Geographic diversification and the survival of born-globals

- The staged internationalization model posits that firms internationalize incrementally over time. However, born-globals are less likely to follow a more gradual model of staged internationalization, and they must decide on the scope of internationalization at their founding to exploit entrepreneurial opportunities on a global scale. Because returns from international expansion must be considered along with the risk of failure, we propose that born-globals’ local industry conditions moderate the relationship between the scope of intraregional diversification (geographic diversification within a region) or interregional diversification (geographic diversification across different regions) and survival. Using a sample of 680 Swedish born-globals founded in 2002, 2003, or 2004 and followed until 2010; data from Swedish Customs; and archival performance data, we find that interregional geographic diversification increases—and that intraregional diversification decreases—the likelihood of failure, which declines further when born-globals undertake intraregional geographic diversification under higher environmental dynamism in the home country industry. Conversely, undertaking interregional geographic diversification even when the home country industry is munificent increases the likelihood of failure (marginally significant). The findings are robust to several alternative specifications.

Customer experiences of phone encounters in a restaurant context

- The research presented in this paper focuses on table reservations made by phone regarded as early events in customers’ total restaurant experiences. A majority of table reservations still are made by phone and there is little research about how reservation phone encounters at restaurants are handled in practice. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe how restaurants handle customers’ reservation phone calls, as documented by customers and whether these voice-to-voice encounters influence customers’ expectations. In addition, customers’ satisfaction with the total dining experience was examined and compared with customers’ perception of the phone encounter. The study was conducted in two steps. First, 209 phone encounters were documented by restaurant customers. Second, customers’ satisfaction with their dining experience was examined using a survey and 47 observations of customers’ ratings of these two points of measurement were compared. The results indicate that organizational routines such as phone reservations and how they are treated by restaurants are an important precondition for customers’ service experiences. For restaurants, especially exclusive à la carte restaurants, there is potential to further develop how they handle phone encounters towards a more proactive approach, keeping in mind that a phone reservation is not only a formal order, but also part of a customer’s total experience.

Salvage radiation therapy in prostate cancer: relationship between rectal dose and long-term, self-reported rectal bleeding

- Purpose To quantify the relationship between the rectal dose distribution and the prevalence of self-reported rectal bleeding among men treated with salvage radiotherapy (ST) delivered by three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) for prostate cancer. To use this relationship to estimate the risk of rectal bleeding for a contemporary cohort of patients treated with volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) ST. Methods and patients Rectal bleeding of any grade was reported by 56 (22%) of 255 men in a PROM-survey at a median follow-up of 6.7 years after 3DCRT ST. Treatment plan data were extracted and dose-response relationships for the rectal volumes receiving at least 35 Gy (V-35Gy) or 63 Gy (V-63Gy) were calculated with logistic regression. These relationships were used to estimate the risk of rectal bleeding for a cohort of 253 patients treated with VMAT ST. Results In the dose-response analysis of patients in the 3DCRT ST cohort, both rectal V(35Gy)and V(63Gy)were statistically significant parameters in univariable analysis (p = 0.005 and 0.003, respectively). For the dose-response models using either rectal V(35Gy)or V-63Gy, the average calculated risk of rectal bleeding was 14% among men treated with VMAT ST compared to a reported prevalence of 22% for men treated with 3DCRT ST. Conclusions We identified dose-response relationships between the rectal dose distribution and the risk of self-reported rectal bleeding of any grade in a long-term perspective for men treated with 3DCRT ST. Furthermore, VMAT ST may have the potential to decrease the prevalence of late rectal bleeding.

- The use of speech as an interaction modality has grown considerably through the integration of Intelligent Personal Assistants (IPAs- e.g. Siri, Google Assistant) into smartphones and voice based devices (e.g. Amazon Echo). However, there remain significant gaps in using theoretical frameworks to understand user behaviours and choices and how they may applied to specific speech interface interactions. This part-day multidisciplinary workshop aims to critically map out and evaluate theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches across a number of disciplines and establish directions for new paradigms in understanding speech interface user behaviour. In doing so, we will bring together participants from HCI and other speech related domains to establish a cohesive, diverse and collaborative community of researchers from academia and industry with interest in exploring theoretical and methodological issues in the field.

