  • Identification and bioassay of sex pheromone components of carob moth, Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Zeller)
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Ecology. - 0098-0331. ; 17:10, s. 1973-1988
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three sex pheromone components of the carob moth were isolated and identified from the extract of female pheromone glands, using a variety of techniques including coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic recordings, coupled gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, microozonolysis, electroantennographic assays of monounsaturated standards, wind-tunnel bioassays, and field trials. The major component was identified as (Z,E)-9,11,13-tetradecatrienal, a novel lepidopterous pheromone component structure. Two minor components, either one of which improves the upwind flight response of males when blended with the major component, were identified as (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienal, and (Z)-9-tetra-decenal.

  • Nurses' creativity, tedium and burnout during 1 year of clinical supervision and implementation of individually planned nursing care : comparisons between a ward for severely demented patients and a similar control ward
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing. - 0309-2402 .- 1365-2648. ; 20:4, s. 742-749
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to study creativity and innovative climate, tedium and burnout among the nurses on two wards during 1 year of systematic clinic supervision combined with the implementation of individualized care on an experimental ward (EW) for severely demented patients, as compared with a similar control ward (CW) EW nurses had systematic clinic supervision and each patient had his/her nursing care carefully planned, documented and evaluated The intervention was evaluated by means of the Creative Climate Questionnaire, Burnout Measure and the Maslach Burnout Inventory Creativity and innovative climate improved significantly among the EW nurses (n= 19) in eight out of 10 factors during the year of intervention while there was no change on the control ward (n= 20) Tedium and burnout decreased significantly among the EW nurses while no change was seen in this respect among the CW nurses It seems reasonable to assume that systematic clinical supervision and individualized planned care decreases the negative outcome of stress caused by the psychological burden imposed by nursing care It also increases nurses' creativity, which, in turn, may benefit patient care The findings of this study point to the necessity for a support system that focuses on the work itself, i e the nursing care Individualized planned care and systematic clinical supervision may offer this kind of support.

  • An in vivo study of the effect of 5-HT and sympathetic nerves on transferrin and transthyretin mRNA expression in rat choroid plexus and meninges
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Brain Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1872-6240 .- 0006-8993. ; 662:1-2, s. 148-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Brain expression of transferrin (Tf) and transthyretin (TTR) mRNA has been demonstrated in different species, TTR being found only in the choroid plexus. We report here that both these mRNAs are also expressed in the meninges. In vitro studies have shown that Tf secretion by the rat choroid plexus is stimulated by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) while sympathetic nerves regulate different transport functions in the same tissue. We have used various in vivo models to study the neuroendocrine regulation of Tf and TTR mRNA expression in the choroid plexus and meninges. Destruction of the serotonergic nerves in the brain by either raphe nuclei lesion or intraventricular injections of 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT), which both decreased brain 5-HT levels significantly, did not affect Tf or TTR mRNA levels in choroid plexus and meninges, but increased TTR mRNA in liver. Intraventricular injection of 10 or 100 pmol 5-HT did not change the expression of these proteins in any of the tissues studied. Removal of the sympathetic innervation to the choroid plexus by cervical sympathectomy did not affect Tf or TTR mRNA levels in choroid plexus and liver, nor the incorporation of radioactive leucine into protein in various parts of the brain. In conclusion, our results do not support a regulatory role in vivo for neuronally derived 5-HT or sympathetic nerve activity on Tf and TTR mRNA expression in rat choroid plexus and meninges.

  • The Po Valley Fog Experiment 1989
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Tellus. Series B: Chemical and Physical Meteorology. - : Stockholm University Press. - 0280-6509. ; 44:5, s. 448-468
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An outline is presented here of the Po Valley Fog Experiment 1989, carried out within the EUROTRAC‐GCE project. This experiment is a joint effort by several European research groups from 5 countries. The physical and chemical behaviour of the fog multiphase system was studied experimentally following the temporal evolution of the relevant chemical species in the different phases (gas, droplet, interstitial aerosol) and the evolution of micrometeorological and microphysical conditions, from the pre‐fog situation through the whole fog evolution, to the post‐fog period. Some general results, useful for describing the general features of the fog system, are presented here, while specific scientific questions on the different processes taking place within the system itself will be addressed in other companion papers of this same issue.

