  • Engineering for the ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) end-cap
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221 .- 1748-0221. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) is a silicon-strip tracking detector which forms part of the ATLAS inner detector. The SCT is designed to track charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN at an energy of 14 TeV. The tracker is made up of a central barrel and two identical end-caps. The barrel contains 2112 silicon modules, while each end-cap contains 988 modules. The overall tracking performance depends not only on the intrinsic measurement precision of the modules but also on the characteristics of the whole assembly, in particular, the stability and the total material budget. This paper describes the engineering design and construction of the SCT end-caps, which are required to support mechanically the silicon modules, supply services to them and provide a suitable environment within the inner detector. Critical engineering choices are highlighted and innovative solutions are presented - these will be of interest to other builders of large-scale tracking detectors. The SCT end-caps will be fully connected at the start of 2008. Further commissioning will continue, to be ready for proton-proton collision data in 2008.

  • The ATLAS semiconductor tracker end-cap module
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 575:3, s. 353-389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The challenges for the tracking detector systems at the LHC are unprecedented in terms of the number of channels, the required read-out speed and the expected radiation levels. The ATLAS Semiconductor Tracker. (SCT) end-caps have a total of about 3 million electronics channels each reading out every 25 ns into its own on-chip 3.3 mu s buffer. The highest anticipated dose after 10 years operation is 1.4x10(14) cm(-2) in units of 1 MeV neutron equivalent (assuming the damage factors scale with the non-ionising energy loss). The forward tracker has 1976 double-sided modules, mostly of area similar to 70 cm(2), each having 2 x 768 strips read out by six ASICs per side. The requirement to achieve an average perpendicular radiation length of 1.5% X-0, while coping with up to 7 W dissipation per module (after irradiation), leads to stringent constraints on the thermal design. The additional requirement of 1500e(-) equivalent noise charge (ENC) rising to only 1800e(-) ENC after irradiation, provides stringent design constraints on both the high-density Cu/Polyimide flex read-out circuit and the ABCD3TA read-out ASICs. Finally, the accuracy of module assembly must not compromise the 16 mu m (r phi) resolution perpendicular to the strip directions or 580 mu m radial resolution coming from the 40 mrad front-back stereo angle. A total of 2210 modules were built to the tight tolerances and specifications required for the SCT. This was 234 more than the 1976 required and represents a yield of 93%. The component flow was at times tight, but the module production rate of 40-50 per week was maintained despite this. The distributed production was not found to be a major logistical problem and it allowed additional flexibility to take advantage of where the effort was available, including any spare capacity, for building the end-cap modules. The collaboration that produced the ATLAS SCT end-cap modules kept in close contact at all times so that the effects of shortages or stoppages at different sites could be rapidly resolved.

  • The Genome Sequence of Taurine Cattle : A Window to Ruminant Biology and Evolution
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 324:5926, s. 522-528
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To understand the biology and evolution of ruminants, the cattle genome was sequenced to about sevenfold coverage. The cattle genome contains a minimum of 22,000 genes, with a core set of 14,345 orthologs shared among seven mammalian species of which 1217 are absent or undetected in noneutherian (marsupial or monotreme) genomes. Cattle-specific evolutionary breakpoint regions in chromosomes have a higher density of segmental duplications, enrichment of repetitive elements, and species-specific variations in genes associated with lactation and immune responsiveness. Genes involved in metabolism are generally highly conserved, although five metabolic genes are deleted or extensively diverged from their human orthologs. The cattle genome sequence thus provides a resource for understanding mammalian evolution and accelerating livestock genetic improvement for milk and meat production.

  • The optical links of the ATLAS SemiConductor tracker
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221 .- 1748-0221. ; 2, s. 1-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical links are used for the readout of the 4088 silicon microstrip modules that make up the SemiConductor Tracker of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The optical link requirements are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the very demanding environment at the LHC. The on-detector components have to operate in high radiation levels for 10 years, with no maintenance, and there are very strict requirements on power consumption, material and space. A novel concept for the packaging of the on-detector optoelectronics has been developed to meet these requirements. The system architecture, including its redundancy features, is explained and the critical on-detector components are described. The results of the extensive Quality Assurance performed during all steps of the assembly are discussed.

