  • Open source step counter algorithm for wearable devices
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Companion Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2020). - New York, United States : ACM Digital Library. - 9781450388207
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Commercial wearable devices and fitness trackers are commonly sold as black boxes of which little is known about their accuracy. This poses serious issues especially in health-related contexts such as clinical research, where transparency about accuracy and reliability are paramount. We present a validated algorithm for computing step counting that is optimised for use in constrained computing environments. Released as open source, the algorithm is based on the windowed peak detection approach, which has previously shown high accuracy on smartphones. The algorithm is optimised to run on a programmable smartwatch (Pine Time) and tested on 10 subjects in 8 scenarios, with varying varying positions of the wearable and walking paces. Our approach achieves a 89% average accuracy, with the highest average accuracy when walking outdoor (98%) and the lowest in a slow-walk scenario (77%). This result can be compared with the built-in step counter of the smartwatch (Bosch BMA421), which yielded a 94% average accuracy for the same use cases. Our work thus shows that an open-source approach for extracting physical activity data from wearable devices is possible and achieves an accuracy comparable to the one produced by proprietary embedded algorithms.

  • Iron Carbonyl Mediated Parallel Synthesis
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis describes the examination and development of cationic iron carbonyl complexes for use in parallel synthesis both in solution phase and on solid phase. A solution phase methodology for carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom formation, utilizing polymer bound reagents and scavengers and amenable for automation has been successfully developed. Ten different nucleophiles (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur) were used, giving the targeted cyclohexadienoic amides in good yields and excellent purities. The solution phase methodology was transferred to a solid phase protocol, generating a diverse set of eighteen cyclohexadienoic amides of excellent purities and in good yields using nine different nucleophiles (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and phosphorous). Both methods use the same reaction conditions for all nucleophiles demonstrating the versatility of these methods in generating compound libraries of high diversity. Even sterically hindered nucleophiles like tert-butanol gave good results. Activated esters were also investigated as potential linkers for iron carbonyl mediated chemistry on solid phase, and a tetrafluorophenol linkage was found to be the most suitable for this purpose. Synthesis of oseltamivir analogues and galectin inhibitors based on cationic iron carbonyl chemistry has been undertaken and work is currently in progress to finalize these projects. This thesis also describes the investigation of a phosphate based linker for cationic iron carbonyl chemistry on solid phase. In solution phase, palladium and nickel catalyzed cross-coupling reaction cleaved the investigated enyl and dienyl phosphates to give the targeted olefins. However, when transferring to a solid phase protocol only traces of the desired olefin were detected. In summary, this thesis shows that cationic iron carbonyl chemistry is amenable for parallel synthesis both in solution and on solid phase using the same reaction conditions for a wide range of nucleophiles. Keywords: solid phase, parallel synthesis, scavenger, polymer bound reagent, iron carbonyl complex, cation, dienyl, active ester, linker, oseltamivir, galectin inhibitor

  • Ecological Theory in the Context of Super-Diversity and Globalized Aging
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Urban Social Work. - 2474-8684 .- 2474-8692. ; 8:1, s. 31-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: This article examines the intersection of two global trends, super-diversity and globalized aging, in the context of urban communities. Super-diversity refers to the impact of changing immigration patterns on social, health, and economic systems. Interdisciplinary by definition, gerontological social work practice bridges macro, mezzo, and micro modalities, as well as professional and disciplinary false divides. Objective: The authors aim to highlight how urban gerontology practice can benefit from reaching across borders and boundaries. Goals include identifying best practices of care that can serve as models in a range of environments. Methods: The authors used a qualitative case study approach. Data collection consisted of individual interviews and focus groups.Findings: Findings suggest the ongoing relevance of ecological theory in the context of identifying best practices in social work gerontology.Discussion: Through the lens of super-diversity and globalized aging, the authors examine processes and impacts at the intersection of migration, advanced age, and care systems in the urban context. Findings indicate the need to further de-colonize aging care.

  • Mothers' health and work-related factors at 11 weeks postpartum
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Annals of Family Medicine. - : Annals of Family Medicine. - 1544-1709 .- 1544-1717. ; 5:6, s. 519-527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Many new mothers return to work soon after childbirth. This study examines personal and work-related factors associated with the postpartum health of employed women 11 weeks after childbirth. Methods: Using a prospective cohort design, we recruited 817 Minnesota mothers into the study while they were hospitalized for childbirth in 2001. Telephone interviews were conducted at 5 and 11 weeks postpartum. Eligible women were 18 years or older, employed, and spoke English and gave birth to a singleton infant. Multivariate models using instrumental variables (2-stage least squares) were used to estimate personal and employment characteristics associated with women's physical and mental health and postpartum symptoms. Results: At 11 weeks postpartum, 661 participants (81% of enrollees) completed a full interview, and 50% of participants had returned to work. On average, women reported 4.1 (SD 3.2) childbirth-related symptoms, most frequently fatigue (43%). Factors significantly associated with better health outcomes included better preconception health, the absence of prenatal mood problems, more control over work and home activities, more social support at work and home, and less job stress. Conclusions: The findings suggest postpartum women need to be evaluated regarding their fatigue levels and mental and physical symptoms. Women whose fatigue or postpartum symptoms limit daily role function may find it helpful to have health care clinicians counsel them on strategies to decrease job stress, increase social support at work and home, and certify their use of intermittent family and medical leave to help them manage their symptoms.
