  • Basic instrumentation for Hall A at Jefferson Lab
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 522:3, s. 294-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • High-order-harmonic generation: towards laser-induced phase-matching control and relativistic effects
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics B. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0946-2171 .- 1432-0649. ; 74:6, s. 509-515
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a review of some recent results on high-order-harmonic generation, aiming at optimizing the photon flux to allow for future applications in extreme-ultra-violet non-linear optics. We first present new schemes to control phase matching of high harmonics in gases, by using the effect of the spatially varying atomic phase displayed by the high harmonics. An enhancement by a factor of 50 is observed in neon in conditions for which the gradient of the atomic dispersion balances the electronic dispersion. A new scheme to manipulate the laser field was demonstrated, and shown to improve phase matching. We then turn to high-harmonic generation by solid targets, and show that high harmonics generated by an intense 30-fs laser pulse remain collimated even at the threshold of the relativistic regime.

  • Review of particle physics
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D (Particles and Fields). - 0556-2821. ; 66:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This biennial Review summarizes much of Particle Physics Using data from previous editions, plus 2205 new measurements from 667 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons We also summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as Higgs bosons, heavy neutrinos, and supersymmetric particles All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables We also give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as the Standard Model, particle detectors, probability, and statistics This edition features expanded coverage of CP violation in B mesons and of neutrino oscillations For the first time we cover searches for evidence of extra dimensions (both in the particle listings and in a new review) Another new review is on Grand Unified Theories A booklet is available containing the Summary Tables and abbreviated versions of some of the other sections of this full Review All tables, listings, and reviews (and errata) are also available on the Particle Data Group website http //pdg 1b1 gov.

  • Two- and three-photon ionization of rare gases using femtosecond harmonic pulses generated in a gas medium
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 64:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fifth harmonic of a 60-fs 10-Hz terawatt titanium:sapphire laser generated in Xe gas is used to ionize Xe and Kr atoms by nonresonant two-photon absorption and At atoms through a quasiresonant three-photon process. At relatively low harmonic yields, the variation of the number of Kr and Xe ions with the number of harmonic photons is quadratic. At high harmonic yields, it deviates from a quadratic behavior, which we attribute to the influence of ionization in the harmonic process distorting the harmonic wave front. The two-photon ionization cross sections in Xe and Kr at 160 nm are found to be comparable.

  • Evaluation of the collection efficiency of upper ocean sub-photic-layer sediment traps : A 24-month in situ calibration in the open Baltic Sea using 234Th
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Limnology and Oceanography. - : Wiley. - 1541-5856. ; 2:2, s. 62-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The collection efficiency of cylindrical sediment traps of common design was assessed in situ for more than 2 y in an offshore shelf regime using the 234Th proxy and simultaneously collected hydrological and biogeochemical parameters. The traps were found to systematically record an undertrapping bias of 234Th by, on average, a factor of three (range 0.8 to 10). Seasonal variations in trapping efficiency were related to the seasonally varying ballasting properties of the settling particle pool. Sediment trap 234Th fluxes agreed within a factor of two of the estimated 234Th export from the overlying surface waters in the winter-spring periods in both 1999 and 2000 and appeared related to a particle pool that included, presumably rapidly sinking, mineral particles and diatom tests acting as ballast. In contrast, discrimination against slowly settling organic-rich aggregates of apparent exudate origin resulted in undertrapping of 234Th by factors of three to ten throughout the summerfall seasons. These data are consistent with hydrodynamic predictions that the collection efficiency of sinking particles is inversely related to their intrinsic settling velocities. Recognition of changing particle composition along a settling velocity spectrum combine with carbon mass balance restrictions to suggest that these 234Th-based collection efficiencies, ranging from 0.1 to 1, may not be directly applicable to "correct" sediment trap fluxes of other components, such as organic carbon. However, the 234Th-derived insights of settling-velocity-related undertrapping may beneficially be taken into account when interpreting trap records both in studies of biogeochemical element fluxes and in phytoplankton ecology

  • Dealing with the unexpected : Critical incidents in the LEGO Mindstorms team
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Human Relations. - : SAGE Publications. - 0018-7267 .- 1741-282X. ; 56:9, s. 1057-1082
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses the relative lack of empirical studies of how self-managed teams in high velocity environments handle unexpected critical incidents. It presents an interpretive case study of the LEGO Mindstorms project team, and focuses in particular on how this team responded to three critical incidents, Our study results in three core findings concerning how this team responded to the unexpected in its high velocity environment. These include: the importance of increasing presence; creating a context for a shared and emotionally grounded identity; and developing a shared set of guiding principles for action, behaviour, and decision-making. The authors further describe interconnections among these three core findings, proposing a higher-level 'virtuous circle' that illustrates how this team responded effectively to critical incidents.
