  • Multi-length scale modeling of martensitic transformations in stainless steels

    • In the present work a multi-length scale model is developed to study both the athermal and stress-assisted martensitic transformations in a single crystal of 301 type stainless steel. The microstructure evolution is simulated using elastoplastic phase-field simulations in three dimensions. The input data for the simulations is acquired from a combination of computational techniques and experimental works. The driving force for the transformation is calculated by using the CALPHAD technique and the elastic constants of the body-centered cubic phase are calculated by using ab initio method. The other input data is acquired from experimental works. The simulated microstructures resemble a lath-type martensitic microstructure, which is in good agreement with the experimental results obtained for a stainless steel of similar composition. The martensite habit plane predicted by the model is in accordance with experimental results. The Magee effect, i.e. formation of favorable martensite variants depending on the loading conditions, is observed in the simulations. The results also indicate that anisotropic loading conditions give rise to a significant anisotropy in the martensitic microstructure.

  • javaPlex : A Research Software Package for Persistent (Co) Homology

    • The computation of persistent homology has proven a fundamental component of the nascent field of topological data analysis and computational topology. We describe a new software package for topological computation, with design focus on needs of the research community. This tool, replacing previous jPlex and Plex, enables researchers to access state of the art algorithms for persistent homology, cohomology, hom complexes, filtered simplicial complexes, filtered cell complexes, witness complex constructions, and many more essential components of computational topology. We describe, herewithin, the design goals we have chosen, as well as the resulting software package, and some of its more novel capabilities.

    • We present a recalibration of the photometric systems in the Pantheon+ sample of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) including those in the SH0ES distance-ladder measurement of H0. We utilize the large and uniform sky coverage of the public Pan-STARRS stellar photometry catalog to cross calibrate against tertiary standards released by individual SN Ia surveys. The most significant updates over the “SuperCal” cross calibration used for the previous Pantheon and SH0ES analyses are: (1) expansion of the number of photometric systems (now 25) and filters (now 105), (2) solving for all filter offsets in all systems simultaneously to produce a calibration uncertainty covariance matrix for cosmological-model constraints, and (3) accounting for the change in the fundamental flux calibration of the Hubble Space Telescope CALSPEC standards from previous versions on the order of 1.5% over a Δλ of 4000 Å. We retrain the SALT2 model and find that our new model coupled with the new calibration of the light curves themselves causes a net distance modulus change (dμ/dz) of 0.04 mag over the redshift range 0 < z < 1. We introduce a new formalism to determine the systematic impact on cosmological inference by propagating the covariance in the fitted calibration offsets through retraining simultaneously with light-curve fitting and find a total calibration uncertainty impact of σw = 0.013; roughly half the size of the sample statistical uncertainty. Similarly, we find the systematic SN calibration contribution to the SH0ES H0 uncertainty is less than 0.2 km s−1 Mpc−1, suggesting that SN Ia calibration cannot resolve the current level of the “Hubble Tension.”

    • Clients of consultancy services are expected to be able to incorporate the output of collaborative efforts (the weave of experiences, knowledge and potential of consumers, stakeholders, and experts) into their professional activities. The goal of consultancy work, therefore, is to impart to others the ability to act in new ways with once foreign material. This is inherently a learning process that implies identity change (Lave & Wenger 1991; Brown & Duguid 1991). Coming from outside of an organization, the question remains: How can consultants provide services to an organization in a way that sets them up for success? In this paper we explore a shift in practice from a “delivery mode” of working from outside of a company, to organizing project environments and activities in a “collaborative mode” of working with company stakeholders, consumers, and other expertise. Through a recent project example we highlight how the shift challenges stakeholders to make sense of working with unfinished material in order to appreciate their own role in the process, whilst at the same time challenge the consults to renegotiate the way they use their skills and how they deliver value.

    • Objective: During pregnancy and childbirth, vulnerable and disadvantaged women have poorer outcomes, have less opportunities,face barriers in accessing care,and are at a greater risk of experiencing a traumatic birth. A recent synthesis of women's negative experiences of maternity care gathered data from predominantly low-income countries. However, these studies did not focus on vulnerable groups, and are not easily transferable into high-income settings due to differences in maternity care provision. The aim of this study was to synthesise existing qualitative literature focused on disadvantaged and vulnerable women's experience of maternity care in high-income countries. Methods: A systematic literature search and meta-ethnographic methods were used. Search methods included searches on four databases, author run, and backward and forward chaining. Searches were conducted in March 2016 and updated in May 2020. Findings: A total of 13,330 articles were identified and following checks against inclusion / exclusion criteria and quality appraisal 20 studies were included. Meta-ethnographic translation analytical methods were used to identify reciprocal and refutational findings, and to undertake a line of argument synthesis. Three third order reciprocal constructs were identified, ‘Prejudiced and deindividualized care’, ‘Interpersonal relationships and interactions’ and ‘Creating and enhancing insecurities.’ A line of argument synthesis entitled ‘I know my place’ encapsulates the experiences of disadvantaged and vulnerable women across the studies, acknowledging differential care practices, stigma and judgmental attitudes. A refutational translation was conceptualised as ‘Being seen, being heard’ acknowledging positive aspects of maternity care reported by women. Conclusion: Insights highlight how women's vulnerability was compounded by complex life factors, judgmental and stigmatizing attitudes by health professionals, and differential care provision. Further research is needed to identify suitable care pathways for disadvantaged and vulnerable women and the development of suitable training to highlight negative attitudes towards these women in maternity care settings. © 2021

    • Next-generation sequencing studies on diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs) have revealed novel targets of genetic aberrations but also high intercohort heterogeneity. Previous studies have suggested that the prevalence of disease subgroups and cytogenetic profiles differ between Western and Asian patients. To characterize the coding genome of Chinese DLBCL, we performed whole-exome sequencing of DNA derived from 31 tumors and respective peripheral blood samples. The mutation prevalence of B2M, CD70, DTX1, LYN, TMSB4X, and UBE2A was investigated in an additional 105 tumor samples. We discovered 11 novel targets of recurrent mutations in DLBCL that included functionally relevant genes such as LYN and TMSB4X. Additional genes were found mutated at high frequency (>= 10%) in the Chinese cohort including DTX1, which was the most prevalent mutation target in the Notch pathway. We furthermore demonstrated that mutations in DTX1 impair its function as a negative regulator of Notch. Novel and previous unappreciated targets of somatic mutations in DLBCL identified in this study support the existence of additional/alternative tumorigenic pathways in these tumors. The observed differences with previous reports might be explained by the genetic heterogeneity of DLBCL, the germline genetic makeup of Chinese individuals, and/or exposure to distinct etiological agents.
