  • Technical design report for the PANDA (AntiProton Annihilations at Darmstadt) Straw Tube Tracker
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 49:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole PANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described.

  • The Miniball spectrometer
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 49:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Miniball germanium detector array has been operational at the REX (Radioactive ion beam EXperiment) post accelerator at the Isotope Separator On-Line facility ISOLDE at CERN since 2001. During the last decade, a series of successful Coulomb excitation and transfer reaction studies have been performed with this array, utilizing the unique and high-quality radioactive ion beams which are available at ISOLDE. In this article, an overview is given of the technical details of the full Miniball setup, including a description of the.-ray and particle detectors, beam monitoring devices and methods to deal with beam contamination. The specific timing properties of the REX-ISOLDE facility are highlighted to indicate the sensitivity that can be achieved with the full Miniball setup. The article is finalized with a summary of some physics highlights at REX-ISOLDE and the utilization of the Miniball germanium detectors at other facilities.

  • Coulomb excitation of Ga-73
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 82:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The B(E2; I-i -> I-f) values for transitions in Ga-71(31)40 and Ga-73(31)42 were deduced from a Coulomb excitation experiment at the safe energy of 2.95 MeV/nucleon using post-accelerated beams of Ga-71,Ga-73 at the REX-ISOLDE on-line isotope mass separator facility. The emitted gamma rays were detected by the MINIBALL gamma-detector array, and B(E2; I-i -> I-f) values were obtained from the yields normalized to the known strength of the 2(+) -> 0(+) transition in the Sn-120 target. The comparison of these new results with the data of less neutron-rich gallium isotopes shows a shift of the E2 collectivity toward lower excitation energy when adding neutrons beyond N = 40. This supports conclusions from previous studies of the gallium isotopes, which indicated a structural change in this isotopic chain between N = 40 and 42. Combined with recent measurements from collinear laser spectroscopy showing a 1/2(-) spin and parity for the ground state, the extracted results revealed evidence for a 1/2(-), 3/2(-) doublet near the ground state in Ga-73(31)42 differing by at most 0.8 keV in energy.

  • Ion Energization and Escape on Mars and Venus
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Space Science Reviews. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0038-6308 .- 1572-9672. ; 162:1-4, s. 173-211
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mars and Venus do not have a global magnetic field and as a result solar wind interacts directly with their ionospheres and upper atmospheres. Neutral atoms ionized by solar UV, charge exchange and electron impact, are extracted and scavenged by solar wind providing a significant loss of planetary volatiles. There are different channels and routes through which the ionized planetary matter escapes from the planets. Processes of ion energization driven by direct solar wind forcing and their escape are intimately related. Forces responsible for ion energization in different channels are different and, correspondingly, the effectiveness of escape is also different. Classification of the energization processes and escape channels on Mars and Venus and also their variability with solar wind parameters is the main topic of our review. We will distinguish between classical pickup and 'mass-loaded' pickup processes, energization in boundary layer and plasma sheet, polar winds on unmagnetized planets with magnetized ionospheres and enhanced escape flows from localized auroral regions in the regions filled by strong crustal magnetic fields.

  • Role of Magnetism in the Formation of a Short-Range Order in Iron-Silicon Alloys
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics. - 1063-7761 .- 1090-6509. ; 112:5, s. 848-859
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formation of a short-range order in soft magnetic Fe-Si alloys depending on the annealing temperature has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. The B2-type short-range order has been observed in samples quenched from temperatures T > T(C) (where T(C) is the Curie temperature) with the content c(Si) close to the boundary of the two-phase region. Annealing at temperatures T < T(C) for the content c(Si) >= 0.08 leads to an increase in the fraction of regions with the D0(3)-type short-range order. The mechanism of the formation of the short-range order in Fe-Si solid solutions has been analyzed by the Monte Carlo simulation with the ab initio calculated interatomic interaction parameters. It has been shown that the energy of the effective Si-Si interaction in bcc iron strongly depends on the magnetic state of the matrix. As a result, the B2-type short-range order is formed at T > T(C) and is fixed at quenching, whereas the D0(3)-type short-range order is equilibrium in the ferromagnetic state. The results reveal the decisive role of magnetism in the formation of the short-range order in Fe-Si alloys and allow the explanation of the observed structural features of the alloys depending on the composition and temperature.

  • Anisotropic Eliashberg function and electron-phonon coupling in doped graphene
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 88:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate, with high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the spectral function of potassium-doped quasi-free-standing graphene on Au. Angle-dependent x-ray photoemission and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that potassium intercalates into the graphene/Au interface, leading to an upshift of the K-derived electronic band above the Fermi level. This empty band is what makes this system perfectly suited to disentangle the contributions to electron-phonon coupling coming from the pi band and K-derived bands. From a self-energy analysis we find an anisotropic electron-phonon coupling strength lambda of 0.1 (0.2) for the K Gamma (K M) high-symmetry directions in momentum space, respectively. Interestingly, the high-energy part of the Eliashberg function which relates to graphene's optical phonons is equal in both directions but only in K M does an additional low-energy part appear.

  • Molecular Sinkers : X-ray Photoemission and Atomistic Simulations of Benzoic Acid and Benzoate at the Aqueous Solution/Vapor Interface
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 116:43, s. 13017-13023
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work we, for the first time, provide a detailed microscopic picture of the behavior of benzoic acid at the aqueous solution/vapor interface in its neutral as well as in its dissociated form (benzoate). This is achieved through a combination of highly surface-sensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments and fully atomistic molecular simulations. We show that drastic changes occur in the interface behavior of the neutral acid upon release of the proton. The benzoic acid molecules are found to be strongly adsorbed in the interface layer with the planes of the aromatic rings oriented almost parallel to the water surface. In contrast, in the benzoate form the carboxylate group shows a sinker-like behavior while the aromatic ring acts as a buoy, oriented nearly perpendicular to the surface. Furthermore, a significant fraction of the molecular ions move from the interface layer into the bulk of the solution. We rationalize these findings in terms of the very different hydration properties of benzoic acid's carboxylic group in the two charge states. The molecule has an amphiphilic nature and the deprotonation thus changes the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance between the nonpolar aromatic and the polar carboxylic parts of the molecule. That, consequently, leads to a pronounced reorientation of the molecule at the interface.

  • Nitrogen-Doped Graphene: Efficient Growth, Structure, and Electronic Properties
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 11:12, s. 5401-5407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel strategy for efficient growth of nitrogen-doped graphene (N-graphene) on a large scale from s-triazine molecules is presented. The growth process has been unveiled in situ using time-dependent photoemission. It has been established that a postannealing of N-graphene after gold intercalation causes a conversion of the N environment from pyridinic to graphitic, allowing to obtain more than 8096 of all embedded nitrogen in graphitic form, which is essential for the electron doping in graphene. A band gap, a doping level of 300 meV, and a charge-carrier concentration of similar to 8 x 10(12) electrons per cm 2, induced by 0.4 atom % of graphitic nitrogen, have been detected by angle-resolved photoeinission spectroscopy, which offers great promise for implementation of this system in next generation electronic devices.
