  • Trends in the prevalence of cognitive impairment at old age in China, 2002–2018

    • INTRODUCTION: China has the world's largest number of older adults with cognitive impairment (CI). We aimed to examine secular trends in the prevalence of CI in China from 2002 to 2018.METHODS: Generalized estimating equations (GEE) was used to assess changes in CI trend in 44,154 individuals (72,027 observations) aged 65 to 105 years old.RESULTS: The prevalence of CI increased from 2002 to 2008 and then decreased until 2018. The age-standardized prevalence increased from 25.7% in 2002, 26.1% in 2005, to 28.2% in 2008, then decreased to 26.0% in 2011, 25.3% in 2014, and 24.9% in 2018. Females and those ≥ 80 years old had greater CI prevalence.DISCUSSION: The prevalence of CI showed an inverted U shape from early 2000s to late 2010s with a peak in 2008. Follow-up studies are needed to confirm the decreasing trend after 2008 and examine the contributing factors and underlying mechanisms of this trend.

  • Phylogenomics, divergence times and notes of orders in Basidiomycota

    • Basidiomycota is one of the major phyla in the fungal tree of life. The outline of Basidiomycota provides essential taxonomic information for researchers and workers in mycology. In this study, we present a time-framed phylogenomic tree with 487 species of Basidiomycota from 127 families, 47 orders, 14 classes and four subphyla; we update the outline of Basidiomycota based on the phylogenomic relationships and the taxonomic studies since 2019; and we provide notes for each order and discuss the history, defining characteristics, evolution, justification of orders, problems, significance, and plates. Our phylogenomic analysis suggests that the subphyla diverged in a time range of 443–490 Myr (million years), classes in a time range of 312–412 Myr, and orders in a time range of 102–361 Myr. Families diverged in a time range of 50–289 Myr, 76–224 Myr, and 62–156 Myr in Agaricomycotina, Pucciniomycotina, and Ustilaginomycotina, respectively. Based on the phylogenomic relationships and divergence times, we propose a new suborder Mycenineae in Agaricales to accommodate Mycenaceae. In the current outline of Basidiomycota, there are four subphyla, 20 classes, 77 orders, 297 families, and 2134 genera accepted. When building a robust taxonomy of Basidiomycota in the genomic era, the generation of molecular phylogenetic data has become relatively easier. Finding phenotypical characters, especially those that can be applied for identification and classification, however, has become increasingly challenging.

    • G-Quadruplex (G4) DNA structures are important regulatory elements in central biological processes. Small molecules that selectively bind and stabilize G4 structures have therapeutic potential, and there are currently >1000 known G4 ligands. Despite this, only two G4 ligands ever made it to clinical trials. In this work, we synthesized several heterocyclic G4 ligands and studied their interactions with G4s (e.g., G4s from the c-MYC, c-KIT, and BCL-2 promoters) using biochemical assays. We further studied the effect of selected compounds on cell viability, the effect on the number of G4s in cells, and their pharmacokinetic properties. This identified potent G4 ligands with suitable properties and further revealed that the dispersion component in arene-arene interactions in combination with electron-deficient electrostatics is central for the ligand to bind with the G4 efficiently. The presented design strategy can be applied in the further development of G4-ligands with suitable properties to explore G4s as therapeutic targets.

  • Delay-throughput tradeoffs for signalized networks with finite queue capacity

    • Network-level adaptive signal control is an effective way to reduce delay and increase network throughput. However, in the face of asymmetric exogenous demand, the increase of network performance via adaptive signal control alone is at the expense of service fairness (i.e., phase actuation fairness and network resource utilization fairness). In addition, for oversaturated networks, arbitrary adaptive signal control seems to have little effect on improving network performance. Therefore, under the assumption that the mean routing proportions/turn ratios of vehicles at intersections are fixed, this study investigates the problem of optimally allocating input rates to entry links and simultaneously finding a stabilizing signal control policy with phase fairness. We model the stochastic optimization problem of maximizing network throughput subject to network stability (i.e., all queue lengths have finite means) and average phase actuation constraints to bridge the gap between stochastic network stability control and convex optimization. Moreover, we further propose a micro-level joint admission and bounded signal control algorithm to achieve network stability and throughput optimization simultaneously. Joint control is implemented in a fully decomposed and distributed manner. For any arrival rate, joint control provably achieves network throughput within O(1/V) of optimality while trading off average delay with O(V), where V is an adjusted control parameter. Through a comparative simulation of a real network with 256 O-D pairs, the proposed joint control keeps network throughput at maximum, guarantees service fairness, and fully utilizes network capacity (i.e., increases network throughput by 17.54%).

  • Magnetic frustration and glassiness in an icosahedral i-Tb-Cd quasicrystal

    • The dynamical magnetic properties of the icosahedral i-Tb-Cd quasicrystal (QC) were investigated by means of squid magnetometry. At low temperatures, below T ∼ 4.5 K, we observe conventional spin glass features including aging, memory, and rejuvenation. Interestingly, from T ∼ 4.5 to 10 K, the spin configuration is also found to evolve with time (i.e., age as in spin glass), yet without memory. This suggests a reentrantlike behavior for the i-Tb-Cd QC, where upon cooling from high temperatures, the system first displays a magnetically frustrated phase before turning into a spin glasslike one at the lowest temperatures. We discuss the nature and possible origin of this magnetic behavior, in the light of the results obtained in the i-Gd-Cd QC, and ternary Tb-based quasicrystal approximants.

