  • Routinization of stress control programs in organizations : A study of Swedish teachers
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Health Promotion International. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0957-4824 .- 1460-2245. ; 5:4, s. 269-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to design and evaluate a stress control programme which can be carried out by employees in work organizations without direct assistance from specialists. The target group was Swedish high school teachers. Using a two-step model, so called health teams at six high schools were trained by a specialist. A health team is usually comprised of three to five voluntarily recruited persons, generally a school nurse and a few teachers. After this training, the health teams arranged voluntary circles with their colleagues at their respective schools. A treatment group of teachers (n = 56) followed the programme. Programme participants learned relaxation, discussed various aspects of stress, and were equipped with target group adapted training materials. The circles met five to eight times at 2–3 week intervals, 1–3 h per session; all sessions were held during the subjects' spare time. Compared with a control group of teachers (n = 33), the programme participants reported significantly different mean responses in the following respects at a post-training assessment: (i) fewer perceived stressors in the work situation; (ii) more use of emotion-focused coping strategies such as distancing, positive reappraisal, seeking social-emotional support, and self-control, (iii) improved health behaviour (drinking, exercise, nutrition, relaxation and smoking); (iv) fewer physical and emotional stress reactions; (v) a more cheerful overall mood state and a higher sense of well-being and work satisfaction; (vi) less work-related ill health; (vii) a lower intensity of reaction in response to daily hassles; and (viii) an increase in actions taken against stressors-individually and collectively-at work and in the private situation. It was suggested that routinization of stress control programmes in work organizations requires the following: the presence of goal-oriented and entrepreneurial intraorganizational change agents to lead the programmes, the presence of a specialist to train and supervise the local change agents, the availability of comprehensive and target group adapted (raining aids, and formal implementation of the programme in the organizational structure.

  • Contaminated sediment as a source of PCBs in a river system
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. - : Canadian Science Publishing. - 0706-652X .- 1205-7533. ; 47:4, s. 746-754
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The transport of PCBs (Aroclor 1242) in a river system in southern Sweden was governed by outflow from sediment in a 26-ha contaminated lake. Experiments in the lake revealed that 14 g PCBs/d escaped from the sediment, while sedimentation was 3 g PCB/d. Volatilization of PCBs from the lake surface was 0.02 g/d, which was considerably higher than the atmospheric fallout . The majority of the sediment-desorbed compounds (80%) remained at the river mouth, 60 km downstream, and entered the Baltic Sea. Desorption increased the ratio of tetrachlorobiphenyls to pentachlorobiphenyls in the water. Transport across the water/air interface was higher for trichlorobiphenyls, while atmospheric deposition was dominated by penta- and hexachlorobiphenyls. Therefore, the sediment of the lake acted as a source of PCBs entering the river system as well as the atmosphere.

  • Pelagic bacterial and phytoplankton in a subtropical marine environment exposed to chronic oil contamination.
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Oil and Chemical Pollution. - 0269-8579. ; 7:2, s. 129-142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The abundance and production of pelagic bacteria, phytoplankton primary production and chlorophyll content were studied in coastal waters receiving the effluent from an oil refinery in the Arabian Gulf. The area also receives unknown amounts of other effluents rich in organic matter and nutrients. The abundance of bacteria was measured by epifluorescent direct counts, and productivity was estimated by 3H-thymidine uptake measurements. The results showed a clear stimulation of the primary productivity as well as elevated amounts of chlorophyll a in the area receiving the effluent. Both bacterial abundances and production were an order of magnitude higher in a small area close to the refinery outlet, but dropped rapidly and reached background values outside an impacted area of c 10 km2. The increased bacterial production in this area corresponded to a substrate demand of 4 to 11 tonnes of carbon per day, 4 to 12 times the daily discharge of some 0·9 tonnes of carbon in the form of petroleum hydrocarbons from the oil refinery. These data, plus the low petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations found in the sediments and in bivalves outside the impacted area, suggest that bacterial degradation of the petroleum hydrocarbons from the refinery could be a major process restricting the area impacted by oil pollution.

  • Haemorheological result in a large multicentre study of claudicants treated with ketanserin
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Clinical Hemorheology. - New York, USA : Pergamon Press. - 0271-5198. ; 10, s. 321-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract  An international, multi-centre trial was carried out to test the haemorheological effects of ketanserin, a serotonin antagonist, after treatment of intermittent claudicants for 1 year. Haematological indices, whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity and red cell and white cell     filterabi1ity were measured using standardised techniques. Even so, inter-laboratory variability, and intra-laboratory changes in control values in some centres over the 1 year period proved to be major obstacles. The pooled data showed no evidence of haemorheological changes, although data from the single largest centre indicated slightly lowered haematocrit and blood and plasma viscosity. Any rheological effects of serotonin antagonists in intermittent claudicants are probably small and unlikely to be the main source of any clinical efficacy. In general, it would appear that standardisation and monitoring of laboratory techniques must be strictly carried out if there is to be any hope of successfully carrying out multi-centre haemorheological trials. .  Key words: Blood Rheology; Claudication; Serotonin Antagonists;

  • A review and critique of psychological approaches to the burn-out phenomenon
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 4:2, s. 83-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the 70s the concept burn-out appeared in psychological literature on the helping professions. The concept has since then been ascribed several meanings, and critical voices have been raised against the lack of clarity and consensus in the definitions. The aim of this article was to critically examine the thinking on the concept of burn-out. The helping professionals--nurses, welfare officers, psychologists, medical doctors, etc.--have expanded rapidly since the 60s. It is stated that the issues on which burn-out researchers focus deserve the attention of social scientists in general. The major limitation in the literature on burn-out is that there is little analysis of the role of society and social conditions in producing the phenomenon. It is suggested that sociological analyses may have a contribution to make here.
