  • Nursing staff's experience of appearance issues in various nursing situations
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC Nursing. - : BioMed Central Ltd.. - 1472-6955. ; 20:1, s. 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Health care professionals frequently interact with unknown patients in a process involving appearance-based judgements and priority-setting, all of which has an effect on health care equality. The healthcare provider-patient interaction is also highly relevant for the awareness and support of patients' appearance concerns, with an associated possibility for improving patients' satisfaction with their appearance and health. The aim was therefore to explore nursing staff's experience of patients' appearance issues in various nursing situations, with the purpose to facilitate awareness raising and knowledge development. METHOD: A qualitative research approach with focus group interviews was chosen due to the exploratory aim of the study. Five semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with 24 nursing staff in total (19 women and five men). The participants' ages varied (20 to 45 years) as did their professional nursing experience. The interviews lasted approximately one hour, were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed through thematic analysis. RESULTS: The thematic analysis resulted in the two themes Patient perspective and Professional nursing role, with associated subthemes. The findings showed the importance and impact of appearance issues in nursing situations and how these are linked to the health of the patients. Some groups of patients were identified as more vulnerable than others, which was associated with health care inequalities and health disparities. Value-based strategies along with knowledge, and skills for holistic person-centred care were identified as important resources for the development of appearance-related awareness and support in various nursing situations. CONCLUSION: Strategies for improvement can be realised through the educational system for nursing staff, but mainly by using collective reflective learning forums in different workplaces. An empowerment approach is considered a useful framework for the implementation of holistic person-centred care, functioning as a resource for appearance-related awareness and support in various nursing situations. However, more research is needed on the complex and challenging phenomenon of appearance issues in nursing situations. Knowledge development related to successful person-centred strategies for appearance-related awareness and support is important, especially strategies with a salutogenic perspective.

  • Multiplexed experimental strategies for fragment library screening using SPR biosensors
  • 2020
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Surface plasmon resonance biosensor technology (SPR) is ideally suited for fragment-based lead discovery. However, generally suitable experimental procedures or detailed protocols are lacking, especially for structurally or physico-chemically challenging targets or when tool compounds are lacking. Success depends on accounting for the features of both the target and the chemical library, purposely designing screening experiments for identification and validation of hits with desired specificity and mode-of-action, and availability of orthogonal methods capable of confirming fragment hits. By adopting a multiplexed strategy, the range of targets and libraries amenable to an SPR biosensor-based approach for identifying hits is considerably expanded. We here illustrate innovative strategies using five challenging targets and variants thereof. Two libraries of 90 and 1056 fragments were screened using two different flow-based SPR biosensor systems, allowing different experimental approaches. Practical considerations and procedures accounting for the characteristics of the proteins and libraries, and that increase robustness, sensitivity, throughput and versatility are highlighted.Competing Interest StatementAnna Moberg, Maria T. • Hidden messages in school mathematics texts
  • 2000
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An analysis of the TIMSS released mathematics items as well as of about a hundred examples of applications of school mathematics from textbooks and teaching materials (from countries with advanced economies) reveals different ways of how values are assumed in school mathematics. It will be argued that this is indicative of the fact that the different levels of mathematics education are aiming at an introduction into rather than at an evaluation or critique of the various practices of applying mathematics. The various differing practices of using mathematics may be conceptualised in terms of different areas of application and associated aims, of different perceptions of the relation of the mathematical concepts to "reality".To identify which practices are indexed by the texts and to get a basis for analysing the implicit aims and perceptions of mathematics, the content of the problem statements and questions, as well as some textual features were investigated. The categories that emerged in the course of the investigation were used for further analysis. It will be suggested that genuine examples of applications, especially those pointing to aspects of social life strongly influenced by mathematics, can provide a source for reflecting and assessing the use of mathematics. This critical evaluation requires critiquing both the application of a model and the appropriateness of that model to the particular context.

  • Reproducing Languages, Translating Bodies : Approaches to Speech, Translation and Cultural Identity in Early European Sound Film
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study discusses and analyses recorded/filmed speech, translation, and cultural identity in film discourses in early European sound film. The purpose is to frame these issues from a number of theoretical perspectives in order to highlight relations between media, speech and translation. The points of departure are 1. “universal language” vs. “linguistic diversity”, 2. “media transposition” vs. “language translation”, and 3, “speech as words” vs. “speech as body”. An important aspect in order to discuss these topics is the problem of “versions”, both different translated versions, and versions in different media of speech representation. The correlation of theory with a historical focus offers a contextualisation of translation as an issue of cinematic culture, and also sheds new light on topics that previously have been referred to as details (such as foreign accents in film) or as phenomena considered to be unrelated to “cinematic quality” (such as “filmed theatre”).The object of analysis consists of German, French and Swedish films, trade and fan press, and film theory from the 1920s and 1930s. The study begins with a theoretical and historical introduction, which addresses representation of speech in reproduction media focusing on early sound technology predominantly from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Chapter two offers a discussion of speech as signifier of differentiated ethnicity in relation to a utopia of universal language embodied in film and sound media. Chapter three addresses film speech as a multimedia issue revealing a problematic of version as a context for the various means of translating. Chapter four offers a general discussion of film translation in the period of transition to sound with a focus on dubbing, subtitles and inter-titling. The two last chapters deal exclusively with the multiple language version film, a translation practice based on re-making the same script in different languages.

  • Screenwriting, authorship and gender in Swedish cinema of the 1940s : Dagmar Edqvist’s ‘The Ingegerd Bremssen case’
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Scandinavian Cinema. - : Intellect. - 2042-7891 .- 2042-7905. ; 12:2, s. 179-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through a case study analysis, this article suggests that women’s screen-writing in Sweden in the 1940s eluci-dates important aspects of cinematic authorship in relation to cultural hierarchies and gender. The analysis consists of a contextualized reading of the 1942 film Fallet Ingegerd Bremssen (‘The Ingegerd Bremssen case’), based on Dagmar Edqvist’s psychological novel about a rape and its after-effects, with a screenplay writ-ten by the author herself. A textual adaptation analysis – focusing on the screenwriting style and how the woman’s perspective and experience in the novel is transformed in the adaptation – is contextualized against the historical backdrop of the changes in screenwriting practices during this period as well as of the critical reception of the film.
