  • Study of dimuon production in photon-photon collisions and measurement of QED photon structure functions at LEP
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 19:1, s. 15-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Muon pair production in the process e+e- → e+e- μ+μ- is studied using the data taken at LEP1 (√s ≃ mz) with the DELPHI detector during the years 1992-1995. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 138.5 pb-1. The QED predictions have been tested over the whole Q2 range accessible at LEP1 (from several GeV2/c4 to several hundred GeV2/c4) by comparing experimental distributions with distributions resulting from Monte Carlo simulations using various generators. Selected events are used to extract the leptonic photon structure function Fγ 2. Azimuthal correlations are used to obtain information on additional structure functions, Fγ A and Fγ B, which originate from interference terms of the scattering amplitudes. The measured ratios Fγ A/Fγ 2 and FγB/Fγ 2 are significantly different from zero and consistent with QED predictions.

  • Evaluation of glucose biosensors based on Prussian Blue and lyophilised, crystalline and cross-linked glucose oxidases (CLEC(R)).
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Talanta. - 1873-3573. ; 54:5, s. 963-974
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Glucose biosensors based on lyophilised, crystalline and cross-linked glucose oxidase (GOx, CLEC(R)) and commercially available lyophilised GOx immobilised on top of glassy carbon electrodes modified with electrodeposited Prussian Blue are critically compared. Two procedures were carried out for preparing the biosensors: (1) deposition of one layer of adsorbed GOx dissolved in an aqueous solution followed by deposition of two layers of low molecular weight Nafion(R) dissolved in 90% ethanol, and (2) deposition of two layers of a mixture of GOx with Nafion dissolved in 90% ethanol. The performance of the biosensors was evaluated in terms of linear response range for hydrogen peroxide and glucose, detection limit, and susceptibility to some common interfering species (ascorbic acid, acetaminophen and uric acid). The operational stability of the biosensors was evaluated by applying a steady potential of -50 mV versus Ag/AgCl to the glucose biosensor and injecting standard solutions of hydrogen peroxide and glucose (50 muM and 1.0 mM, respectively, in phosphate buffer) for at least 5 h in a flow-injection system. Scanning electron microscopy was used for visualisation of the Prussian Blue redox catalyst and in the presence of the different GOx preparations on the electrode surface.

  • Deriving the angular variation of p(parallel to)-distributions for halo neutrons with robust statistics
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 679:3-4, s. 215-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The longitudinal neutron momentum distribution from core breakup of Li-11 and Be-11 have been measured at 29.9 MeV/u and 38.5 MeV/u, respectively. Separate measurements on Li-9 and Be-10 allowed extraction of the halo neutron distribution. The shapes of the distributions are analyzed using robust and descriptive statistics, For both isotopes the shape is changing with angle. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Analysis of decay data from neutron-rich nuclei
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - 1434-601X .- 1434-6001. ; 11:3, s. 279-284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The beta -decays of the neutron-rich nuclei Be-12 and Ne-29 have been studied. The statistical correlations between the almost identical half-lives of Be-12 and its daughter B-12 are analysed for a large sample of Be-12 decay data. Stringent mutual bounds are obtained on the parameter set, leading to a precise determination of the Be-12 half-life of 21.50 +/- 0.04 ms. From a simultaneous detection of beta -particles and neutrons from the decay of Ne-29 the neutron emission probability, P-n, is determined to 17 +/- 5%. No indication of two-neutron emission is seen from this nucleus. An upper limit of 2.2% (90% confidence level) is established for P-2n.

  • On the beta-decay of C-9
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 692:3-4, s. 427-450
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In beta -decay experiments on C-9 at CERN/ISOLDE the beta -strength was determined to the ground state, the 12.2 MeV excited state and the Isobaric Analog State (IAS) at 14.655 MeV in B-9. A large beta -strength asymmetry is deduced for the mirror transitions of C-9 and Li-9 to states around 12 MeV excitation energy. A satisfactory description of the three-body decay from a narrow energy region around the 12.2 MeV resonance is obtained within a sequential model involving the ground and first-excited states of Li-5 and Be-8. From the study of angular correlations the spin of the 12.2 MeV state is determined as 5/2(-). For the first time the population of the IAS is observed in beta -decay and new information on the decay of this state is obtained. The advantages of a closely packed. highly segmented detector setup are demonstrated. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • The molecular mechanism for the genetic disorder familial defective apolipoprotein B100
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - 1083-351X. ; 276:12, s. 9214-9218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Familial defective apolipoprotein B100 (FDB) is a genetic disorder in which low density lipoproteins (LDL) bind defectively to the LDL receptor, resulting in hypercholesterolemia and premature atherosclerosis. FDB is caused by a mutation (R3500Q) that changes the conformation of apolipoprotein (apo) B100 near the receptor-binding site. We previously showed that arginine, not simply a positive charge, at residue 3500 is essential for normal receptor binding and that the carboxyl terminus of apoB100 is necessary for mutations affecting arginine 3500 to disrupt LDL receptor binding. Thus, normal receptor binding involves an interaction between arginine 3500 and tryptophan 4369 in the carboxyl tail of apoB100. W4369Y LDL and R3500Q LDL isolated from transgenic mice had identically defective LDL binding and a higher affinity for the monoclonal antibody MB47, which has an epitope flanking residue 3500. We conclude that arginine 3500 interacts with tryptophan 4369 and facilitates the conformation of apoB100 required for normal receptor binding of LDL. From our findings, we developed a model that explains how the carboxyl terminus of apoB100 interacts with the backbone of apoB100 that enwraps the LDL particle. Our model also explains how all known ligand-defective mutations in apoB100, including a newly discovered R3480W mutation in apoB100, cause defective receptor binding.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - 0023-7205. ; 98:32-33, s. 3392-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In acute ST-elevation infarction two different reperfusion strategies--thrombolytic medication and acute coronary angiography--have proved to improve the prognosis. The clinical course for patients with ST-elevation infarction is described in relation to whether they received thrombolytic medication or underwent acute coronary angiography with the aim of mechanical revascularization. The one-year mortality was high (20 percent) regardless of treatment strategy. In terms of morbidity there were no clear differences between the two treatment groups.

  • A high-rate manganese oxide for rechargeable lithium battery applications
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Electrochemical Society. - : Electrochemical Society Inc. - 0013-4651 .- 1945-7111. ; 148:3, s. A230-A236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • LixMnO2 made by ion exchange of glycine-nitrate combustion synthesis-processed (GNP) orthorhombic Na0.44MnO2 (GNP-LixMnO2) has been cycled in lithium/liquid electrolyte cell configurations at room temperature and lithium/polymer cell configurations at 85 degreesC over one hundred times without showing capacity fading or phase conversion to spinel. At 2.5 mA/cm2 in liquid cells (5C rate) or 1 mA/cm2 (1.5C rate) in polymer cells, 80-95% of the expected capacity is delivered. The remarkable stability is attributable to the unusual double tunnel structure, which cannot easily undergo rearrangement to spinel. The enhanced rate capability of GNP-LixMnO2 compared to conventionally prepared materials is attributable to the shorter particle length, which allows faster diffusion of lithium ions along the tunnels.
