were used to estimate the amount of nickel produced via nucleosynthesis during each explosion. We find that our derived nickel masses are typical of other GRB-SNe, and greater than those of SNe Ibc that are not associated with GRBs. For GRB 130831A/SN 2013fu, we used our well-sampled R-band light curve (LC) to estimate the amount of ejecta mass and the kinetic energy of the SN, finding that these too are similar to other GRB-SNe. For GRB 130215A, we took advantage of contemporaneous optical/NIR observations to construct an optical/NIR bolometric LC of the afterglow. We fit the bolometric LC with the millisecond magnetar model of Zhang & Meszros (2001, ApJ, 552, L35), which considers dipole radiation as a source of energy injection to the forward shock powering the optical/NIR afterglow. Using this model we derive an initial spin period of P = 12 ms and a magnetic field of B = 1.1 x 10(15) G, which are commensurate with those found for proposed magnetar central engines of other long-duration GRBs.

  • The European Integrated Tokamak Modelling (ITM) effort: achievements and first physics results
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 54:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A selection of achievements and first physics results are presented of the European Integrated Tokamak Modelling Task Force (EFDA ITM-TF) simulation framework, which aims to provide a standardized platform and an integrated modelling suite of validated numerical codes for the simulation and prediction of a complete plasma discharge of an arbitrary tokamak. The framework developed by the ITM-TF, based on a generic data structure including both simulated and experimental data, allows for the development of sophisticated integrated simulations (workflows) for physics application. The equilibrium reconstruction and linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability simulation chain was applied, in particular, to the analysis of the edgeMHDstability of ASDEX Upgrade type-I ELMy H-mode discharges and ITER hybrid scenario, demonstrating the stabilizing effect of an increased Shafranov shift on edge modes. Interpretive simulations of a JET hybrid discharge were performed with two electromagnetic turbulence codes within ITM infrastructure showing the signature of trapped-electron assisted ITG turbulence. A successful benchmark among five EC beam/ray-tracing codes was performed in the ITM framework for an ITER inductive scenario for different launching conditions from the equatorial and upper launcher, showing good agreement of the computed absorbed power and driven current. Selected achievements and scientific workflow applications targeting key modelling topics and physics problems are also presented, showing the current status of the ITM-TF modelling suite.

  • ICRF-code benchmark activity in the framework of the European task-force on integrated Tokamak Modelling
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : American Institute of Physics. - 9780735412101 ; , s. 291-294
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The grand aim of the Integrated Tokamak Modelling (ITM) task-force is to provide a flexible, modular and reliable plasma simulator in view of planning and analyzing ITER discharges. Since radio-frequency (rf) heating in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) is foreseen as one of the main additional heating systems in ITER, physics modules that simulate ICRF wave propagation and absorption are necessary for the ITM project. Here, we report on the status of the benchmark activity of ICRF codes, already imported in ITM environment platform. We consider various scenarios for ITER, limiting the comparisons to wave propagation and absorption in Maxwellian plasmas.

  • The PERCIVAL soft X-ray imager
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 9:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the increased brilliance of state-of-the-art Synchrotron radiation sources and the advent of Free Electron Lasers enabling revolutionary science with EUV to X-ray photons comes an urgent need for suitable photon imaging detectors. Requirements include high frame rates, very large dynamic range, single-photon counting capability with low probability of false positives, and (multi)-megapixels. PERCIVAL (''Pixelated Energy Resolving CMOS Imager, Versatile and Large'') is currently being developed by a collaboration of DESY, RAL, Elettra and DLS to address this need for the soft X-ray regime. PERCIVAL is a monolithic active pixel sensor (MAPS), i.e. based on CMOS technology. It will be back-thinned to access its primary energy range of 250 eV to 1 keV with target efficiencies above 90%. According to its preliminary specifications, the roughly 10 × 10 cm2, 3520 × 3710 pixel monolithic sensor will operate at frame rates up to 120 Hz (commensurate with most FELs) and use multiple gains within its 27 μm pixels to measure (e.g. at 500 eV) 1 to ∼ 105 simultaneously-arriving photons. Currently, small-scale front-illuminated prototype systems (160 × 210 pixels) are undergoing detailed testing with visible-light as well as X-ray photons. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

  • The bleeding site: a multi-level analysis of associated factors
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Periodontology. - : Wiley. - 0303-6979. ; 40:8, s. 735-742
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim To evaluate the association between the probability of a sulcus/pocket to bleed on probing (BoP) and patient related as well as site-specific characteristics. Methods Data from 88960 sites were retrospectively derived from the clinical record charts of 601 adult patients. BoP (positive/negative) had been recorded at the initial periodontal visit after probing pocket depth (PPD) assessment. To analyse the influence of patient-, tooth- and site-related factors on the probability for a site to be BoP+, a logistic, 3-level model was built with BoP as the binary outcome variable. Results (i) The mean probability to be BoP+ for a site with PPD=3mm was 18%, and the log odds increased by 0.69 for each 1mm increment in PPD; (ii) a significantly higher risk for BoP+ was observed for inter-proximal versus approximal surfaces, posterior teeth versus anterior teeth, females versus males, while a significantly lower risk was observed for smokers versus non-smokers; (iii) when controlling for the significant covariates, different BoP+ probabilities could still be observed among sites in patients with a different susceptibility to BoP. Conclusions The probability of a site to be BoP+ was associated with either site-specific (i.e. PPD, tooth aspect, tooth type) or patient-related factors (i.e. gender, smoking status).

  • Determination of reference values for optical properties of liquid phantoms based on Intralipid and India ink
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Biomedical Optics Express. - : Optical Society of America. - 2156-7085. ; 5:7, s. 2037-2053
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multi-center study has been set up to accurately characterize the optical properties of diffusive liquid phantoms based on Intralipid and India ink at near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Nine research laboratories from six countries adopting different measurement techniques, instrumental set-ups, and data analysis methods determined at their best the optical properties and relative uncertainties of diffusive dilutions prepared with common samples of the two compounds. By exploiting a suitable statistical model, comprehensive reference values at three NIR wavelengths for the intrinsic absorption coefficient of India ink and the intrinsic reduced scattering coefficient of Intralipid-20% were determined with an uncertainty of about 2% or better, depending on the wavelength considered, and 1%, respectively. Even if in this study we focused on particular batches of India ink and Intralipid, the reference values determined here represent a solid and useful starting point for preparing diffusive liquid phantoms with accurately defined optical properties. Furthermore, due to the ready availability, low cost, long-term stability and batch-to-batch reproducibility of these compounds, they provide a unique fundamental tool for the calibration and performance assessment of diffuse optical spectroscopy instrumentation intended to be used in laboratory or clinical environment. Finally, the collaborative work presented here demonstrates that the accuracy level attained in this work for optical properties of diffusive phantoms is reliable.
