    • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze to what extent differences in health between groups of different origin remain after considering differences in education, income and labor market status, and whether there exists any patterns according to the socioeconomic character of the country of origin. Design: The study is based on two data sources; Longitudinal Database for Education, Income and Employment, (LOUISE) and the Hospital Discharge Register (HDR). The data set consists of all Swedish and foreign born individuals born in 1945, 1955 and 1965, who were Swedish residents in 1990. The risk of hospitalization is analyzed for the period 1990–2001 using binomial logit regression. Results: When only demographic characteristics are controlled for, most immigrant groups display higher rates of hospital discharge records than native Swedes, but when education, income and labor market status is introduced into the model, only Nordic immigrants display levels of severe morbidity that are significantly higher than the levels for Swedish born. Among welfare recipients, only immigrants from Finland display higher levels of severe morbidity than native Swedes; most immigrant groups display significantly lower levels of severe morbidity than native Swedes. The analysis shows no evidence of a systematic relationship between health status and the socioeconomic character of the country of origin. Conclusion: Higher levels of severe morbidity among immigrants compared to Swedes seem to be explained by the socioeconomic situation in Sweden, rather than health conditions and socioeconomic circumstances before immigration. There is a strong correlation between a weak labor market integration and high levels of severe morbidity in non-Nordic immigrant groups.

  • Numerical Simulation of Aerodynamic Pressure on Sound Barriers from High-Speed Trains with Different Nose Lengths
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Applied Sciences. - : MDPI. - 2076-3417. ; 14:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For high-speed railway sound barriers, determining the aerodynamic pressure generated by high-speed trains is crucial for their structural design. This paper investigates the distribution of aerodynamic pressure on the sound barrier caused by high-speed trains with different nose lengths, utilizing the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation method. The accuracy of the numerical simulation method employed is verified through comparison with field test results from the literature. Research findings reveal that when a high-speed train passes through a sound barrier, significant “head wave” and “wake wave” effects occur, with the pressure peak of the “head wave” being notably greater than that of the “wake wave”. As the distance between the sound barrier and the center of the train gradually increases, the aerodynamic pressure on the sound barrier gradually decreases. The nose length of the train has a considerable impact on the aerodynamic pressure exerted on the sound barrier. The streamlined shape of longer-nose trains can significantly reduce the aerodynamic effects on the sound barrier, resulting in a notably smaller pressure peak compared to shorter-nose trains. Finally, by establishing the relationship between the train nose length and the aerodynamic pressure peak, a calculation formula for the train-induced aerodynamic pressure acting on the sound barrier is proposed, taking into account the nose length of the high-speed train.

  • Interfacial kinetic ski friction
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It is no doubt, that the ski glide over the snow is a very complicated object of research. However, ski glide is just a one area of many other areas of human knowledge. As a rule, the scientists and practitioners, who work in these areas, operate with some publicly expressed more or less solid hypotheses. These researchers work with one hypothesis until another and a better one comes up. Our literature studies and our own observations regarding modern skis preparations, did not give us any solid hypotheses, which are able to explain the actual form and content of this procedure. The present work is an attempt to reveal such hypotheses. Conclusion: To achieve an optimal glide on skis with the base (the ski sole) made of some high hydrophobic durable polymer, e.g. UHMWPE, PTFE; we only have to create an adequate topography (texture) on the ski running surface, adequate to the actual snow conditions.
