Radiological impact of naturally occurring radionuclides in bottled water

- Consumption of bottled water is increasing year after year in Europe. Due to the local geology from where the water is extracted; bottled water could be enhanced with radionuclides. This study focuses on the activity concentrations of 210Po, 210Pb, 226Ra, 228Ra, 234U and 238U in bottled water available in the Swedish market, to assess the radiological impact to different age groups. The results showed that among the 26 brands studied, only three could exceed the threshold value for drinking water: 0.1 mSv/year. For two brands, the dose was mainly due to the activity concentrations of 238U and 234U being up to 714 and 1162 mBq/L, respectively. While for one brand, the dose was mainly due to the activity concentration of both 210Po and 210Pb being around 100 mBq/L. For the remainder brands, 228Ra was the main contributor to the committed effective dose.

Unusually large magnetic moment and tricritical behavior of the CMR compound NaCr 2 O 4 revealed with high resolution neutron diffraction and μ + SR

- The mixed valence Cr3+/Cr4+ compound NaCr2O4, hosts a plethora of unconventional electronic properties. In the present study, muon spin rotation/relaxation ( μ + SR) and high-resolution time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction measurements were carried out on high-quality samples to clarify the complex magnetic ground state of this unique material. We identified a commensurate canted antiferromagnetic order (C-AFM) with a canting angle of the Cr spin axial vector equal to θ c = ( 8.8 ± 0.5 ) ∘ , and an estimated Cr moment μ C r C ∼ ( 4.30 ± 0.01 ) μ B . Such an unusually large value of μ C r C is compatible with the existence of high-spin Cr sites created by the presence of an unconventional negative charge transfer state in NaCr2O4. In addition to the C-AFM structure, a novel magnetic supercell was also revealed. Such supercell display an incommensurate (IC)-AFM propagation vector (0 0 1 2 − δ ), having a Cr moment μ C r I C = ( 2.20 ± 0.03 ) μ B . It is suggested that the C-AFM and IC-AFM modulations have two different electronic origins, being due to itinerant and localized contributions to the magnetic moment respectively. Finally, the direct measurement of the magnetic order parameter for the C-AFM structure provided a value of the critical exponent β = 0.245 ≈ 1 4 , suggesting a non conventional critical behavior for the magnetic phase transition in NaCr2O4

- Systematic improvement of quality of care at the end of life is still scarce. The regional palliative care service in Skåne, which has eight units covering a population of almost 1.3 million inhabitants, has systematically used the Swedish Register of Palliative Care (SRPC, http://www.palliativ.se/ ) for care development. 9 out of 12 of the indicators improved significantly in 2014 compared to 2013. Through transparency of registered data and regular feedback to the department's units we have been able to encourage the exchange of experiences between the units, provide opportunities for internal and external benchmarking and also prioritize topics for teaching and training. The positive results must be interpreted with caution as this is a non-controlled follow-up. The exact correlation between recorded data and value for the patient is mainly unknown and requires further studies.

Physics potential of the ESS nu SB

- The ESS.SB project proposes to base a neutrino "Super Beam" of unprecedented luminosity at the European Spallation Source. The original proposal identified the second peak of the oscillation probability as the optimal to maximize the discovery potential to leptonic CP violation. However this choice reduces the statistics at the detector and penalizes other complementary searches such as the determination of the atmospheric oscillation parameters, particularly the octant of.23 as well as the neutrino mass ordering. We explore how these shortcomings can be alleviated by the combination of the beam data with the atmospheric neutrino sample that would also be collected at the detector. We find that the combination not only improves very significantly these drawbacks, but also enhances both the CP violation discovery potential and the precision in the measurement of the CP violating phase, forwhich the facilitywas originally optimized, by lifting parametric degeneracies. We then reassess the optimization of the ESS.SB setup when the atmospheric neutrino sample is considered, with an emphasis in performing a measurement of the CP violating phase as precise as possible. We find that for the presently preferred value of d - p/2, shorter baselines and longer running time in neutrino mode would be optimal. In these conditions, a measurement better than 14. would be achievable for any value of the.23 octant and the mass ordering. Conversely, if present and next generation facilities were not able to discover CP violation, longer baselines and more even splitting between neutrino and neutrino modes would be preferable. These choices would allow a 5s discovery of CP violation for around a 60% of the possible values of d and to determine its value with a precision around 6. if it is close to 0 or pi.

- Germanic peoples appear strongly on the stage of history during late antiquity. With the advent of so-called “Barbarian Invasions” (or “folk migrations”, if the perspective is that of the invaders), raids by Germanic tribes gradually turn into migrations of ethnic groups settling in the areas they strike. With the fall of the Empire and the creation of Barbarian Kingdoms, this phenomenon leads to lasting effects on local languacultures. In the Italian peninsula, Goths, Langobards, and Franks, impacted the evolution of vulgar Latin, leaving visible traces in the Italian language.The Germanic element of Italian vocabulary is represented by a multitude of toponyms and anthroponyms; it characterises specific lexical areas, and is observable in basic vocabulary and derivational morphology. These elements (systematically collected within the LEI project) are an extremely interesting object of study, on several levels.In a diachronic perspective: analysing their presence at different stages, and as an instrument for dating.In a diatopic perspective: as a criterion of dialectological analysis, also frequently linked to geosynonyms and so-called “parole bandiera”. (Besides also being a differentiating criterion between romance languages).In a sociolinguistic and stylistic perspective: considering the value of a Latin or a Germanic equivalent, in context.It is moreover ultimately relevant to consider an approach involving Germanic elements in Italian as an effective pedagogical tool. They can prove extremely useful, not only in educating about the history of the languaculture of the Italian peninsula, but also in teaching basic language-competence, and in the expansion of vocabulary, exploiting intercomprehension in learners with a Germanic mother tongue in general, and a Scandinavian one in particular (and vice versa).