Molecular and cellular mechanisms contributing to the pathogenesis of autoimmune diabetes

- Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder determined both by genetic and environmental factors. The Non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse is one of the best animal models of this disease. It spontaneously develops diabetes through a process resembling the human pathogenesis. The strong association of NOD Type 1 diabetes to the MHC region and the existence of other diabetes susceptibility loci are also in parallel with the human disease. The identity of the genetic factors and biological function mediated by these loci remain, however, largely unknown. Like in other autoimmune diseases, defects in tolerance mechanisms are thought to be at the origin of type 1 diabetes. Accordingly, defects in both central and peripheral tolerance mechanisms have been reported in the NOD mouse model. Using a subphenotype approach that aimed to dissect the disease into more simple phenotypes, we have addressed this issue. In paper I, we analyzed resistance to dexamethasone-induced apoptosis in NOD immature thymocytes previously mapped to the Idd6 locus. Using a set of congenic mice carrying B6-derived Idd6 regions on a NOD background and vice-versa we could restrict the Idd6 locus to an 8cM region on the telomeric end of chromosome 6 and the control of apoptosis resistance to a 3cM region within this area. In paper II, further analysis of diabetes incidence in these congenic mice separated the genes controlling these two traits, excluding the region controlling the resistance to apoptosis as directly mediating susceptibility to diabetes. These results also allowed us to further restrict the Idd6 locus to a 3Mb region. Expression analysis of genes in this chromosomal region highlighted the Lrmp/Jaw1 gene as a prime candidate for Idd6. Lrmp encodes an endoplasmatic reticulum resident protein. Papers III and IV relate to peripheral tolerance mechanisms. Several T cell populations with regulatory functions have been implicated in type 1 diabetes. In paper III, we analyzed NOD transgenic mice carrying a diverse CD1d-restricted TCR αVa3.2b9), named 24abNOD mice. The number of nonclassical NKT cells was found to be increased in these mice and almost complete protection from diabetes was observed. These results indicate a role for nonclassical NKT cells in the regulation of autoimmune diabetes. In paper IV, we studied the effects of introducing the diverse CD1d-restricted TCR (Va3.2b9) in immunodeficient NOD Rag-/- mice (24abNODRag-/- mice). This resulted in a surprising phenotype with inflammation of the ears and augmented presence of mast cells as well as spleenomegaly and hepatomegaly associated with extended fibrosis and increased numbers of mast cells and eosinophils in the tissues. These observations supported the notion that NKT cells constitute an “intermediary” cell type, not only able to elicit the innate immune system to mount an inflammatory response, but also able to interact with the adaptive immune system affecting the action of effector T cells in an autoimmune situation. In this context the 24abNODRag-/- mice provide an appropriate animal model for studying the interaction of NKT cells with both innate and adaptive components of the immune systemα.

- The book “Energy and Transport in Green Transitions – Perspectives on Ecomodernity” deals with the societally and scientifically crucial topic of energy and climate change mitigation. The book starts by setting high ambitions as the authors attempt “to go beyond both the extremism of the anti-capitalist critique and the radical enthusiasm of techno-economic positivism” in their exploration to find ways to resolve political, economic and technological entanglements “to boost a greener economy and culture”. It aims to so through a regional comparative study that looks at mature Western economies, the rapidly developing China, and the developing economies in sub-Saharan Africa. The authors present an excellent descriptive historical review for those interested in the broader picture of energy production and automobile sector in the regions addressed. However, in an attempt to cover as much ground as possible while assuring "maximum accessibility”, the authors' explanation of the dynamics of change involved is not conveyed in an analytically convincing manner.
