  • Antibiotic-killed Staphylococcus aureus induces destructive arthritis in mice.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Arthritis & rheumatology (Hoboken, N.J.). - : Wiley. - 2326-5205 .- 2326-5191. ; 67:1, s. 107-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Permanent reduction in joint function is a severe post-infectious complication in patients with Staphylococcus aureus septic arthritis. This reduction in joint function might be caused by persistent joint inflammation after the adequate eradication of bacteria by antibiotics. Methods: We studied whether antibiotic-killed S. aureus induced joint inflammation in mice and elucidated the molecular and cellular mechanism of this type of arthritis. Results: The intraarticular injection of antibiotic-killed S. aureus induced mild to moderate synovitis and bone erosions that lasted for a minimum of 14 days. The frequency and severity of synovitis were significantly reduced in tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFR1), receptor for Advanced Glycation End Products (RAGE), and toll like receptor 2 (TLR2) knockout mice compared with wild-type animals. The combined depletion of monocytes and neutrophils resulted in a significantly lower frequency of synovitis. Among bacterial factors, insoluble cell debris played a more important role than bacterial DNA or soluble components in inducing joint inflammation. Importantly, anti-TNF therapy abrogated the joint inflammation induced by antibiotic-killed S. aureus. Conclusion: Antibiotic-killed S. aureus induced and maintained the joint inflammation that is mediated through TLR2, TNFR1, and RAGE receptor. The cross-talk between neutrophils and monocytes is responsible for this type of arthritis. Anti-TNF therapy might be used as a novel therapeutic strategy, in combination with antibiotics, to treat staphylococcal septic arthritis. © 2014 American College of Rheumatology.

  • Cross-tier Handover Analyses in Small Cell Networks: A Stochastic Geometry Approach
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Communications. - 1550-3607. - 9781467364324 ; 2015-September, s. 3429-3434
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we make theoretical analysis on cross-tier handover in Small Cell Networks (SCNs). The cross-tier handover is defined as the handover occurred from a macro cell tier to a small cell tier, or vice versa. Based on stochastic geometry, we first propose a linear approximation approach to study the coverage of small cells. Using the proposed method, we then derive analytical expressions for cross-tier handover rate and sojourn time inside a small cell, which are the key parameters in mobility performance evaluation of an SCN. According to the analysis, we show that the small cell coverage area can be well represented by a biased circle, and the expected value of small cell size is inversely proportional to the square root of the BS density in the macro cell tier. Another important observation is that the handover rate and sojourn time change linearly with the reciprocal of small cell radius. These analytical results could provide fundamental supports for improving mobility management in SCNs.

  • Mo2Ga2C: a new ternary nanolaminated carbide
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Chemical Communications. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1359-7345 .- 1364-548X. ; 51:30, s. 6560-6563
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the discovery of a new hexagonal Mo2Ga2C phase, wherein two Ga layers - instead of one - are stacked in a simple hexagonal arrangement in between Mo2C layers. It is reasonable to assume this compound is the first of a larger family.

  • A metric space for Type Ia supernova spectra
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 447:2, s. 1247-1266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop a new framework for use in exploring Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) spectra. Combining principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square (PLS) analysis we are able to establish correlations between the principal components (PCs) and spectroscopic/photometric SNe Ia features. The technique was applied to similar to 120 SN and similar to 800 spectra from the Nearby Supernova Factory. The ability of PCA to group together SNe Ia with similar spectral features, already explored in previous studies, is greatly enhanced by two important modifications: (1) the initial data matrix is built using derivatives of spectra over the wavelength, which increases the weight of weak lines and discards extinction, and (2) we extract time evolution information through the use of entire spectral sequences concatenated in each line of the input data matrix. These allow us to define a stable PC parameter space which can be used to characterize synthetic SN Ia spectra by means of real SN features. Using PLS, we demonstrate that the information from important previously known spectral indicators (namely the pseudo-equivalent width of Si II 5972 angstrom/Si II 6355 angstrom and the line veloci of S II 5640 angstrom/Si II 6355 angstrom) at a given epoch is contained within the PC space and can be determined through a linear combination of the most important PCs. We also show that the PC space encompasses photometric features like B/V magnitudes, B - V colours and SALT2 parameters c and x(1). The observed colours and magnitudes, which are heavily affected by extinction, cannot be reconstructed using this technique alone. All the above-mentioned applications allowed us to construct a metric space for comparing synthetic SN Ia spectra with observations.

  • Isomer effects in fragmentation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Mass Spectrometry. - : Elsevier BV. - 1387-3806 .- 1873-2798. ; 392, s. 58-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have observed significant differences in the fragmentation patterns of isomeric Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) cations following collisions with helium atoms at center-of-mass energies around 100 eV. This is in contrast to the situation at other collision energies or in photo-absorption experiments where isomeric effects are very weak and where the lowest-energy dissociation channels (H- and C2H2-loss) domihate in statistical fragmentation processes. In the 100 eV range, non-statistical fragmentation also competes and is uniquely linked to losses of single carbon atoms (CHx-losses). We find that such CHx-losses are correlated with the ionic ground state energy within a given group of isomers. We present results for three C16H10+, four C18H12+ and five C20H12+ isomers colliding with He.
