  • The double electrostatic ion ring experiment : A unique cryogenic electrostatic storage ring for merged ion-beams studies
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 82:6, s. 065112-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe the design of a novel type of storage device currently under construction at Stockholm University, Sweden, using purely electrostatic focussing and deflection elements, in which ion beams of opposite charges are confined under extreme high vacuum cryogenic conditions in separate rings and merged over a common straight section. The construction of this double electrostatic ion ring experiment uniquely allows for studies of interactions between cations and anions at low and well-defined internal temperatures and centre-of-mass collision energies down to about 10 K and 10 meV, respectively. Position sensitive multi-hit detector systems have been extensively tested and proven to work in cryogenic environments and these will be used to measure correlations between reaction products in, for example, electron-transfer processes. The technical advantages of using purely electrostatic ion storage devices over magnetic ones are many, but the most relevant are: electrostatic elements which are more compact and easier to construct; remanent fields, hysteresis, and eddy-currents, which are of concern in magnetic devices, are no longer relevant; and electrical fields required to control the orbit of the ions are not only much easier to create and control than the corresponding magnetic fields, they also set no upper mass limit on the ions that can be stored. These technical differences are a boon to new areas of fundamental experimental research, not only in atomic and molecular physics but also in the boundaries of these fields with chemistry and biology. For examples, studies of interactions with internally cold molecular ions will be particular useful for applications in astrophysics, while studies of solvated ionic clusters will be of relevance to aeronomy and biology.

  • EISCAT_3D - a next-generation European radar system for upper atmosphere and geospace research
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Radio Science Bulletin. - 1024-4530. ; :333, s. 75-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The EISCAT Scientifi c Association, together with a number of collaborating institutions, has recently completed a feasibility and design study for an enhanced performance research radar facility to replace the existing EISCAT UHF and VHF systems. This study was supported by EU Sixth-Framework funding. The new radar retains the powerful multi-static geometry of the EISCAT UHF, but will employ phased arrays, direct-sampling receivers, and digital beamforming and beam steering. Design goals include, inter alia, a tenfold improvement in temporal and spatial resolution, an extension of the instantaneous measurement of full-vector ionospheric drift velocities from a single point to the entire altitude range of the radar, and an imaging capability to resolve small-scale structures. Prototype receivers and beamformers are currently being tested on a 48-element, 224 MHz array (the "Demonstrator") erected at the Kiruna EISCAT site, using the EISCAT VHF transmitter as an illuminator.

  • PHAISTOS: A framework for Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation and inference of protein structure.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Computational Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 1096-987X .- 0192-8651. ; 34:19, s. 1697-1705
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a new software framework for Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling for simulation, prediction, and inference of protein structure. The software package contains implementations of recent advances in Monte Carlo methodology, such as efficient local updates and sampling from probabilistic models of local protein structure. These models form a probabilistic alternative to the widely used fragment and rotamer libraries. Combined with an easily extendible software architecture, this makes PHAISTOS well suited for Bayesian inference of protein structure from sequence and/or experimental data. Currently, two force-fields are available within the framework: PROFASI and OPLS-AA/L, the latter including the generalized Born surface area solvent model. A flexible command-line and configuration-file interface allows users quickly to set up simulations with the desired configuration. PHAISTOS is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0. Source code and documentation are freely available from http://phaistos.sourceforge.net. The software is implemented in C++ and has been tested on Linux and OSX platforms. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

  • Protein adsorption to surface chemistry and crystal structure modification of titanium surfaces
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Research. - : Stilus Optimus. - 2029-283X. ; 1:3, s. e3-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To observe the early adsorption of extracellular matrix and blood plasma proteins to magnesium-incorporated titanium oxide surfaces, which has shown superior bone response in animal models.Material and Methods: Commercially pure titanium discs were blasted with titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles (control), and for the test group, TiO2 blasted discs were further processed with a micro-arc oxidation method (test). Surface morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, surface topography by optic interferometry, characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The adsorption of 3 different proteins (fibronectin, albumin, and collagen type I) was investigated by an immunoblotting technique. Results: The test surface showed a porous structure, whereas the control surface showed a typical TiO2 blasted structure. XPS data revealed magnesium-incorporation to the anodic oxide film of the surface. There was no difference in surface roughness between the control and test surfaces. For the protein adsorption test, the amount of albumin was significantly higher on the control surface whereas the amount of fibronectin was significantly higher on the test surface. Although there was no significant difference, the test surface had a tendency to adsorb more collagen type I.Conclusions: The magnesium-incorporated anodized surface showed significantly higher fibronectin adsorption and lower albumin adsorption than the blasted surface. These results may be one of the reasons for the excellent bone response previously observed in animal studies.

