  • TandEM : Titan and Enceladus mission
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Experimental astronomy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0922-6435 .- 1572-9508. ; 23:3, s. 893-946
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • TandEM was proposed as an L-class (large) mission in response to ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 Call, and accepted for further studies, with the goal of exploring Titan and Enceladus. The mission concept is to perform in situ investigations of two worlds tied together by location and properties, whose remarkable natures have been partly revealed by the ongoing Cassini-Huygens mission. These bodies still hold mysteries requiring a complete exploration using a variety of vehicles and instruments. TandEM is an ambitious mission because its targets are two of the most exciting and challenging bodies in the Solar System. It is designed to build on but exceed the scientific and technological accomplishments of the Cassini-Huygens mission, exploring Titan and Enceladus in ways that are not currently possible (full close-up and in situ coverage over long periods of time). In the current mission architecture, TandEM proposes to deliver two medium-sized spacecraft to the Saturnian system. One spacecraft would be an orbiter with a large host of instruments which would perform several Enceladus flybys and deliver penetrators to its surface before going into a dedicated orbit around Titan alone, while the other spacecraft would carry the Titan in situ investigation components, i.e. a hot-air balloon (MontgolfiSre) and possibly several landing probes to be delivered through the atmosphere.

  • Adsorption of n-butyl-substituted tetrathiafulvalene dodecanethiol on gold
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-9797 .- 1095-7103. ; 287:2, s. 388-393
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivative substituted with two butyl- and two dodecylthiol chains is adsorbed on polycrystalline gold. The TTF-derived thiol adsorbates were characterized by ellipsometry, contact angle goniometry, infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The molecule is strongly anchored on the gold surface through the sulfur terminating the alkylthiol chains. On the average, the TTF moiety is oriented extended away from the gold surface. The topmost layer of the film containing the dibutyl chains is disordered with gauche defects. The molecule was organized with majority of the alkylthiol chains bound to the gold surface. There are indications of pinholes in the monolayer due to steric hindrance of the bulky TTF rings. The molecular systems consisting of an electroactive pi-system such as TTF, are promising for thin-film field effect transistor application.

  • Personal, social and environmental predictors of daily fruit and vegetable intake in 11-year-old children in nine European countries
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0954-3007 .- 1476-5640. ; 62:7, s. 834-841
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To investigate potential personal, social and physical environmental predictors of daily fruit intake and daily vegetable intake in 11-year-old boys and girls in nine European countries.SUBJECTS: The total sample size was 13 305 (90.4% participation rate).RESULTS: Overall, 43.2% of the children reported to eat fruit every day, 46.1% reported to eat vegetables every day. Daily fruit intake and daily vegetable intake was mainly associated with knowledge of the national recommendations, positive self-efficacy, positive liking and preference, parental modeling and demand and bringing fruit to school (odds ratio between 1.40 and 2.42, P<0.02). These factors were associated fairly consistently with daily fruit intake across all nine European countries, implying that a rather uniform intervention strategy to promote fruit can be used across Europe. For vegetables, the pattern was, however, less consistent. Differences between countries in cooking and preparing vegetables might be responsible for this larger diversity.CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that especially a combination of personal and social factors is related to daily fruit and vegetable intake in schoolchildren. This shows that a comprehensive multilevel intervention strategy based upon a series of individual and social correlates will be most promising in the promotion of daily fruit and vegetable intake in children.

