  • Integration barriers for purchasing organisation in a large construction company: towards requisite disintegration
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: The IMP Journal. - 0809-7259. ; 7:1, s. 46-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Developing the purchasing organisation is an ongoing challenge for large contractors where internal and external perspectives need to interplay. The aim of this paper is two-fold: firstly, the development of a theoretical framework to characterise the purchasing organisation and secondly, to analyse the limited adoption of integrated purchasing through an analysis of barriers to integration. The theoretical standpoint is underpinned by purchasing organisation theory and by literature on internal and external integration as well as barriers to integration. Based on a two-year case study, the paper presents the status of the purchasing organisation and the barriers to further integration as originating from the strategic purchasers of the contractor. The perceived barriers question full integration internally and externally. The perceived barriers encompass low framework agreement status compared to orders, inconsistent ways of working in the projects and dispersed geographical location and sub-markets. The barriers to integration stem from both attitudinal and industrial matters, whilst institutional barriers are not identified. The paper therefore proposes a differentiated, requisitely disintegrated, purchasing organisation designed to manage the diverse supplier population. In contrast to those advocating a tighter internal and external integration, this paper suggests a requisite balance between integration and specialisation of the purchasing activities.

  • Långsiktig framgång - reducera fel och slöseri i byggandet
  • 2013

  • Why do work sampling studies in construction? The case of plumbing work in Scandiavia
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Engineering, Construction and Architectural Management. - 1365-232X .- 0969-9988. ; 20:6, s. 589-603
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to identify reasons for doing work sampling studies in processes performed by temporary organisations. Specific questions consider if the technique can be used for measuring productivity and if it can be used to compare performances over time.Design/methodology/approach– A work sampling study of plumbing work in eight construction projects is compared with a similar study performed 20 years earlier. Interviews are made in order to find out how the work conditions have developed over time.Findings– Work sampling studies are of little value for measuring productivity as well as for comparing performances over time. One reason is that the conditions vary to a high extent from one situation to another. Another reason is that working conditions undergo significant development over time. On the other hand, the authors experience that data from work sampling studies are of high relevance for discussions on improvement opportunities among workers as well as among corporate managers.

  • In-housing or out-sourcing on-site materials handling in housing?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Engineering, Design and Technology. - : Emerald. - 1726-0531. ; 11:1, s. 90-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discover whether on-site materials handling should be performed in-house or out-sourced. This is done by studying visible and hidden costs related to materials handling and of the managers' awareness of these costs.Design/methodology/approach – The data have been gathered through 15 interviews, a number of short discussions on construction sites, and direct observations on six occasions in four housing projects in Scandinavia.Findings – Indirect and waste costs for materials handling on construction sites are unknown and are often underestimated during budgeting, planning, scheduling and organizing construction projects.Practical implications – The short case-studies indicate that the benefits of out-sourcing on-site materials handling outweigh the costs.Originality/value – The solution for materials handling in practice studied in the paper is undergoing rapid development in Scandinavia.

  • Practices in bidding process of contractors: a comparative study between China and Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of CITC-VII, Bangkok, 19-21 Dec.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adopting formal and analytical models to assess and price project risk at the tender stage to practice is challenging due to the lack of improved understanding of the actual process on how contractors decide to bid or not. The aim of this paper is to investigate how the bidding process is organized and managed in large and medium-sized construction companies, with a focus on how risks are considered when deciding whether to bid or not as well as on deciding price level. The paper is further a benchmark between how the process is organized in Chinese and Swedish construction companies, since it is believed that there are significant differences based on, among others things, cultural issues. Interviews are made with managers within eight Chinese companies and four Swedish companies. Among issues covered in the interviews are who is involved, structure of meetings, how decisions are made and project preferences. The study is expected to increase the understanding of the context of decision-making in the bidding process. The further research may focus on factors influencing decision-making.
