  • Pump-probe collision in optical fibers : Four-wave-mixing induced frequency jump
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Optical Society of America. B, Optical physics. - : Optical Society of America (OSA). - 0740-3224 .- 1520-8540. ; 18:11, s. 1652-1658
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An investigation is made of ultrafast pump-probe pulse collisions near the zero-dispersion wavelength in an optical single-mode fiber. A steplike probe frequency shift is observed when the pump power is gradually increased. The magnitude of this frequency jump is shown to depend on the phase difference between the pulses. This new effect is investigated numerically and experimentally and is attributed to four-wave mixing.

  • Higher order polarization mode dispersion compensator with three degrees of freedom
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Optical Fiber Communication Conference and International Conference on Quantum Information. - 1557526540
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compare several PMD compensation methods, and find that the simple PMD compensator with a variable polarization controller (PC) and a variable time delay line can compensate for not only first, but also higher order PMD.

  • Probability density functions of the differential group delay in optical fiber communication systems
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 19:3, s. 324-331
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fiber communication systems limited by polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) are usually analyzed using statistics. The probability density function (pdf) of the differential group delay (DGD) is then crucial to know. There are cases for which the commonly used Maxwellian pdf is only approximate, e.g., PMD emulators, or systems with components having single components with large deterministic PMD. Those cases are discussed in this paper, and their pdfs are derived. To do this, we present a very general theory that allows for the derivation of the pdf for almost any birefringent transmission line. As a side result, we are able to prove that the square-sum concatenation formula is valid in almost every case of interest, even if the pdf is far from Maxwellian.

  • A comparison between NRZ and RZ data formats with respect to PMD-induced system degradation
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Optical Fiber Communication Conference. - 1557526540
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We quantify the PMD-induced system outage probability by means of numerical simulations for NRZ and RZ with proper comparative conditions and find that RZ performs better than NRZ. We also study the trade-off between power margin and acceptable PMD.

  • Comparison of soliton robustness with respect to polarization-mode dispersion with first-order polarization-mode dispersion compensated linear systems
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Optics Letters. - 0146-9592 .- 1539-4794. ; 26:10, s. 672-674
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soliton robustness to polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) is compared, both analytically and numerically, with that of linear pulses that use first-order PMD compensation. It is found that soliton robustness to PMD is comparable with first-order PMD compensation and in some cases is even better. The effects of soliton control methods on soliton robustness to PMD were also investigated, and it was found that soliton control methods can significantly improve the soliton's robustness to PMD, particularly for long-distance systems.

  • Polarisation-mode dispersion induced outages in dispersion-managed soliton systems
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Electronics Letters. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). - 1350-911X .- 0013-5194. ; 37:24, s. 1472-1473
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polarisation-mode dispersion (PMD) induced system outages in dispersion-managed (DM) soliton systems are investigated. It is shown that DM solitons can achieve much better performance than conventional solitons and linear systems with respect to PMD because of less pulse broadening and reduced interaction between the soliton and dispersive waves in DM soliton systems.

  • Polarization-mode dispersion-induced outages in soliton transmission systems
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1041-1135 .- 1941-0174. ; 13:10, s. 1079-1081
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The bit-error-rate (BER) degradation of conventional soliton systems due to polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) is investigated. It is found that the interplay between the dispersive waves generated by PMD and adjacent soliton pulses will seriously degrade the BER of soliton systems, and make them even worse than linear systems if all other transmission impairments are neglected. In order to achieve soliton robustness to PMD, some techniques to eliminate or reduce the dispersive waves must be employed, such as soliton control methods or dispersion-managed solitons. Different systems are estimated and compared in terms of PMD-induced outage probability.

  • Robustness of dispersion-managed solitons to the polarization-mode dispersion in optical fibers
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1041-1135 .- 1941-0174. ; 13:2, s. 121-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The robustness of dispersion-managed (DM) solitons to polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) is studied by numerical simulations. It is shown clearly that DM solitons are robust to PMD, and generally, DM solitons are more robust to PMD than conventional solitons. The robustness of DM solitons depends on both map strength and average group velocity dispersion (GVD). We show that the larger the map strength and average GVD, the more robust are the DM solitons to PMD, which is due to the increased power of DM solitons with the large map strength and average GVD.
