  • Anti-phosphatidylserine/prothrombin antibodies and thrombosis associate positively with HLA-DRB1*13 and negatively with HLA-DRB1*03 in SLE
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Rheumatology. - : Oxford University Press. - 1462-0324 .- 1462-0332. ; 62:2, s. 924-933
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Emerging evidence demonstrates that aPS-PT associate with thrombotic events. Genetic predisposition, including HLA-DRB1 alleles, is known to contribute to the occurrence of conventional aPL [anti-beta(2)glycoprotein-I (anti-beta(2)GPI) and aCL]. We investigated associations between aPS-PT and HLA-DRB1* alleles and thrombosis in SLE. Conventional aPL were included for comparison. Methods: We included 341 consecutive SLE patients, with information on general cardiovascular risk factors, including blood lipids, LA and thrombotic events. aPS/PT, anti-beta(2)GPI and aCL of IgA/G/M isotypes and LA were quantified. Results: aPS/PT antibodies associated positively with HLA-DRB1*13 [odds ratio (OR) 2.7, P = 0.002], whereas anti-beta(2)GPI and aCL antibodies associated primarily with HLA-DRB1*04 (OR 2.5, P = 0.0005). These associations remained after adjustment for age, gender and other HLA-DRB1* alleles. HLA-DRB1*13, but not DRB1*04, remained as an independent risk factor for thrombosis and APS after adjustment for aPL and cardiovascular risk factors. The association between DRB1*13 and thrombosis was mediated by aPS-PT positivity. HLA-DRB1*03, on the other hand, associated negatively with thrombotic events as well as all aPL using both uni- and multivariate analyses. HLA-DRB1*03 had a thrombo-protective effect in aPL-positive patients. Additionally, HLA-DRB1*03 was associated with a favourable lipid profile regarding high-density lipoprotein and triglycerides. Conclusions: HLA-DRB1*13 confers risk for both aPS-PT and thrombotic events in lupus. The association between HLA-DRB1*13 and thrombosis is largely, but not totally, mediated through aPS-PT. HLA-DRB1*03 was negatively associated with aPL and positively with favourable lipid levels. Thus, HLA-DRB1*03 seems to identify a subgroup of SLE patients with reduced vascular risk.

  • Transient adsorption of zwitterionic fluoroquinolones on goethite during freeze-thaw cycles
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ACS - ES & T Water. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2690-0637.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fluoroquinolones, a class of antibiotics, have been detected in various aquatic environments, including those experiencing freeze-thaw cycles. This study investigated the adsorption of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in frozen (−21 °C) and aqueous (25 °C) solutions under varying pH levels, electrolyte types, and ionic strengths. CIP sorption on goethite was found to be transient, as freezing re-establishes equilibrium, nearly doubling CIP loadings at acidic to circumneutral pH values. The original equilibrium was restored by thawing. Our investigation reveals that ion pairs, formed between the positively charged piperazine group of CIP and anions (Cl-, Br-, and NO3-), create a charge-shielding effect, explaining the transient nature of CIP sorption equilibrium at goethite-water interfaces. In situ ATR-FTIR observations and model predictions further confirm the significant role of ion-paired surface complexes in transient CIP sorption. The transience of CIP sorption equilibrium in frozen and aqueous solutions is attributed to the local concentrations of anions, which undergo freeze-concentration into liquid intergrain boundaries and dilution by reversible ice nucleation and thawing. As the interaction between the hydrosphere and cryosphere intensifies with climate change, these findings have significant implications for evaluating the fate of contaminants in both terrestrial and aquatic environments.

  • A web-based framework to design and deploy mobile learning activities : Evaluating its usability, learnability and acceptance
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 2015 IEEE 15th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT). - : IEEE Press. - 9781467373340 ; , s. 88-92
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the efforts carried out related to the design and development of a web-based framework that allows designing, deploying and executing mobile data collecting applications. Furthermore, it also allows analyzing and presenting the data that is generated during the mentioned process. The fact that the framework is completely web-based provides a platform independent execution of the mobile application on any mobile device with a web-browser. As a result that the whole life-cycle of creating, executing and discussing a mobile learning activity is implemented in pure web-based manner separates this work from similar efforts. In the course of this work, the current state of development of two of the components, the authoring tool and the mobile application is presented. This framework was introduced to teachers in an activity to follow up an initial study. On the basis of a workshop with teachers, we performed an explorative study regarding the technology acceptance and usability of two components of the proposed framework. The results are discussed and analyzed in this paper.

  • The Roles of Stories in Applying Game Theory
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of economic methodology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1350-178X .- 1018-5070 .- 1469-9427. ; 15:2, s. 131-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Game-theoretic models consist of a formal game structure and an informal model narrative or story. When game theory is employed to model economic situations, the stories play a central role in interpreting, constructing and solving game structures. We analyse the architecture of game theory and distinguish between game models and the theory proper. We present the different functions of the model narrative in the application of game models to economic situations. In particular, we show how model narratives support the choice of solution concepts defined and provided by the theory proper. We further argue that the narrative's role in interpretation, construction and solution makes it a necessary part of a game model that is intended to be a model of an economic situation. We conclude that game theory is not a universal theory of rationality, but only offers tools to model specific situations at varying degrees and kinds of rationality.