    • This paper presents a low-noise bioimpedance (bio-Z) spectroscopy interface for electrical impedance myography (EIM) over the 1 kHz to 2 MHz frequency range. The proposed interface employs a sinusoidal signal generator based on direct-digital-synthesis (DDS) to improve the accuracy of the bio-Z reading, and a quadrature low-intermediate frequency (IF) readout to achieve a good noise-to-power efficiency and the required data throughput to detect muscle contractions. The readout is able to measure baseline and time-varying bio-Z by employing robust and power-efficient low-gain IAs and sixth-order single-bit bandpass (BP) ΔΣ ADCs. The proposed bio-Z spectroscopy interface is implemented in a 180 nm CMOS process, consumes 344.3 - 479.3 μ W, and occupies 5.4 mm 2 area. Measurement results show 0.7 mΩ/√Hz sensitivity at 15.625 kHz, 105.8 dB SNR within 4 Hz bandwidth, and a 146.5 dB figure-of-merit. Additionally, recording of EIM in time and frequency domain during contractions of the bicep brachii muscle demonstrates the potential of the proposed bio-Z interface for wearable EIM systems.

    • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a self-directed home based therapeutic tool in early rehabilitation for musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. However, the effectiveness of traditional NMES is fundamentally constrained by muscle fatigue. To address this limitation, this work proposes a detection system, which simultaneously records multifrequency electrical impedance myography (EIM) and surface electromyography(sEMG) in real time for time-frequency analysis of muscle activation, contraction, and fatigue. To demonstrate the ability to monitor these muscle physiological states, two experiments involving weightless and weighted dynamic contractions of the biceps brachii muscle were performed. Results from these experiments show synchronous changes in sEMG and EIM spectra during contractions, and clear trends in sEMG’s mean power frequency (MPF) and EIM spectra with fatigue progression. Additionally, the configurable 4-channel NMES has been electrically evaluated for clinical use, demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed system for closed-loop stimulation. This work showcases the potential of sEMG and multi-frequency EIM to enhance the effectiveness of NMES for MSK conditions by capturing the behavior of distinct mechanisms of muscle fatigue.

    • As the sole carbonaceous renewable energy source, biomass is distinguished by its abundant yield, widespread distribution, and carbon neutrality. It is integral to the achievement of zero and negative carbon production via conventional carbonaceous pellet technology. This study introduces a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment methodology for biomass preparation in carbonaceous pellets. We prepare high-quality biochar through a process combining hydrothermal carbonization and pyrolytic carbonization. Biomass high molecular weight extracts are obtained via organic pyrolytic extraction, while biomass high-temperature binders result from the modification and treatment of biochar. Biomass carbonaceous pellets are then formed using hot press technology. The ReCiPe model facilitates a comprehensive life cycle assessment of biomass carbonaceous pellets used in blast furnace production. The study leverages two comprehensive evaluation indicators - renewability, and environmental performance - to enhance the environmental performance of the process system and to maximize energy-saving and emission reduction potential.

    • Industrialized insect-based bioconversion is a technologically promising and economical viable approach for solving global crisis of food security and waste management. The successful implementation of such a multi-disciplinary system requires comprehensive expertise and skills from biotechnology, automation, information, and circular economy domains. This is rather difficult for existing practitioners. To simplify their jobs, by leveraging recent advances in industrial informatics, this work proposed and developed a low-code development platform for engineering the automation logic of industrial insect rearing and processing. For feasibility demonstration, a pilot facility has been designed, deployed, and benchmarked in this work. When compared with the conventional pro-code practice, the proposed low-code approach can significantly reduce development costs, shorten delivery times, and improve communication efficiency.

    • Bee pollen is hailed as a treasure trove of human nutrition and has progressively emerged as the source of functional food and medicine. This review conducts a compilation of nutrients and phytochemicals in bee pollen, with particular emphasis on some ubiquitous and unique phenolamides and flavonoid glycosides. Additionally, it provides a concise overview of the diverse health benefits and therapeutic properties of bee pollen, particularly anti-prostatitis and anti-tyrosinase effects. Furthermore, based on the distinctive structural characteristics of pollen walls, a substantial debate has persisted in the past concerning the necessity of wall-disruption. This review provides a comprehensive survey on the necessity of wall-disruption, the impact of wall-disruption on the release and digestion of nutrients, and wall-disruption techniques in industrial production. Wall-disruption appears effective in releasing and digesting nutrients and exploiting bee pollen's bioactivities. Finally, the review underscores the need for future studies to elucidate the mechanisms of beneficial effects. This paper will likely help us gain better insight into bee pollen to develop further functional foods, personalized nutraceuticals, cosmetics products, and medicine.
