  • The relationship between alcohol use and dementia in adults aged more than 60 years: a combined analysis of prospective, individual-participant data from 15 international studies
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Addiction. - : Wiley. - 0965-2140 .- 1360-0443. ; 118:3, s. 412-424
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To synthesize international findings on the alcohol–dementia relationship, including representation from low- and middle-income countries. Methods: Individual participant data meta-analysis of 15 prospective epidemiological cohort studies from countries situated in six continents. Cox regression investigated the dementia risk associated with alcohol use in older adults aged over 60 years. Additional analyses assessed the alcohol–dementia relationship in the sample stratified by sex and by continent. Participants included 24 478 community dwelling individuals without a history of dementia at baseline and at least one follow-up dementia assessment. The main outcome measure was all-cause dementia as determined by clinical interview. Results: At baseline, the mean age across studies was 71.8 (standard deviation = 7.5, range = 60–102 years), 14 260 (58.3%) were female and 13 269 (54.2%) were current drinkers. During 151 636 person-years of follow-up, there were 2124 incident cases of dementia (14.0 per 1000 person-years). When compared with abstainers, the risk for dementia was lower in occasional [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.78; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.68–0.89], light–moderate (HR = 0.78; 95% CI = 0.70–0.87) and moderate–heavy drinkers (HR = 0.62; 95% CI = 0.51–0.77). There was no evidence of differences between life-time abstainers and former drinkers in terms of dementia risk (HR = 0.98; 95% CI = 0.81–1.18). In dose–response analyses, moderate drinking up to 40 g/day was associated with a lower risk of dementia when compared with lif-time abstaining. Among current drinkers, there was no consistent evidence for differences in terms of dementia risk. Results were similar when the sample was stratified by sex. When analysed at the continent level, there was considerable heterogeneity in the alcohol–dementia relationship. Conclusions: Abstinence from alcohol appears to be associated with an increased risk for all-cause dementia. Among current drinkers, there appears to be no consistent evidence to suggest that the amount of alcohol consumed in later life is associated with dementia risk. © 2022 The Authors. • Home as a pocket of local order : Everyday activities and the friction of distance
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler. Series B, Human Geography. - 0435-3684 .- 1468-0467. ; 86:4, s. 281-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Discourse on the information society currently highlights issues of networks, flows and mobilities as prime organisers and re-organisers of time-space relationships. Such discourse promotes notions of the flexible use of time and space, of people's decoupling from place and even of the end of geography - the belief that distance does not matter. Yet, in this article we argue that the roles of geographical stationarity and proximity in everyday life - understood as the creation and maintaining of pockets of local order - indicate the continuing and often neglected importance of the friction of distance. We demonstrate this empirically by focusing on the home as a pocket of local order, investigating the intensity and spatial extension of people's everyday activities, projects and contacts - their corporeal, virtual and medial (media-related) mobilities - with the world outside. We support our thesis with data from the population, household and individual levels.

  • Läsarna som brände böcker : Erik Jansson och erikjansarna i 1840-talets Sverige
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The theological characteristics were the demand for sinlessness and perfection and Jansson’s theory of decay, in which post-biblical theological thought was rejected. Jansson claimed to be enlightened by the Holy Spirit and sent to reveal the true biblical faith. In 1844 his followers publicly burnt devotional books and official books of the Church and State. This sharpened the conflict and prepared for the schism. The revival around Jansson threatened traditional structures. Countermeasures were at first uncoordinated, which the Erikjansonists exploited, but as the social control increased the Erikjansonist leaders decided that the group should emigrate. The emigration was called an exodus and considered necessary for salvation. The Erikjansonists ascribed the Bishop Hill-colony an eschatological significance as the New Jerusalem. The Erikjansonist group was organised as one household in which spiritual and economic leadership was unified. Jansson acted as the head of the household with unlimited power over his followers. The theoretical framework of this study is a model of schism and terms to explain the transition from loyalty to exit. The Erikjansonists arose in a transitional period. Swedish society was changing from relative homogeneousness to greater diversity, individualism and structural pluralism. The group reacted against these modern trends that at the same time were a precondition for its development. This thesis examines the Erikjansonists, an anti-nomistic, anti-Lutheran revivalist movement of pietistic origin, in Sweden during the 1840’s. Grown from contacts between lay readers in Hälsingland and Erik Jansson from Uppland it took the form of a household revival.

  • Ground-Based Optical Measurements at European Flux Sites: A Review of Methods, Instruments and Current Controversies
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI AG. - 1424-8220. ; 11:8, s. 7954-7981
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reviews the currently available optical sensors, their limitations and opportunities for deployment at Eddy Covariance (EC) sites in Europe. This review is based on the results obtained from an online survey designed and disseminated by the Co-cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action ESO903-"Spectral Sampling Tools for Vegetation Biophysical Parameters and Flux Measurements in Europe" that provided a complete view on spectral sampling activities carried out within the different research teams in European countries. The results have highlighted that a wide variety of optical sensors are in use at flux sites across Europe, and responses further demonstrated that users were not always fully aware of the key issues underpinning repeatability and the reproducibility of their spectral measurements. The key findings of this survey point towards the need for greater awareness of the need for standardisation and development of a common protocol of optical sampling at the European EC sites.

  • Does the Internet encourage people to move? Investigating Swedish young adults’ internal migration experiences and plans
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Geoforum. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-7185 .- 1872-9398. ; 47:June, s. 209-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Internet offers personalized and constantly updated information about opportunities and facilities at places far away. It stimulates distant personal contact and interaction via social media. Attention is thus increasingly being paid to the relationships between Internet use and traditional, physical forms of spatial interaction and movement. This paper explores possible associations between Internet use and internal migration, based on a 2009 survey of 750 young adults in Sweden. We explore Internet-based information seeking practices associated with actual migration experiences and with current plans to move to another place. Results indicate that many recent movers believed that the Internet influenced and facilitated their decision to move, and somewhat influenced their choice of destination. Many have also developed Internet-based communication practices that involve plans to migrate in the near future. Results suggest that the Internet reinforces intentions to move for a sizeable group, and also affects their migration motives.
