  • Lidar system applied in atmospheric pollution monitoring
  • 1979
  • Ingår i: Applied Optics. - 2155-3165. ; 18:17, s. 2998-3003
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A lidar system, incorporating tunable dye lasers and a 25-cm diam Newtonian telescope, has been constructed and applied in atmospheric pollution monitoring. The system, which is fully controlled by a specially designed microcomputer, has been used in several field tests, where stack effluents as well as the ambient air have been monitored. Results from particle, NO2, and SO2 measurements are discussed.

  • Hyperfine-structure study in the P sequence of 23 Na using quantum-beam spectroscopy
  • 1979
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic and Molecular Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0022-3700. ; 12:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Describes use of the quantum-beat method to study hyperfine structure in the 5 2 P 3/2 and 6 2 P 3/2 states of 23 Na. A pulsed dye laser, frequency-doubled into the UV region, was used to excite sodium atoms abruptly in a beam. The fluorescent light was recorded with a fast transient digitiser, interfaced to a micro-computer. Theoretical calculations using many-body perturbation theory were performed for the entire P sequence measured so far, taking polarisation and correlation effects into account separately. Very good agreement between experimental and theoretical values was obtained.

  • Lifetime measurements for excited states of rare-earth atoms using pulse modulation of a cw dye-laser beam
  • 1979
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Optical Society of America. ; 69:7, s. 984-992
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By pulse-modulating a cw dye-laser beam and employing the delayed-coincidence technique, we have determined the natural radiative lifetimes of a number of atomic states in rare-earth atoms Eu, Dy, and Yb. In the measurements, which were performed on an atomic beam, exponential decay curves with good statistics were obtained using short measuring times. The general features of the technique are discussed. When possible, oscillator strengths are deduced and compared with literature values.

  • Determination of natural radiative lifetimes and Lande factors for highly excited F states in cesium
  • 1979
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Physik A Hadrons and Nuclei. - 0939-7922. ; 290:2, s. 127-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Natural radiative lifetimes and LandégJ factors for several highly excitedF states in cesium were measured using time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. TheF states were excited from the 52D5/2 state with a pulse-modulated CW dye laser, and the delayed-coincidence method was employed to record decay curves, which in some experiments exhibited Zeeman quantum beats. A further CW dye laser was used to produce the necessary population in the 52D5/2 state. The lifetimes in the sequence 11–162F7/2 follow anx scaling law withx=2.76 and the Landé factors agree with the predicted value, 1.143.

  • Precision determination of the fine-structure splittings of the 5d and 6d states in potassium
  • 1979
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Physik A Hadrons and Nuclei. - 0939-7922. ; 291:4, s. 303-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fine-structure splittings of the inverted 5 and 62D states of potassium were measured by observing level-crossing signals at high magnetic fields. TheD levels were populated using step-wise excitations, employing two CW tunable dye lasers. For the fine-structure intervals dW we find: dW (5d)= -15,102.0 (5) MHz anddW(6d) = -7,965.8 (6) MHz. These values are about 100 times more accurate than previous results for these states. An expression is given, describing the fine-structure splittings in the sequence of potassium2D states.

  • Atomic Spectroscopy by Resonance Scattering
  • 1979
  • Ingår i: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A, Mathematical and Physical Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 0080-4614 .- 2054-0272. ; 293:1402, s. 215-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resonance scattering techniques are very useful for high-resolution atomic spectroscopy. The applicability of these techniques has been much extended, particularly through the rapid development of tunable-laser technology. The use of a narrowband tunable laser, acting on a collimated atomic beam, gives a direct method enabling, for example, hyperfine structure and isotope shift studies. The intensity of lasers allows stepwise excitations to be performed, and with the two-photon absorption technique, Doppler-free measurements on thermal gases are also possible. By using pulsed lasers, time-resolved measurements yielding radiative life-times and structural information can be performed. The basic resonance scattering methods can be combined with radiofrequency and coherence techniques to yield a resolution, limited only by the uncertainty relation. Optical double resonance and level-crossing techniques, not requiring a narrow-band light source, have been extensively used. Several examples of the application of resonance scattering methods are given.