  • Satisfaction with nursing care and work during a year of clinical supervision and individualized care : Comparison between two wards for the care of severely demented patients
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Management. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0966-0429 .- 1365-2834. ; 1:6, s. 297-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An intervention study was set up to explore the effects of the implementation of planned individualized care and regular systematic clinical supervision regarding nurses' degree of satisfaction with nursing care and work. All nurses on two similar wards caring for severely demented patients participated as experimental ward (EW) (n= 19) and control ward (CW) (n=20). Data were collected before intervention and at 6 months and 12 months during intervention, by means of a questionnaire developed in Sweden which assesses aspects of satisfaction with nursing care and work. Analysis was performed by means of principal component analysis, Wilcoxon rank sum test and Friedman two-way ANOVA. The baseline data showed no significant differences in the responses from the nurses on the two wards; they were found to be more satisfied than dissatisfied with their job although recognition from management was poor. During the intervention, the experimental ward nurses' experience of praise, professional growth, autonomy and quality of care, as well as their feeling of co-operation with colleagues and comfort improved significantly, while no changes occurred on the control ward. The quality of the written documentation on patients' needs and care improved significantly, and the experimental ward nurses also rejected significantly more strongly that their knowledge about patients and work was unsatisfactory. Their improved satisfaction with nursing care and work was believed to be related to the support they received in cognitive and emotional coping, the possibility of reflective learning and the change in management style associated with intervention.

  • Correlation between dendrite diameter and action potential amplitude in sex pheromone specific receptor neurons in male Ostrinia nubilalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Tissue and Cell. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-8166. ; 26:4, s. 503-512
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Outer dendritic segments of olfactory receptor neurons tuned to sex pheromone components were measured morphometrically on the antenna of male European corn borers. Ostrinia nubilalis, to determine if a correlation exists between the diameter of the outer dendritic segment and the spike amplitude. The olfactory sensilla investigated each contained three receptor cells. Two cells were each specific for one of the two pheromone components, (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z11-14:OAc) and (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14:OAc). Two strains of cornborers (Z and E) differ as to which of the two pheromone components is the main one. In both strains a large difference could be observed between the spike amplitudes elicited in the receptor cells by the two pheromone components, the main component always eliciting the large spike. In F1-hybrids (EZ) of these two strains, producing both pheromone components in similar quantities, the spike amplitudes were equal in the two pheromone-specific receptor cells. The third cell responded specifically to a behavioural antagonist. (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:OAc) in both the parental and hybrid strains, and always showed the smallest spike amplitude. In a morphometric study, the outer dendritic segments were shown to differ more in diameter between the largest and second largest cell in the two parental strains than in the hybrid strain, while the smallest diameter cell did not differ between the different strains. These results imply that receptor cells with larger diameter produce spikes with greater amplitude. The data also show that all three types of receptor neurons display outer dendritic segments with strong variation in the diameter along the length of the segment, and with a pronounced taper towards the tip.

  • Ergonomic Evaluation of Two Different Locations of the Scales in a Supermarket Checkout System
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Advances in Industrial Ergonomics and Safety V. ; , s. 667-674
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this pilot study was to ergonomically evaluate the effect of the location of the scales in a supermarket checkout system. A location of the scales to the left of the cashier was compared with a location under the conveyor belt. Two cashiers were videotaped while working with the two scale locations, in both sitting and standing working postures. Analysis of the video tapes was performed using the WOPALAS method, the VIRA method, and by noting certain positions of the left arm. The left wrist movements were registered by a two-dimensional goniometer. The results indicate that the location under the conveyor belt is somewhat more ergonomically favourable. The improvement is more pronounced for the cashier with a greater reach.

  • Perspectives on Aerosol Deposition to Natural Surfaces: interactions between aerosol residence times, removal processes, the biosphere and global environmental change
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aerosol Science. - 0021-8502 .- 1879-1964. ; 21:3, s. 313-338
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art and the research needs in the areas of aerosol residence-time assessments, deposition modelling, and understanding of aerosols in biogeochemistry. Research needs are emphasized from a systems perspective of global environmental change. Although fundamental quantitative knowledge is lacking, some qualitative linkages between source strengths, residence times, removal processes and the biosphere can be identified. It turns out that not only are the respective areas as such challenged by new problems, superimposed on the fairly well established conventional ones, but these areas also face mutually operating sets of feedbacks between residence times and sink/source characteristics of ecological systems subject to stress. To evaluate the sensitivity of these feedback loops, and to assess whether they are negative (stabilizing interactions) or positive (destabilizing) are important and potentially urgent tasks. Such studies should focus on a common goal, such as developing empirical and theoretical understanding of aerosol resuspension, transport and deposition for application in large-scale circulation models. A basic link in such advancements is that structural change of vegetated surfaces of the biosphere caused by deposition itself, and by changing land-use and climate, be understood and assessed. This article was initiated in connection with the Workshop on Aerosol Deposition to Natural Surfaces, Lund, Sweden, 2 September, 1988; conducted during the European Aerosol Conference (see J. Aerosol Sci. 19, 775–776). The authors wish to express their thanks to the workshop participants (list available from the workshop coordinators).
