  • Impurity impacts on the purification process in oxy-fuel combustion based CO2 capture and storage system

    • Based on the requirements of CO2 transportation and storage, non-condensable gases, such as O-2, N-2 and At should be removed from the CO2-stream captured from an oxy-fuel combustion process. For a purification process, impurities have great impacts on the design, operation and optimization through their impacts on the thermodynamic properties of CO2-streams. Study results show that the increments of impurities will make the energy consumption of purification increase: and make CO2 purity of separation product and CO2 recovery rate decrease, In addition, under the same operating conditions, energy consumptions have different sensitivities to the variation of the impurity mole fraction of feed fluids. The isothermal compression work is more sensitive to the variation of SO2: while the isentropic compression work is more sensitive to the variation of Ar. In the flash system, the energy consumption of condensation in is more sensitive to the variation of Ar; but in the distillation system, the energy consumption of condensation is more sensitive to the variation of SO2, and CO2 purity of separation is more sensitive to the variation of SO2.

  • Fibre length effect on fibre suspension flocculation and sheet formation

    • Fibre suspension flocculation was studied in a flow loop system, simulating the flow conditions in a modern paper machine headbox. The fibre suspensions after the headbox were accelerated by a secondary contraction, mimicking flow accelerations that may take place during forming. Fibre suspensions were studied using an optical detection method. Images were taken by a high speed video camera with transmitted infrared laser light pulse illumination separately before and after the secondary contraction. The mean fibre floc size was evaluated by power spectrum analysis in MID and CID respectively. A series of twelve pulp samples, four different commercial bleached softwood kraft pulps refined to three different levels, were used in the experiments. The fibre physical properties and formation number for paper sheets produced on a pilot paper machine with these pulp samples were characterised. Refining shortened the fibre length, thus decreased the fibre floc size in flowing suspensions and improved the formation in paper sheets. A series of mixtures at different ratios of bleached softwood and hardwood kraft pulps were also used in the experiments. The fibre physical properties of the mixtures were also characterised. The fibre length increases when increasing the ratio of softwood pulp in the mixture, thus fibre floc size in the suspension increases.

    • A generalized Mueller matrix method (GMMM) is proposed to measure the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in an optical fiber system with polarization-dependent loss or gain (PDL/G). This algorithm is based on the polar decomposition of a 4×4 matrix which corresponds to a Lorentz transformation. Compared to the generalized Poincaré sphere method, the GMMM can measure PMD accurately with a relatively larger frequency step, and the obtained PMD data has very low noise level.

  • Quasi-monochromatic fiber depolarizer and its application to polarization-dependent loss measurement

    • We theoretically derive the relationship between the degrees of polarization (DOPs) of input and output for an optical component with polarization-dependent loss (PDL) and birefringence. Based on the theoretical result, we propose a novel depolarizer for quasi-monochromatic light that can depolarize a fully polarized light with a 50 MHz50 MHz linewidth to less than 0.2% in the DOP. The depolarized light is then used to measure PDL in a single-mode optical fiber link. To the best of our knowledge, our new PDL measurement method is significantly faster than all known methods. Experimental results show excellent agreement with other methods.

  • Humidified gas turbines - a review of proposed and implemented cycles

    • Gas turbines with air-water mixtures as the working fluid promise high electrical efficiencies and high specific power outputs to specific investment costs below that of combined cycles. Different humidified gas turbine cycles have been proposed, for example direct water-injected cycles, steam-injected cycles and evaporative cycles with humidification towers. However, only a few of these cycles have been implemented and even fewer are available commercially. This paper comprehensively reviews the literature on research and development on humidified gas turbines and identifies the cycles with the largest potential for the future. In addition, the remaining development work required for implementing the various humidified gas turbine cycles is discussed. This paper can also be used as a reference source that summarizes the research and development activities on humidified gas turbines in the last three decades.

    • In chemical looping combustion (CLC), a solid oxygen carrier circulates between two fluidised bed reactors and transports oxygen from the combustion air to the fuel: thus, the fuel is not mixed with air and an inherent CO2 separation occurs. In this paper, CLC is integrated in a natural gas fired combined cycle (NGCC). In this system, nickel- and iron-based oxygen carriers are compared regarding the system's electrical and exergy efficiencies. Furthermore, the feasibility of CLC in two interconnected pressurised fluidised bed reactors (IPFBR) is studied for both oxygen carriers. The hypothetical layout plus dimensions of the IPFBR is presented for a capacity of 800 MW input of natural gas. Finally, top-firing is proposed as an option to overcome the apparent limitation in operating temperature of the reactor equipment and/or the oxygen carriers. The results indicate that there is no significant difference in the system's efficiency if both oxygen carriers could operate at the same temperature. However, CLC seems easier to be technically realised in an IPFBR with a nickel-based oxygen carrier.
