  • Hemicellulolytic activity of Fusarium oxysporum grown on sugar beet pulp. Production of extracellular arabinanase
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Process Biochemistry. - 1359-5113 .- 1873-3298. ; 35:6, s. 557-561
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fusarium oxysporum F3 exhibited hemicellulolytic enzymic activity when grown on sugar beet pulp, a by-product of the sugar industry. The growth medium was specifically optimised for enhanced production of extracellular arabinanase. The optimum medium contained sugar beet pulp (4%, w/v) and corn steep liquor (6%, v/v) as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. Arabinanase activity as high as 0.25 U/ml of culture was obtained, which compared favourably to those reported for other microorganisms. Optimal arabinanase activity was observed at pH 6-7 and 50 °C. Investigation of the degradation of the main components of sugar beet pulp showed that arabinose containing polysaccharides and pectin were first degraded, followed by the glucose-containing polysaccharides.

  • Highly deformed rotational structures in 136Pm
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 62:3, s. 313041-313045
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four highly deformed structures in the odd-odd nucleus 13661Pm75 were observed via the 105Pd(35Cl,2p2n) reaction at 180 and 173 MeV using the GAMMASPHERE γ-ray spectrometer and the Microball charged-particle detector array. Quadrupole moment measurements were performed on all of the bands. In contrast to lighter odd-Ζ Pm and Pr nuclei, bands based on the g9/2[404]9/2 proton orbital were not observed. Instead, the four observed sequences are assigned as a coupling of an i13/2 neutron with the low-Ω h11/2 and mixed d5/2g7/2 orbitals. Comparisons with neighboring highly deformed structures are discussed and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations for 136Pm are presented.

  • Terminating bands in 98,99,100Ru nuclei : New information on the neutron 2d5/2 and 1g7/2 energy spacing
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 62:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states of 98,99,100Ru have been populated using the reaction 70Zn(36S, αxn) at 130 MeV. The γ rays have been detected with the EUROGAM-2 array. New high-spin bands have been established in these nuclei and interpreted as terminating configurations using the Nilsson-Strutinsky cranking formalism. These bands were observed up to the predicted terminating states which are built from g9/2 protons and N=3 proton holes combined with d5/2, 87/2, and h11/2 neutrons relative to a 90Zr core. Core-excited configurations with N=3 proton holes have been found to play an important role. The observed high-spin states assigned as terminating show systematic behavior and provide new information on the energy spacing between the 2d5/2 and 1 g7/2 neutron subshells.

  • Collective structures and band termination in 107Sb
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 62:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in the near proton-dripline nucleus 107Sb have been identified, and collectivity in this nucleus has been observed for the first time in the form of two rotational bands. One of the observed rotational structures is a ΔI = 1 band, and is interpreted as based on a π(g9/2)-1 ⊗ π(g7/2d5/2)2 proton configuration. A second structure has ΔI = 2 character, and is explained as being based on a πh11/2⊗[π(g9/2)-2 ⊗ π(g7/2d5/2)2] proton configuration through comparison with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model calculations. The calculations predict that this band terminates at a spin of 79/2 (Latin small letter h with stroke).

  • Purification and cloning of type A/B hnRNP protein involved in transcriptional activation from the rat spi 2 gene GAGA box
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Biological Chemistry. - 1431-6730. ; 381:11, s. 1031-1040
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The GAGA box of the rat serine protease inhibitor 2 (spi 2) genes not only acts as a basal promoter element, but also mediates transcriptional activation by growth hormone and interleukin-6. The GAGA box is separated from the TATA box by only 12 bp, and this close association is required for efficient transcription. Hence, the GAGA box may influence transcription efficiency through interactions between GAGA box binding proteins and some components of the RNA polymerase II complex. Here we report the cloning of two GAGA box-binding proteins termed p38 and p40, that belong to the type A/B heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein subgroup. GAGA box mutations that diminish the affinity for p38 and p40 decrease basal and GH-induced reporter gene expression. Furthermore, nuclear extracts depleted of p38 and p40 can no longer support GAGA box-dependent in vitro transcription. Therefore, two polypeptides previously assigned to a family of RNA processing proteins also act as DNA-binding, promoter-specific transcription factors.

