  • The SHiP experiment at the proposed CERN SPS Beam Dump Facility
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Nature. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 82:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has proposed a general-purpose experimental facility operating in beam-dump mode at the CERN SPS accelerator to search for light, feebly interacting particles. In the baseline configuration, the SHiP experiment incorporates two complementary detectors. The upstream detector is designed for recoil signatures of light dark matter (LDM) scattering and for neutrino physics, in particular with tau neutrinos. It consists of a spectrometer magnet housing a layered detector system with high-density LDM/neutrino target plates, emulsion-film technology and electronic high-precision tracking. The total detector target mass amounts to about eight tonnes. The downstream detector system aims at measuring visible decays of feebly interacting particles to both fully reconstructed final states and to partially reconstructed final states with neutrinos, in a nearly background-free environment. The detector consists of a 50m\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\mathrm { \,m}$$\end{document} long decay volume under vacuum followed by a spectrometer and particle identification system with a rectangular acceptance of 5 m in width and 10 m in height. Using the high-intensity beam of 400GeV\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\,\mathrm {GeV}$$\end{document} protons, the experiment aims at profiting from the 4x1019\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$4\times 10<^>{19}$$\end{document} protons per year that are currently unexploited at the SPS, over a period of 5-10 years. This allows probing dark photons, dark scalars and pseudo-scalars, and heavy neutral leptons with GeV-scale masses in the direct searches at sensitivities that largely exceed those of existing and projected experiments. The sensitivity to light dark matter through scattering reaches well below the dark matter relic density limits in the range from a few MeV/c2\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\mathrm {\,MeV\!/}c<^>2}$$\end{document} up to 100 MeV-scale masses, and it will be possible to study tau neutrino interactions with unprecedented statistics. This paper describes the SHiP experiment baseline setup and the detector systems, together with performance results from prototypes in test beams, as it was prepared for the 2020 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics. The expected detector performance from simulation is summarised at the end.

  • Track reconstruction and matching between emulsion and silicon pixel detectors for the SHiP-charm experiment
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP Publishing. - 1748-0221 .- 1748-0221. ; 17:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In July 2018 an optimization run for the proposed charm cross section measurement for SHiP was performed at the CERN SPS. A heavy, moving target instrumented with nuclear emulsion films followed by a silicon pixel tracker was installed in front of the Goliath magnet at the H4 proton beam-line. Behind the magnet, scintillating-fibre, drift-tube and RPC detectors were placed. The purpose of this run was to validate the measurement's feasibility, to develop the required analysis tools and fine-tune the detector layout. In this paper, we present the track reconstruction in the pixel tracker and the track matching with the moving emulsion detector. The pixel detector performed as expected and it is shown that, after proper alignment, a vertex matching rate of 87% is achieved.

  • Heuristics Based Optimization for Multidepot Drone Location and Routing Problem to Detect Post-Earthquake Damages
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on intelligent transportation systems (Print). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 1524-9050 .- 1558-0016. ; , s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this research is to detect the post-disaster damage by drones as soon as possible so that decision makers can assign search and rescue teams effectively and efficiently. The main differences of this research from the others, which use drones in literature, are as: First, the regions are divided into grids and different importance values are assigned according to the number of buildings that are likely to be damaged and are vital for the response stage, such as hospitals, schools, and fire stations. Second, these importance levels are updated based on the day and time, which helps ordering the grids in a more realistic manner. Third, the depots are selected among the pre-determined candidate locations in accordance with the purpose of objective function. Fourth, detection times at grids are considered as uncertain. Fifth, two versions of Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) are developed as alternatives to exact solution tools. Last, sensitivity analyzes are performed by reducing the number of sorties, reducing the number of drones, and comparing day and night importance values for each instance. According to the results, only for very small-scale instances, exact solution tool was able to reach the optimal while both versions of ACO reached to similar results within a very less CPU times. Additionally, these ACO algorithms also found good results for the larger scaled problems. Then the performance of these ACO algorithms and the exact solution method are compared based on the CPU time and solution quality. IEEE

  • Production of AB 5 materials from spent Ni-MH batteries with further tests of hydrogen storage suitability
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Power Sources. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-7753 .- 1873-2755. ; 539
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel approach for the reuse of rare earth (REE) elements generated during hydrometallurgical processing of Ni-MH batteries as alternative sources is provided to valorize Ni-MH batteries wastes. The production of AB5-based alloys from spent Ni-MH waste was thoroughly investigated. The REE elements were recovered as a mixture in oxalate form and annealed at 900 °C to obtain a single-phase REEs oxide REE2O3. Citrate gel and glycine nitrate processes followed by the Ca reduction process under H2 atmosphere were used to produce the AB5 alloys. The alloys were successfully produced, and their crystal structure and morphology have been studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with supporting energy-dispersive X-ray (EDS) analysis. Nanoparticles with a size of 173±3 nm and 150±8 nm were observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for CG and GNP alloys. Studied samples were subjected to hydrogenation, and the structural changes were depicted.

  • Comorbidity between types of eating disorder and general medical conditions
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The British journal of psychiatry : the journal of mental science. - : Royal College of Psychiatrists. - 1472-1465. ; 220:5, s. 279-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Comorbidity with general medical conditions is common in individuals with eating disorders. Many previous studies do not evaluate types of eating disorder.AimsTo provide relative and absolute risks of bidirectional associations between (a) anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and eating disorders not otherwise specified and (b) 12 general medical conditions.MethodWe included all people born in Denmark between 1977 and 2010. We collected information on eating disorders and considered the risk of subsequent medical conditions, using Cox proportional hazards regression. Absolute risks were calculated using competing risks survival analyses. We also considered risks for prior medical conditions and subsequent eating disorders.ResultsAn increased risk was seen for almost all disorder pairs (69 of 70). Hazard ratios for those with a prior eating disorder receiving a subsequent diagnosis of a medical condition ranged from 0.94 (95% CI 0.57−1.55) to 2.05 (95% CI 1.86−2.27). For those with a prior medical condition, hazard ratios for later eating disorders ranged from 1.35 (95% CI 1.26–1.45) to 1.98 (95% CI 1.71–2.28). Absolute risks for most later disorders were increased for persons with prior disorders, compared with reference groups.ConclusionsThis is the largest and most detailed examination of eating disorder–medical condition comorbidity. The findings indicate that medical condition comorbidity is increased among those with eating disorders andvice versa. Although there was some variation in comorbidity observed across eating disorder types, magnitudes of relative risks did not differ greatly.

  • Sorting of Breast Cancer Cell into Different Subpopulations towards Long-Term Observation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: MicroTAS 2022 - 26th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences. - 9781733419048 ; , s. 322-323
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To study how mechanical factors influence the spread of cancer and the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM), it is crucial that cancer cell populations be sorted without labels in relevant subpopulations with respect to mechanical properties. It is also important to confine subpopulations for long-term observation to track changes, in inherent properties of the subpopulations, and on the influence of the sorting. We have used Deterministic Lateral Displacement (DLD) for label-free continuous sorting of breast cancer cells into three different subpopulations. These were subsequently cultured for further analyses of their differences and to observe any alterations due to the sorting.
