    • A new Schiff base 4-[N-hydroxyethyl-N-(methyl)amino]benzaldehyde S-methyl dithiocarbazate (HL, where H is a dissociable proton) and the ruthenium complex [Ru(bpy)2L]PF6 (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) have been synthesized. The structural determinations of the ligand and its ruthenium complex, by X-ray crystallography, show that the ligand is coordinated as a monoanionic bidentate N, S-donor, forming a four-member chelate ring with a bite angle of 65.91°. The complex shows intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. Fluorescent and electrochemical properties have been also studied. The complex in DMF solution exhibited a strong two-photon absorption (t.p.a.) at 532 nm nanosecond laser pulses. The t.p.a. coefficient β, t.p.a. cross-section σ and the third-order optical nonlinearity χ(3) of the complex and the ligand have been determined by the Z-scan technique.

    • Carbon-nanotube (CNT)-reinforced hydroxyapatite composite coatings have been fabricated by laser surface alloying. Microstructural observation using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed that a large amount of CNTs remained with their original tubular morphology, even though some CNTs reacted with titanium element in the substrate during laser irradiation. Additionally, measurements on the elastic modulus and hardness of the composite coatings indicated that the mechanical properties were affected by the amount of CNTs in the starting precursor materials. Therefore, CNT-reinforced hydroxyapatite composite is a promising coating material for high-load-bearing metal implants

  • Nanocrystalline thermoelectric alloys : Processing, chemistry and characterization

    • A novel chemical alloying method has been developed for the fabrication of nanocrystalline thermoelectric alloys cobalt antimonide, CoSb3, and bismuth telluride, Bi2Te3. The method combines a solution chemical method and thermal processing under controlled heating conditions. The components have been co-precipitated from a solution and the precursor consisted of a solid solution of the different intermediate compounds with different crystallinity. Calcination and hydrogen reduction of the precursor at moderate temperature, 350degreesC, resulted in the alloying of these elements to obtain the nanocrystalline thermoelectric material. Crystallization of the amorphous precursor as well as the processing route have been investigated by following the changes in the chemistry of the material from the precursor to the final alloy. Detailed microstructure investigation by electron microscopy has also been presented.

    • The one-photon and two-photon absorption properties of a series of 1, 4-dimethoxy-2, 5-divinyl-benzene derivatives are investigated by use of the analytic response theory at HF level. The one-photon and two-photon fluorescence spectra of E, E-2-5Bis[4'-(N, N-di-n-butylamino) styryl]-1 4-dimenthoxybenzene are measured. The numerical results show that these molecules have strong two-photon absorption cross sections. In the visible light region, the maximal one-photon absorption strengths of the molecules occur in the first excited state. Furthermore, the maximal two-photon absorption cross sections of the D-pi-A typed molecules still appear in the first state, but for D-pi-D typed molecules the second excited state has the maximal two-photon absorption cross-section. The optical properties of the molecules are closely related to the electric property of the donor and acceptor. The symmetrically substituted molecules can not be determined to have a larger two-photon absorption cross section than the asymmetrically substituted molecules for such a kind of pi-center. The charge-transfer process for the charge-transfer states is displayed, and then the mechanism of photopolymerization is discussed qualitatively.