  • Multivariate image regression (MIR): implementation of image PLSR - first forays
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemometrics. ; 14:5-6, s. 585-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the effort of analysing multivariate images, image PLS has been considered interesting. In this paper, image PLS (MIR) is compared with image PCA (MIA) by studying a comparison data set. While MIA has been commercially available for some time, image PLS has not. The kernel PLS algorithm of Lindgren has been implemented in a development environment which is a combination of G (LabVIEW) and MATLAB. In this presentation the power of this environment, as well as an early example in image regression, will be demonstrated. With kernel PLS, all PLS vectors (eigenvectors and eigenvalues) can be calculated from the joint variance-covariance (XY and YX) and association (YY and XX) matrices. The dimensions of the kernel matrices XYYX and YXXY are K × K (K is the number of X-variables) and M × M (M is the number of Y-variables) respectively. Hence their size is dependent only on the number of X and Y-variables and not on the number of observations (pixels), which is crucial in image analysis. The choice of LabVIEW as development platform has been based on our experience of a very short implementation time combined with user-friendly interface possibilities. Integrating LabVIEW with MATLAB has speeded up the decomposition calculations, which otherwise are slow. Also, algorithms for matrix calculations are easier to formulate in MATLAB than in LabVIEW. Applying this algorithm on a representative test image which shows many of the typical features found in technical imagery, we have shown that image PLS (MIR) decomposes the data differently than image PCA (MIA), in accordance with chemometric experience from ordinary two-way matrices. In the present example the Y-reference texture-related image used turned out to be able to force a rather significant tilting compared with an ordinary MIA of the primary structures in the original, spectral R/G image.

  • First evidence for smooth band termination in valence space in the mass 130 region : Spectroscopy of 127La
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 61:2, s. 213031-213035
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High spin states in 127La have been studied using the 32S(100Mo,p4n) reaction at a beam energy of 155 MeV. Gamma rays were detected using the EUROBALL III spectrometer. One of the side bands in 127La is observed to be populated to a spin of 83/2+. These data are compared with cranked Nilsson-Strutinski calculations which suggest that the structure is a smoothly terminating band, in valence space, based upon a π[(g7/2d5/2)5(h11/2)2]⊗ ν[(g7/2d5/2)12(h11/2)6(d3/2s1/2)2] configuration, which can carry a maximum spin of 47.5ℏ. This is the first identification of such a structure in this mass region.

  • On the merits of using multiple indices in evaluating small graphical symbols
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Ergonomics for the new Millenium. - : Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. - 0945289138 ; , s. 657-660
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The advantages of using multiple indices in evaluating small graphical symbols were discussed. Prospective users from eastern (Asian) and western countries were used as subjects. Several tests were performed utilizing videophone symbols based on studies done by the Human Factors Technical Committee (HFTC) of the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI). The results show that using multiple indices helped reveal subtle but potentially important differences in the results between different cultural groups.

  • Using multiple performance parameters in testing small graphical symbols
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main objective of the study was to analyse the understanding of small graphical symbols (pictograms and icons) among different potential user groups around the world using different test indices or parameters. Pilot studies using videophone symbols designed in Japan, USA and England were initially done. The main study utilised videophone symbols studied by the Human Factors Technical Committee (HFTC) of the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI). Test subjects were from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Finland, Sweden, and the USA. The four tests used yielded 10 parameters and used to compare symbol understanding of the different country groups. These were: (1-4) spontaneous identification and cued response hit rates and certainty ratings; 5) misses; 6) false alarms or confusions, 7) missing values; 8) individual symbol preference, 9) symbol set preference; and 10) semantic rating scales. Results from the free recall tests in all countries revealed very poor identification of most symbols in contrast to the cued response test results. In other cases when symbols were recognised for their intended meaning, they could still be easily confused as representing another (wrong) function. Overall, the results also showed the use of several parameters or indices are very helpful in understanding how different groups perceive symbols, as well as to help decide which ones to retain, re-design, or even replace.

  • Superdeformed and Highly Deformed Bands in 65Zn and Neutron-proton Interactions in Zn Isotopes
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 62:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Superdeformed and highly deformed rotational bands were established in Zn-65 using the Ca-40(Si-29,4p)Zn-65 reaction, and averaged quadrupole moments were measured for two of these bands. The configurations of these bands were assigned based on Hartree-Fock calculations. One of the three bands exhibits at low (h) over bar omega a rise in the J((2)) dynamic moments of inertia that is similar to the alignment gain observed in Zn-60. A comparison of the rotational band configurations and their J((2)) moments of inertia for light Zn isotopes suggests that the rise in J((2)) is most likely caused by np interactions associated with the valence protons and neutrons occupying the g(9/2) intruder orbits.