  • Supporting platform for heterogeneous sensor network operation based on unmanned vehicles systems and wireless sensor nodes
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 2009 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium, Volumes 1 and 2. - New York : IEEE Press. - 9781424435036 ; , s. 786-791
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Advances in vehicle intelligence technology is enabling the development of systems composed of unmanned vehicles, which are able to interact with devices spread on the environment in order to take decisions related to their movements. Sensor networks represent an area that can profit a lot of this new possibilities, as autonomous vehicles can be used to carry sensor devices, which interacting with static sensor nodes can enhance the results provided by the overall system. However, some problems arise in applications' development in such systems due to the network nodes heterogeneity, and also the dynamicity of the environment in which they are deployed, which changes constantly. Thus, new platform solutions are necessary to handle the heterogeneous nodes capabilities in order to facilitate coordination and integration among them. This paper proposes a supporting infrastructure to address these problems composed of an adaptive middleware and a customizable sensor node platform. The goal is to support cooperation in heterogeneous sensor networks, which are composed by static and mobile nodes with different capabilities. The middleware adapts itself in order to manage the very distinct computing resources of the nodes, and also changes in the environment and in the application demands. The customizable sensor node platform allows optimizations in hw/sw modules to meet specific application requirements, allowing the creation of low-end and resource rich nodes that work in an integrated network. In order to illustrate the proposed approach, a system for military surveillance applications is presented as case study.

  • Comparative study on normalization procedures for cluster analysis of gene expression datasets
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Normalization before clustering is often needed for proximity indices, such as Euclidian distance, which are sensitive to differences in the magnitude or scales of the attributes. The goal is to equalize the size or magnitude and the variability of these features. This can also be seen as a way to adjust the relative weighting of the attributes. In this context, we present a first large scale data driven comparative study of three normalization procedures applied to cancer gene expression data. The results are presented in terms of the recovering of the true cluster structure as found by five different clustering algorithms. ©2008 IEEE.

  • Ranking and selecting clustering algorithms using a meta-learning approach
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a novel framework that applies a meta-learning approach to clustering algorithms. Given a dataset, our meta-learning approach provides a ranking for the candidate algorithms that could be used with that dataset. This ranking could, among other things, support non-expert users in the algorithm selection task. In order to evaluate the framework proposed, we implement a prototype that employs regression support vector machines as the meta-learner. Our case study is developed in the context of cancer gene expression microarray datasets. © 2008 IEEE.

  • The genome of the model beetle and pest Tribolium castaneum.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nature. - 1476-4687. ; 452:7190, s. 949-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tribolium castaneum is a representative of earth’s most numerous eukaryotic order, a powerful model organism for the study of generalized insect development, and also an important pest of stored agricultural products. We describe its genome sequence here. This omnivorous beetle has evolved an ability to interact with a diverse chemical environment as evidenced by large expansions in odorant and gustatory receptors, as well as p450 and other detoxification enzymes. Developmental patterns in Tribolium are more representative of other arthropods than those found in Drosophila, a fact represented in gene content and function. For one, Tribolium has retained more ancestral genes involved in cell-cell communication than Drosophila, and some are expressed in the growth zone crucial for axial elongation in short germ development. Systemic RNAi in T. castaneum appears to use mechanisms distinct from those found in C. elegans, but nevertheless offers similar power for the elucidation of gene function and identification of targets for selective insect control.

  • Volumetric intensity dependence on the formation of molecular and atomic ions within a high intensity laser focus
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1879-1123 .- 1044-0305. ; 16:1, s. 82-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mechanism of atomic and molecular ionization in intense, ultra-short laser fields is a subject which continues to receive considerable attention. An inherent difficulty with techniques involving the tight focus of a laser beam is the continuous distribution of intensities contained within the focus, which can vary over several orders of magnitude. The present study adopts time of flight mass spectrometry coupled with a high intensity (8 X 10(15) Wcm(-2)), ultra-short (20 fs) pulse laser in order to investigate the ionization and dissociation of the aromatic molecule benzene-d1 (C6H5D) as a function of intensity within a focused laser beam, by scanning the laser focus in the direction of propagation, while detecting ions produced only in a "thin" slice (400 and 800 mum) of the focus. The resultant TOF mass spectra varies significantly, highlighting the dependence on the range of specific intensities accessed and their volumetric weightings on the ionization/dissociation pathways accessed.
