- This book honors and is in memorial to Kenneth Hultqvist who helped initiate the broader research project to which this volume contributes. This book examines changes in the politics of knowledge in modern social life. The contributors provide important interventions in contemporary discussions about power, change, and the challenges that were raised in the Enlightenment about knowledge, reason, and the possibilities of humanity. The studies in the book examine a range of social programs and educational reforms to understand their implications, assumptions and consequences. Firstly, the chapters contribute to an international discussion on the historical relationships between social change, political rationalities, and the technologies of the self in a range of social life that included pedagogy. Secondly, the book offers new ways of studying and understanding the relation of the welfare state, social and education sciences, and todays configurations of liberal governing. Thirdly, the discussion brings into focus and critiques the distinctions of social and educational theories that differentiate "context" and programs, divides discourse from the "real", separates the subjective and objective and the personal and the public, and disconnects civil society from the state "reason" in modern government. "Trots sin ojämnhet är boken väl värd att läsa. Ansatsen bidrar till att skapa utrymme för reflektion kring vår samtid och de sätt varpå vi talar om skola, utbildning och framtid. Hur kommer det sig att vi talar om ett kunskapssamhälle? Vad har gjort ett sådant talesätt möjligt och vad för effekter i form av exkluderingspraktiker har det? Det är frågor som kan relateras till den förhoppning författarna har om att boken och det forskningsprojekt boken är kopplad till skall leda till 'an expanded, problematizing discussion of ongoing changes in the politics of knowledge in modern social life' (s 17). En god ambition som andas kritik i form av exempel i motsats till en mer grundläggande och föreskrivande kritik, något som inte är allt för vanligt i utbildningsvetenskaplig forskning idag."

- Due to the difficulties of finding superconformal Lagrangian theories for multiple M2-branes, we will in this paper instead focus on the field equations. By relaxing the requirement of a Lagrangian formulation we can explore the possibility of having structure constants fABCD satisfying the fundamental identity but which are not totally antisymmetric. We exemplify this discussion by making use of an explicit choice of a non-antisymmetric fABCD constructed from the Lie algebra structure constants fabc of an arbitrary gauge group. Although this choice of fABCD does not admit an obvious Lagrangian description, it does reproduce the correct SYM theory for a stack of N D2-branes to leading order in gYM−1 upon reduction and, moreover, it sheds new light on the centre of mass coordinates for multiple M2-branes.

- The reaction kinetics for a number of reductive openings of methyl 2,3-di-O-benzyl-4,6-O-benzylidene-alpha-d-glucopyranoside have been investigated. Openings to give free HO-6 (using BH(3).THF-AlCl(3)-THF or LiAlH(4)-AlCl(3)-Et(2)O) follow first order kinetics, while reactions yielding free HO-4 (using BH(3).NMe(3)-AlCl(3)-THF or BH(3).NMe(3)-BF(3).OEt(2)-THF) follow higher order kinetics. The addition of water to the BH(3).NMe(3)-AlCl(3)-THF results in faster reactions. The BH(3).SMe(2)-AlCl(3)-THF system constitutes a borderline case, yielding both free HO-6 (by a first order reaction) and free HO-4 (by a higher order reaction). These results correlate well with the concept of regioselectivity by activation of borane complexes.

- Neurofibromatosis is associated with mid-aortic dysplasia, renal artery aneurysms and renal artery ostial stenosis, or occlusions in about 1% of cases. We describe a novel approach to recanalize an occluded renal artery in a 10-year-old girl with neurofibromatosis and difficulty in pharmacologically controlling her hypertension. Normally, when reconstruction is required, an open operative technique is used. We report on the combined use of laparoscopic exposure and percutaneous retrograde puncture of the occluded renal artery, which could be recanalized and stented. The pros and cons of this new approach are discussed.
