  • Growing Up in Mommy’s Blog
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Asiascape: Digital Asia. - : Brill. - 2214-2304 .- 2214-2312. ; 2:3, s. 213-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article introduces child-raising blogs in China. Written by mothers and their 6- to 12-year-old offspring, child-raising blogs contain diverse material from and about a child’s daily life and issues relating to a mother raising her offspring. Six blogs from mothers and their daughters are studied under the aspect of generational relations and the voice of children online with the aim of understanding whether or how child- raising blogs in China are part of a changing discourse about the mother-daughter relationship. The article finds that as the objectified state of cultural capital, blogs present a smoothed-out hierarchical relationship between mother and daughter, and carry the possibility of bestowing a voice on children. Due to their continuous and permanent structure, which records opinions and content deemed important by the authors, blogs could be a catalyst or at least a magnifying lens for changes that are already occurring in family relations offline.

  • Defining a Simplified Yet "Realistic" Equation of State for Seawater
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Oceanography. - 0022-3670 .- 1520-0485. ; 45:10, s. 2564-2579
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing realization that the nonlinear nature of the equation of state has a deep impact on the global ocean circulation; however, the understanding of the global effects of these nonlinearities remains elusive. This is partly because of the complicated formulation of the seawater equation of state making it difficult to handle in theoretical studies. In this paper, a hierarchy of polynomial equations of state of increasing complexity, optimal in a least squares sense, is presented. These different simplified equations of state are then used to simulate the ocean circulation in a global 2 degrees-resolution configuration. Comparisons between simulated ocean circulations confirm that nonlinear effects are of major importance, in particular influencing the circulation through determination of the static stability below the mixed layer, thus controlling rates of exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean interior. It is found that a simple polynomial equation of state, with a quadratic term in temperature (for cabbeling), a temperature-pressure product term (for thermobaricity), and a linear term in salinity, that is, only four tuning parameters, is enough to simulate a reasonably realistic global circulation. The best simulation is obtained when the simplified equation of state is forced to have an accurate thermal expansion coefficient near the freezing point, highlighting the importance of polar regions for the global stratification. It is argued that this simplified equation of state will be of great value for theoretical studies and pedagogical purposes.

  • Socioeconomic disadvantage in childhood and later risk of schizophrenia and other psychoses : national register-based studies
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Aim: The aim of this thesis was to analyse the association between various types of indicators of socioeconomic disadvantage in childhood and the risk of later developing schizophrenia and other psychoses. Furthermore, the importance of socioeconomic disadvantage was explored in relation to immigration, school performance, and an indicator of genetic liability for psychosis. Methods: The study populations were based on register linkages of several Swedish registers. They were identified in the Multi-Generation Register and were followed in the National Patient Register regarding admissions for schizophrenia and other psychoses. Exposure of up to seven different indicators of childhood socioeconomic disadvantage (housing, single-parent household, parental socioeconomic classification, parental employment, households receiving social welfare benefits, parental early retirement, and parental education) was obtained via linkage to the national Population and Housing Censuses performed every 5 years between 1960 and 1990, and the Income and Taxation Registers. School performance data was obtained via the School Register. Hazard Ratios were estimated by multivariate Cox proportional hazard models. Results: Five of seven indicators of childhood socioeconomic disadvantage were associated with later risk of schizophrenia and other psychoses (fully adjusted HRs from 1.2 to 1.7) (study I-IV). The risks increased with increasing number of exposures to the different indicators of socioeconomic disadvantage (study I, IV). First and second generation immigrants had increased risks for schizophrenia and other psychoses (HRs 1.4-3.1 and 1.0-2.0 respectively), compared with the Swedish majority population. These risks decreased considerably after adjusting for indicators of socioeconomic disadvantage (study II). In an adoption design (study III) both indicators of genetic liability (HR=4.7) and disadvantaged socioeconomic position (HRs 1.2-2.0) were independently associated with an increased risk for non-affective psychosis. The risk was considerably higher among adoptees exposed to both types of indicators (HRs from 5.7 to 15.0). Synergy indexes were larger than 1 (3.2, 2.6, 1.2). In study IV, risks were increased for schizophrenia (HR=1.9), other non-affective psychoses (HR=3.0), and affective psychoses (HR=2.3) in association with poor average grade, compared with those with a midrange average grade at graduation from compulsory school. Adjustments for socioeconomic position of the family reduced these estimates marginally (schizophrenia: HR=1.7, other non-affective psychoses: HR=2.8, affective psychoses: HR=2.1). Conclusion: The results indicate that socioeconomic disadvantage during childhood or foetal life contributes to the risk of developing schizophrenia and other psychoses. Furthermore, this risk may even be relatively higher in individuals with a genetic liability for psychosis. Thus, influencing the social situation in childhood may have beneficial effects on the occurrence of psychosis. Socioeconomic disadvantage may also contribute to the increased risk of psychoses in immigrants. However, childhood socioeconomic disadvantage did not substantially affect the risk of psychoses associated with low school performance. In summary, there is support for social disadvantage in the aetiology of psychosis. This knowledge may open up for preventive methods on a societal level, perhaps targeting vulnerable groups as immigrants and individuals with genetic liability.