  • Anisotropic hot electron emission from fullerenes
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 136:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoelectron spectra for fullerenes C-60 and C-70 ionized using 800 nm laser pulses with pulse durations from 120 to 1000 fs show thermal electron kinetic energy distributions but they also exhibit angular anisotropy with respect to the laser light polarization. The effective temperature of electrons, measured along the laser polarization direction, is significantly higher than in the perpendicular direction. We explain this observation by considering that the emission of the thermal electrons is uncorrelated with the phase of the laser pulse, unlike directly ionized electrons, and, depending on the time of emission, they may experience an additional "kick" from the vector potential of the laser field when they are emitted from the molecule. • Momentum map imaging photoelectron spectroscopy of fullerenes with femtosecond laser pulses
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A. - 1050-2947. ; 81:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoelectron spectra of C60 and C70, ionized with ultrashort laser pulses, are measured with a momentum-map-imaging electron spectrometer. Above the photon energy, 1.6 eV, the spectra are essentially structureless and well described by Boltzmann distributions, with temperatures on the order of 104 K. This result is similar to previous results for C60 using a time-of-flight electron spectrometer, which are confirmed in this study. Comparisons of electron energy distributions recorded for identical laser intensities but for different pulse durations demonstrate unambiguously that a significant fraction of the electrons are emitted in quasithermal processes and results argue strongly against a field ionization or direct multiphoton ionization mechanism. For electron energies above the photon energy, which account for about half the intensity, the whole signal is consistent with this quasithermal emission.

  • Vertex-based morphometry in euthymic bipolar disorder implicates striatal regions involved in psychomotor function
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Psychiatry Research-Neuroimaging. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-4927 .- 1872-7123. ; 221:3, s. 173-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We hypothesized that psychomotor disturbances in patients with bipolar disorder are associated with morphometric changes in functionally specific regions of the basal ganglia and thalamus. We used structural magnetic resonance imaging and vertex-based morphometry to investigate whether psychomotor performance is associated with changes in volume and shape in euthymic subjects with bipolar disorder (n=27) compared with matched healthy controls (n=27). We saw no significant differences between age- and sex-matched groups in motor performance. We found a statistically significant group difference in the shape of the right putamen in the absence of psychomotor disturbances. There was an association between shape and motor performance in controls that was lacking in patients. We conclude that euthymic subjects with bipolar disorder without psychomotor disturbances show shape changes in regions of the right putamen that contribute to executive functions and motor function. It may be that other brain regions sustain the psychomotor functions that produce nearly identical motor performance in both groups. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved

  • Crosslinks in wheat gluten films with hexagonal close-packed protein structures
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Industrial crops and products (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0926-6690 .- 1872-633X. ; 51, s. 229-235
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wheat gluten/glycerol (WGG) films were extruded with aqueous ammonia/salicylic acid or urea to investigate the reactions contributing to their hexagonal close-packed protein structures and material properties. The addition of aqueous ammonia and salicylic acid increased the pH, which, in turn, increased the level of intermolecular disulfide and lanthionine cross-links in the WGG films. Increased protein cross-linking reactions resulted in higher material strength and tensile modulus. These cross-linking reactions and the resulting material properties were similar for WGG films with 7.5% and 10% aqueous ammonia. Added urea into WGG film partially degraded into cyanate and ammonium. Cyanate subsequently reacted with lysine and cysteine to ε-carbamyllysine and S-carbamylcysteine, respectively. Even though these reactions resulted in a more alkaline reaction environment, hereby favoring disulfide bond formation and decreasing protein extractability, they also prevented the involvement of cysteine and lysine in protein cross-linking. The alkylation of these reactive amino acids, together with the plasticizing effect of urea, led to lower material strength and elastic modulus with increasing levels of urea.

  • Frontotemporal hypoactivity during a reality monitoring paradigm is associated with delusions in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Cognitive Neuropsychiatry. - 1354-6805 .- 1464-0619. ; 19:2, s. 97-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction Impaired monitoring of internally generated information has been proposed to be one component in the development and maintenance of delusions. The present study investigated the neural correlates underlying the monitoring processes and whether they were associated with delusions. Methods Twenty healthy controls and 19 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders were administrated a reality monitoring paradigm during functional magnetic resonance imaging. During encoding participants were instructed to associate a statement with either a presented (viewed condition) or an imagined picture (imagined condition). During the monitoring session in the scanner, participants were presented with old and new statements and their task was to identify whether a given statement was associated with the viewed condition, imagined condition, or if it was new. Results Patients showed significantly reduced accuracy in the imagined condition with performance negatively associated with degree of delusions. This was accompanied with reduced activity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and left hippocampus in the patient group. The severity of delusions was negatively correlated with the blood-oxygenation-level dependent response in the left hippocampus. Conclusions The results suggest that weakened monitoring is associated with delusions in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder, and that this may be mediated by a frontotemporal dysfunction.
