Measurement of the fine-structure splitting of the 4^(2)D state of lithium using level-crossing spectroscopy

- The fine-structure splitting of the 42D state in lithium was measured using stepwise laser excitation combined with level-crossing spectroscopy. The splitting was determined to be 456.2(0.8) MHz, a considerably higher value than the one obtained in a recent level-anticrossing measurement. The new value is in good agreement with the result of a Hartree-Fock calculation, 460.2 MHz.

Stark interaction for excited states in alkali atoms, investigated by laser spectroscopy

- The scalar polarizability constanta0 for excitedS- andD-states in rubidium and cesium was measured utilizing a two-step excitation scheme. An rf lamp and a single-mode dye laser were used to excite the atoms in a collimated atomic beam. Values ofa0 were determined for the 9–102S1/2 and 7–82D3/2 states of rubidium and for the 10–132S1/2, 9–102D3/2 and 9–112D5/2 states of cesium. Further, the isotope shift was evaluated in the 5579 Å rubidium line. A review of experimental polarizability constants for rubidium and cesium is given, and the results are compared with theoretical values.

- High-resolution laser spectroscopy measurements have been performed in the wavelength region around 4000 Å using a pulsed dye laser acting on a collimated atomic beam. Extra-cavity Fabry-Pérot filtering was used to achieve a narrow line-width of the laser light. Isotope shifts were measured in the 4216 Å and 4202 Å rubidium lines with the result ?s(87, 85)=124.3(4)MHz, and?s(87, 85) = 124.2(7)MHz, respectively, and in the 3988 Å ytterbium line with the resultds(176, 174)=-509(4)MHz, ?s(174, 172)=-530(4) MHz.

- By pulse modulating or deflecting a CW dye laser beam, cascade-free lifetime determinations at high spectral resolution can be performed with the decayed-coincidence technique using measuring times of about 1 minute. The method is illustrated by lifetime measurements for the 72P3/21/2 levels of cesium.

- The hyperfine structure for the 6, 7 and 8 2 S 1/2 states of 23 Na was measured by optical double-resonance techniques. The states were populated by step-wise excitation using two CW dye lasers. For the dipole interaction constant a, a(6 2 S 1/2 ) = 37.5(2) MHz, a(7 2 S 1/2 )=20.9(1) MHz, a(8 2 S 1/2 )=12.85(10) MHz. were obtained. Theoretical calculations of the hyperfine structure were performed for the 3-8 2 S 1/2 states using many-body perturbation techniques. When polarization as well as certain correlation effects are included in the calculation, an agreement with the experimental values within 2% is obtained.