  • SOCS2 negatively regulates growth hormone action in vitro and in vivo.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: The Journal of clinical investigation. - 0021-9738. ; 115:2, s. 397-406
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mice deficient in SOCS2 display an excessive growth phenotype characterized by a 30-50% increase in mature body size. Here we show that the SOCS2-/- phenotype is dependent upon the presence of endogenous growth hormone (GH) and that treatment with exogenous GH induced excessive growth in mice lacking both endogenous GH and SOCS2. This was reflected in terms of overall body weight, body and bone lengths, and the weight of internal organs and tissues. A heightened response to GH was also measured by examining GH-responsive genes expressed in the liver after exogenous GH administration. To further understand the link between SOCS2 and the GH-signaling cascade, we investigated the nature of these interactions using structure/function and biochemical interaction studies. Analysis of the 3 structural motifs of the SOCS2 molecule revealed that each plays a crucial role in SOCS2 function, with the conserved SOCS-box motif being essential for all inhibitory function. SOCS2 was found to bind 2 phosphorylated tyrosines on the GH receptor, and mutational analysis of these amino acids showed that both were essential for SOCS2 function. Together, the data provide clear evidence that SOCS2 is a negative regulator of GH signaling.

  • High frequency QRS electrocardiogram analysis during exercise stress testing for detecting ischemia
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cardiology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5273. ; 124:2, s. 198-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction ECG stress testing is an inexpensive and non-invasive detector of myocardial ischemia; addition of high-frequency QRS analysis (HFQRS) may improve accuracy. This study compared HFQRS during exercise in patients with and without ischemia as defined by multiple criteria. Material and methods High-resolution ECGs were recorded for 139 patients undergoing T99-sestamibi/T201-thallium stress testing. Twenty-three were positive by at least two and 37 were negative for ischemia by all three of the following criteria: nuclear scan, ST-segment analysis and typical angina. Sixty-four not meeting criteria for positive or negative, six with adenosine test and nine patients with ECG recording artifacts were excluded. Mean age of the study group was 62 ± 10 years, 83% were male. Ischemic patients had a higher incidence of previous myocardial infarction and coronary intervention than non-ischemic patients (74% vs. 46%; P = 0.03 and 70% vs. 43%; P = 0.05, respectively), but had a lower body mass index (28.7 ± 5 vs. 33.0 ± 8; P = 0.015). HFQRS analysis consisting of signal averaging (150–250 Hz) and calculation of root mean squared values for each lead at different time points was performed and was similar between the groups. The relative change in HFQRS (RCQ) was calculated for each lead: {(maxHFQRS − minHFQRS) / maxHFQRS}. For each patient an RCQ index was calculated by averaging the two leads with the greatest RCQ value. The RCQ index was greater in ischemic vs. non-ischemic patients (45% vs. 34%; P = 0.0069). Conclusion Maximum decrease in HFQRS, as quantified by RCQ index, was greater in ischemic vs. non-ischemic patients. Use of the RCQ index may improve the diagnosis of ischemia during exercise stress testing.

  • The contiguity of carbide crystals of different shapes in cemented carbides
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International journal of refractory metals & hard materials. - : Elsevier. - 0263-4368. ; 24:1-2, s. 61-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Equilibrium and geometry models for the contiguity of carbide crystals in cemented carbides are discussed. The equilibrium approach is applicable to rounded carbide crystals with a sufficient amount of the binder phase. Increase of the angularity of carbide crystals and/or decrease of the binder content lead to the geometrical constituent of the contiguity to be taken into account. In both cases, the energy advantage of the carbide–carbide contact over replaced carbide–binder interfaces determines the existence of the contact. An effect of the shape equiaxiality on the contiguity of WC crystals is observed in WC–Ni cemented carbides with small additions of TiC and explained by a model combining geometry and energy advantage of the contacts. The basal-to-basal, prismatic-to-prismatic, and prismatic-to-basal WC/WC contacts and their contribution to the decrease of the total contiguity are considered and evaluated separately in regard to the decrease of the shape equiaxiality of WC crystals.
