  • Long-range angular correlations on the near and away side in p-Pb collisions at root S-NN=5.02 TeV

    • Angular correlations between charged trigger and associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV for transverse momentum ranges within 0.5 < P-T,P-assoc < P-T,P-trig < 4 GeV/c. The correlations are measured over two units of pseudorapidity and full azimuthal angle in different intervals of event multiplicity, and expressed as associated yield per trigger particle. Two long-range ridge-like structures, one on the near side and one on the away side, are observed when the per-trigger yield obtained in low-multiplicity events is subtracted from the one in high-multiplicity events. The excess on the near-side is qualitatively similar to that recently reported by the CMS Collaboration, while the excess on the away-side is reported for the first time. The two-ridge structure projected onto azimuthal angle is quantified with the second and third Fourier coefficients as well as by near-side and away-side yields and widths. The yields on the near side and on the away side are equal within the uncertainties for all studied event multiplicity and p(T) bins, and the widths show no significant evolution with event multiplicity or p(T).   • The Negative Impact of Incomplete Angiographic Revascularization on Clinical Outcomes and Its Association With Total Occlusions : The SYNTAX (Synergy Between Percutaneous Coronary Intervention with Taxus and Cardiac Surgery) Trial

    • OBJECTIVES:The study sought to evaluate the clinical impact of angiographic complete (CR) and incomplete (ICR) revascularization and its association with the presence of total occlusions (TO), after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery in the "all-comers" SYNTAX (Synergy Between Percutaneous Coronary Intervention with Taxus and Cardiac Surgery) trial.BACKGROUND:In patients with complex coronary artery disease undergoing PCI or CABG, the long-term prognostic implications of CR versus ICR is unsettled.METHODS:In this post hoc study, consisting of randomized (n = 1,800) and nested PCI (n = 198) and CABG (n = 649) registries, 4-year clinical outcomes were compared in groups, with and without angiographic CR, in the PCI and CABG arms. Clinical outcomes were analyzed with Kaplan-Meier estimates, log-rank comparisons, and Cox regression analyses. Multivariate predictors of ICR were determined. Similar analyses were undertaken in the TO and non-TO treated groups of both study arms.RESULTS:Angiographic CR was achieved in 52.8% of the PCI arm and 66.9% of the CABG arm. Within the PCI and CABG arms, ICR (compared with CR) seemed to be a surrogate marker of a greater burden of anatomical coronary complexity and clinical comorbidity and was associated with significantly higher frequencies of 4-year mortality, all-cause revascularization, stent thrombosis (PCI arm), and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events. The presence of a TO was the strongest independent predictor of ICR after PCI (hazard ratio: 2.70, 95% confidence interval: 1.98 to 3.67, p < 0.001). Eight hundred and forty patients (PCI: 26.3%, CABG: 36.4%, p < 0.001) were identified to have 1,007 TOs, with 68.1% of TOs located in the proximal-mid coronary vasculature. The findings associating ICR (compared with CR) with higher frequencies of 4-year mortality and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events remained consistent in the TO-treated groups in the PCI and CABG arms.CONCLUSIONS:Within the PCI and CABG arms of the all-comers SYNTAX trial, angiographically determined ICR has a detrimental impact on long-term clinical outcomes, including mortality. This effect remained consistent in patients with and without TOs.

  • Ten-Year Follow-up of Cluster-based Asthma Phenotypes in Adults A Pooled Analysis of Three Cohorts

    • Rationale: The temporal stability of adult asthma phenotypes identified using clustering methods has never been addressed. Longitudinal cluster-based methods may provide novel insights in the study of the natural history of asthma. Objectives: To compare the stability of cluster-based asthma phenotype structures a decade apart in adults and to address the individuals' phenotypic transition across these asthma phenotypes. Methods: The latent transition analysis was applied on longitudinal data (twice, 10 yr apart) from 3,320 adults with asthma who took part in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey, the Swiss Cohort Study on Air Pollution and Lung and Heart Diseases in Adults, or the Epidemiological Study on Genetics and Environment of Asthma. Nine variables covering personal and phenotypic characteristics measured twice, 10 years apart, were simultaneously considered. Measurements and Main Results: Latent transition analysis identifies seven asthma phenotypes (prevalence range, 8.4-20.8%), mainly [GRAPHICS] characterized by the level of asthma symptoms ( low, moderate, high), the allergic status, and pulmonary function. Phenotypes observed 10 years apart showed strong similarities. The probability of membership in the same asthma phenotype at both times varied across phenotypes from 54 to 88%. Different transition patterns were observed across phenotypes. Transitions toward increased asthma symptoms were more frequently observed among nonallergic phenotypes as compared with allergic phenotypes. Results showed a strong stability of the allergic status over time. Conclusions: Adult asthma phenotypes identified by a clustering approach, 10 years apart, were highly consistent. This study is the first to model the probabilities of transitioning over time between comprehensive asthma phenotypes.

    • Background: Mesoporous silica particles are highly promising nanomaterials for biomedical applications. They can be used to improve bioavailability, solubility and drug stability and to protect drugs from the acidic conditions of the stomach, leading to increased drug effectiveness. Their biocompatibility in vivo has recieved little attention, in particular regarding oral administration. Aim: To study the oral tolerance of micron-sized nanoporous folic acid-templated material-1 (cylindrical, 2D hexagonal pore structure) and nanometer-sized anionic-surfactant-templated mesoporous silica material-6 (cylindrical, 3D cubic pore structure) mesoporous silica particles in Sprague Dawley rats. Materials & methods: A dose stepwise procedure or range finding test was followed by a consequent confirmatory test. The confirmatory test included daily administrations of 2000 and 1200 mg/kg doses for nanoporous folic acid-templated material-1 and anionic-surfactant-templated mesoporous silica material-6, respectively. Results: The maximum tolerated dose for anionic-surfactant-templated mesoporous silica material-6 was not reached. Similar results were observed for nanometer-sized anionic-surfactant-templated mesoporous silica material-1 in most of the animals, although adverse effects were observed in some animals that are most probably due to the administration by oral gavage of the formulated particles. Conclusion: The results are promising for the use of mesoporous silica materials as drug-delivery systems in oral administration.

    • Specially designed steels with carbon contents from 0.6 to 1.0 wt.% were isothermally transformed at very low temperatures, between 220 and 270 °C, in order to obtain a nano-structured bainitic microstructure. It is shown that the wear resistance in dry rolling-sliding of these nano-structured steels is significantly superior to that ofbainitic steels transformed at higher temperatures with similar hardness values.In addition to the highly refined microstructure, the transformation under strain to martensite (TRIP effect), contributes to the plasticity of the nano-scaled steels, increasing surface hardness during testing, thus reducing the wear rate.