  • Profit as a Means or an End? An analysis of diverse approaches to sustainable business
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses tradeoffs between sustainability objectives and profit, examining the implications of the argument that sustainable businesses should see profit as a means, not an end. It highlights that there are two main ways in which a business can see profit as a means: first, by maintaining its focus on a different end (namely social and ecological objectives); and secondly, by ensuring that profit is not an end in itself by excluding private financial rights. These two criteria are applied to examine a range of theoretical approaches, incorporation structures, and third-party certifications that have been developed with the aim of making business sustainable. The discussion highlights inconsistencies, ambiguities, and shortfalls of these approaches and outlines ways to advance the theory and practice of sustainable business.

  • Internet of Things : Right to Data from a European Perspective
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: New Technology, Big Data and the Law. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811050374 - 9789811050381 ; , s. 65-96
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The amount of data collected and processed by smart objects has increased exponentially over the last few years. The use of this technology, known as the Internet of Things or IoT, leads to new challenges and applications of existing data protection laws. Data resulting from the use of such technology has wide-ranging consequences for individual privacy as a large amount of the data in question is often personal in nature. However, the Internet of Things has a wider impact and also creates questions within such fields as contract law and intellectual property law, due in part to the lack of a clear property right to data. In addition, issues of data security are of importance when such technology is used, particularly when considering liability for data loss. This chapter will deal with the legal issues connected to the Internet of Things from a European perspective, taking into account existing laws and in light of the new European Data Protection Regulation. The underlying theme of the chapter focuses on the existence of legal rights to data created through the use of the Internet of Things and the various stakeholders that may have an interest in the data, from the service provider and the individual user, to intermediaries and those involved in allowing smart objects to fulfill their potential. The question of whether the legal challenges identified in the chapter can be overcome will also be addressed, along with the future role of law in the use and development of the Internet of Things.

  • The Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ)-further validation including a confirmatory factor analysis and a comparison with the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Pain. - : Wiley. - 1090-3801 .- 1532-2149. ; 13:7, s. 760-768
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Acceptance of pain and distress has lately appeared as an important factor in determining peoples' ability to restore functioning in the presence of chronic pain. Although treatments based on cognitive behaviour therapy are beginning to incorporate acceptance strategies, there is still a lack of reliable and valid instruments to assess relevant processes in such interventions. The Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ) was originally constructed as part of the development of an acceptance oriented treatment approach for pain patients. A revised 20-item version of the instrument with two subscales has shown adequate reliability and validity. In the present study, a Swedish translation of CPAQ was evaluated with 611 participants reporting chronic pain and symptoms of whiplash associated disorders. This study sought to further assess the psychometric properties of the instrument and to investigate its relation to another important measure of pain adjustment, the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia. Due to low intercorrelations with other items, item 16 was excluded. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported the previously suggested two-factor solution. Furthermore, the internal consistencies were good for the subscales (activities engagement and pain willingness) as well as the total scale. Hierarchical regression analyses illustrated strong relations with criteria variables (e.g. disability and life satisfaction). In general, the activities engagement subscale contributed more than pain willingness to the prediction of criteria variables. Furthermore, results illustrated that CPAQ explained more variance than the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia in pain intensity, disability, life satisfaction, and depression.
