  • Acknowledging, negotiating, and reporting ‘uncomfortable truths’ in action research
  • 2023
  • In: Educational Action Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0965-0792 .- 1747-5074. ; 31:5, s. 909-919
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Critical action research is a praxis-oriented professional learning practice. Such practice requires a move beyond viewing action research as simply a technical or practical method for teacher development; instead, it strives for critical and participatory research. When action research is reduced to a technicist process for professional learning, there is a tendency for valorising reported findings, so seemingly ‘celebratory’ stories emerge. Yet, the process of changing practices is complex and challenging. By sharing some of our own’ uncomfortable truths,’ we reveal the often-hidden realities of action research as spaces of contestation and negotiation, where uncomfortable truths are shared, examined, and sometimes silenced. This engagement in the form of ‘reflexivity of discomfort’ helps shed light on the need for Action Research to be (re)considered as more than a project and instead as a praxis-orientated approach that requires balanced reporting.

  • Learning from Experiences: A Brief Reflection on the Cartagena Assembly

    • In the Nordic countries we have a concept closely related to education and understood as an open-ended educational ideal involving growing as a human being to participate in society as a democratic citizen. This concept is bildning in Swedish and is hard to translate into English. Most often the German word “bildung” is used. In this essay I draw on the concept to discuss an experience with knowledge democracy five years ago. I will use the Swedish word throughout this essay reflecting briefly on my experiences of taking part in the first Global Assembly for Knowledge Democracy in Cartagena, Colombia in 2017.

  • Middle leading as a practice for enabling professional learning.
  • 2023
  • In: International Encyclopedia of Education 4th Edition. - : Elsevier Science. - 9780128186299
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Middle leading is a concept being used to enhance local school development. However, it is not a concept with a clear definition. It is either used for teachers facilitating their colleagues in a school or for leaders organizing school development in a district. In this study we use the case of a specific school site to explore how the organization enable professional learning among the teachers. By using the theory of practice architectures as a lens for analyzing interviews with leaders at different levels in the organization we found middle leaders at two levels striving for the same goal, middle leaders as facilitating colleagues and middle leaders as managing professional learning in the schools. Due to dialogues and trust hierarchical patterns are not present.

  • Educational Action Research for Being
  • 2023
  • In: Nordic Studies in Education. - : Cappelen Damm AS - Cappelen Damm Akademisk. - 1891-5914 .- 1891-5949. ; 43:1, s. 78-93
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The article describes the characteristics of educational action research on the basis of its development in three Nordic countries, namely Sweden, Norway and Finland. The characterisation begins with a reflection on the Anglo-Saxon variants of action research within education. Thereafter follows a democratic and participatory conceptualisation of action research identified through a description of its formation within working life practices. This conceptualisation is traced back and interpreted in terms of bildning, collective pedagogical practices within folkbildning and in relation to pedagogik as a basis for teachers’ professional knowledge base. The characteristics of educational action research are encapsulated as action research for being.
