- We report on experimental absolute oscillator strengths for 18 UV lines of Ru II, obtained by combining laser-induced fluorescence measurements of radiative lifetimes and branching fractions from line intensities in a calibrated Fourier-transform spectrum. HST/GHRS observations of the spectrum of the sharp-lined B star chi Lupi contain six of these lines, for which ''astrophysical'' relative f-values have been determined. The agreement is within 0.10 dex for a Ru abundance of log N(Ru)/N(H) = -7.90, which is 2.3 dex above the solar abundance.

- STUDY OBJECTIVE--To explore the link between serum cholesterol and suicide by investigating the relation between serum lipids and depressive symptoms. DESIGN--This was a cross sectional study of the relation between serum cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides on the one hand and depressive symptoms as expressed in a questionnaire on the other. SETTING--An organisational development programme in industry with assistance from occupational health care. PARTICIPANTS--A total of 644 male and 261 female employees (mainly white-collar workers) participated. MAIN RESULTS--Total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol values were lower in those men who, sometimes, often, or very often, had experienced low mood or glumness during the past month compared with those who had not. Serum triglyceride concentrations did not differ between the groups. In women, however, the serum triglyceride value, but not the total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol, was lower in those who reported low mood, depression, or anxiety during the past six months. CONCLUSIONS--Decreasing appetite as a consequence of depression in men would probably lead to both decreasing cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations. Thus, these data indicate the presence of some other explanation for the relation between the level of LDL cholesterol and depressive symptoms in men.

- Information technology is in a phase of rapid development, and communication needs in the food industry and elsewhere are growing. Many operators in food production plants have little or no experience of computer operation; computer systems designed for use in this environment must therefore be so user-friendly that computer novices can operate them. This article describes projects in the information technology field that aim ultimately to aid the design of computer-based tools for food production plant operators. © 1994.

- Oncogenesis of tumours related to multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is associated with somatic deletions involving the MEN1 locus, suggesting inactivation of a tumour suppressor gene in this region. Identification of meiotic cross-overs in MEN1 families has placed the MEN1 locus centromeric of D11S807. An extended deletion mapping was performed in 27 primary parathyroid tumours, and identified D11S427 as the closest centromeric flanking marker. Through physical mapping using newly isolated cDNA clones, we estimated the distance between the flanking markers D11S807 and D11S427 to be less than 900 kb. One of these cDNA clones showed expression of a 4.4 kb message in multiple tissues, including those affected in MEN1, while in five endocrine tumours no transcript was detected. Sequence characterization showed that this gene encodes for the phospholipase C beta 3, a key enzyme in signal transduction.
