  • A control oriented strategy of disruption prediction to avoid the configuration collapse of tokamak reactors
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of thermonuclear fusion consists of producing electricity from the coalescence of light nuclei in high temperature plasmas. The most promising route to fusion envisages the confinement of such plasmas with magnetic fields, whose most studied configuration is the tokamak. Disruptions are catastrophic collapses affecting all tokamak devices and one of the main potential showstoppers on the route to a commercial reactor. In this work we report how, deploying innovative analysis methods on thousands of JET experiments covering the isotopic compositions from hydrogen to full tritium and including the major D-T campaign, the nature of the various forms of collapse is investigated in all phases of the discharges. An original approach to proximity detection has been developed, which allows determining both the probability of and the time interval remaining before an incoming disruption, with adaptive, from scratch, real time compatible techniques. The results indicate that physics based prediction and control tools can be developed, to deploy realistic strategies of disruption avoidance and prevention, meeting the requirements of the next generation of devices.

  • Electron Backscatter Diffraction Investigation on Microstructure Evolution of TiB2(p)/Al-Cu Composite after Single-Pass Equal Channel Angular Pressing for Formability Assessment
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of materials engineering and performance (Print). - : Springer. - 1059-9495 .- 1544-1024.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, the in situ 4 wt.% TiB2(p)/Al-Cu composite was prepared through a mixed salt reaction method. To evaluate its formability, hot isothermal compression tests were performed using a Gleeble−3500 system in a temperature range of 480-510 °C and a strain rate range of 0.1-10 s−1. A constitutive model of the composites with strain compensation was established, and the true stress–strain curves revealed that the composite exhibited favorable formability at 510 °C. Additionally, single-pass equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) processes were conducted at room temperature and 510 °C to investigate the microstructure evolution of the composite. The distribution of TiB2 particles was found to be influenced by deformation temperature, while the microstructural characteristics of the aluminum matrix were minimally affected. Furthermore, a comparison between the as-cast composite and the deformed composites revealed the presence of different preferred orientations in the two conditions, and the corresponding paths of texture evolution were estimated accordingly. Remarkably, after undergoing single-pass ECAP, the Schmid factors of composites remained nearly unchanged, demonstrating that deformed composites were still appropriate for processing and as such demonstrating a potential route also for formability assessment.

  • Observation of alpha-particles in recent D-T experiments on JET
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 64:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fusion reaction between deuterium and tritium, D(T,n)4 He is the main source of energy in future thermonuclear reactors. Alpha-particles (4 He-ions) born with an average energy of 3.5 MeV transferring energy to the thermal plasma during their slowing down, should provide the self-sustained D-T plasma burn. The adequate confinement of alpha-particles is essential to provide efficient heating of the bulk plasma and steady burning of a reactor plasma. That is why the fusion-born alpha-particle studies have been a priority task in the second D-T experiments (DTE2) on the Joint European Torus (JET) to understand the main mechanisms of their slowing down, redistribution and losses and to develop optimal plasma scenarios. JET with Be-wall and W-divertor, enhanced auxiliary heating systems and improved energetic-particle diagnostic capabilities, producing significant population of alpha-particles, provided the possibility for comprehensive studying of the alpha-particle behaviour. Selected results of the confined and lost alpha-particle measurements, evidence of alpha-particle self-heating and assessments of the fusion performance are presented in this paper giving an opportunity for further modelling and extrapolation to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor and burning plasma reactors.

  • Polymeric viologen-based electron transfer mediator for improving the photoelectrochemical water splitting on Sb2Se3 photocathode
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Fundamental Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 2667-3258. ; 4:2, s. 291-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The photogenerated charge carrier separation and transportation of inside photocathodes can greatly influence the performance of photoelectrochemical (PEC) H2 production devices. Coupling TiO2 with p-type semiconductors to construct heterojunction structures is one of the most widely used strategies to facilitate charge separation and transportation. However, the band position of TiO2 could not perfectly match with all p-type semiconductors. Here, taking antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) as an example, a rational strategy was developed by introducing a viologen electron transfer mediator (ETM) containing polymeric film (poly-1,1′-dially-[4,4′-bipyridine]-1,1′-diium, denoted as PV2+) at the interface between Sb2Se3 and TiO2 to regulate the energy band alignment, which could inhibit the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers of interfaces. With Pt as a catalyst, the constructed Sb2Se3/PV2+/TiO2/Pt photocathode showed a superior PEC hydrogen generation activity with a photocurrent density of −18.6 mA cm−2 vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a half-cell solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (HC-STH) of 1.54% at 0.17 V vs. RHE, which was much better than that of the related Sb2Se3/TiO2/Pt photocathode without PV2+ (−9.8 mA cm−2, 0.51% at 0.10 V vs. RHE).

  • The persistent shadow of the supermassive black hole of M 87: I. Observations, calibration, imaging, and analysis*
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 681
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration reported the first-ever event-horizon-scale images of a black hole, resolving the central compact radio source in the giant elliptical galaxy M 87. These images reveal a ring with a southerly brightness distribution and a diameter of ∼42 μas, consistent with the predicted size and shape of a shadow produced by the gravitationally lensed emission around a supermassive black hole. These results were obtained as part of the April 2017 EHT observation campaign, using a global very long baseline interferometric radio array operating at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. Here, we present results based on the second EHT observing campaign, taking place in April 2018 with an improved array, wider frequency coverage, and increased bandwidth. In particular, the additional baselines provided by the Greenland telescope improved the coverage of the array. Multiyear EHT observations provide independent snapshots of the horizon-scale emission, allowing us to confirm the persistence, size, and shape of the black hole shadow, and constrain the intrinsic structural variability of the accretion flow. We have confirmed the presence of an asymmetric ring structure, brighter in the southwest, with a median diameter of 43.3-3.1+1.5 μas. The diameter of the 2018 ring is remarkably consistent with the diameter obtained from the previous 2017 observations. On the other hand, the position angle of the brightness asymmetry in 2018 is shifted by about 30 relative to 2017. The perennial persistence of the ring and its diameter robustly support the interpretation that the ring is formed by lensed emission surrounding a Kerr black hole with a mass ∼6.5× 109M. The significant change in the ring brightness asymmetry implies a spin axis that is more consistent with the position angle of the large-scale jet.

  • Ground-based and additional science support for SMILE
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Earth and Planetary Physics. - : Science Press. - 2096-3955. ; 8:1, s. 275-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The joint European Space Agency and Chinese Academy of Sciences Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) mission will explore global dynamics of the magnetosphere under varying solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field conditions, and simultaneously monitor the auroral response of the Northern Hemisphere ionosphere. Combining these large-scale responses with medium and fine-scale measurements at a variety of cadences by additional ground-based and space-based instruments will enable a much greater scientific impact beyond the original goals of the SMILE mission. Here, we describe current community efforts to prepare for SMILE, and the benefits and context various experiments that have explicitly expressed support for SMILE can offer. A dedicated group of international scientists representing many different experiment types and geographical locations, the Ground-based and Additional Science Working Group, is facilitating these efforts. Preparations include constructing an online SMILE Data Fusion Facility, the discussion of particular or special modes for experiments such as coherent and incoherent scatter radar, and the consideration of particular observing strategies and spacecraft conjunctions. We anticipate growing interest and community engagement with the SMILE mission, and we welcome novel ideas and insights from the solar-terrestrial community.
