Business Basics : A Grounded Theory for Managing Ethical Behavior in Sales Organizations

- Background: Managing co-workers’ ethical behavior in sales organizations is a complex social process. To start, sales organizations incorporate several actors to manage, often simultaneously, all with their own agendas. Ethics as a topic is convoluted because it encompasses context-based scenarios which may not have clear-cut right and wrong answers. The management process is an ongoing task managers deal with on daily basis, where mismanagement can lead to severe consequences. The majority of existing research on this area tends to focus on single factors in the management process, not the whole process. While there are some research studies that presents models or integrated frameworks describing the management process, they are few in number.Aim: The aim of this study is to derive empirical concepts and thereby try to develop a theory to facilitate an understanding of the process of managing co-workers’ ethical behavior, where the purpose is to ultimately build an integrated framework. More specifically, this study aims to describe the involved actors’ main concerns and the process by which these are continuously resolved.Methodology: In order to achieve the aim, a method with an inductive approach was necessary. The orthodox Grounded Theory methodology was chosen as research approach since it can generate conceptualizations in an integrated framework which help explain the occurring social processes. Working from this approach means that the researcher develops a new theory that is grounded in empirical data, where the researcher inductively describes the social process. The empirical data was mainly derived from interviews with actors within the field. The data was collected, coded and conceptualized in an overlapping procedure until an empirically derived theory emerged After the emergence of the theory, the empirical data was validated with existing academic literature.Findings: The core category in this study is Business Basics and concerns the desire to continuously conduct business where the management of ethical behavior is a fundamental basis to achieve this. Five distinct categories, all related to the core category were revealed: Bureaucratization, Relationship Investing, Educationing, Monetary Managing and Intuiting. These categories are expressed in social and dynamic processes. They represent different activities, tools, influences and practices that managers can adopt in order to reach their main concern.Contribution: As a contribution, this dissertation provides an integrated framework based on the actors own subjective experiences, describing the dynamic and social processes of managing co-workers ethical behavior in sales organizations.

I den här boken lyfter författarna fram visuell kultur både som ett kunskapsobjekt och som en undersökningsmetod. Boken erbjuder ingångar till olika sätt att arbeta med bild i grundskolan. Alla kapitel innehåller konkreta förslag på uppgifter eller övningar som kan anpassas och utvecklas vidare. Boken riktar sig till lärarstudenter och verksamma lärare i F-6 och på fritidshem. Den kan användas både i bildundervisning och i ämnesövergripande eller tematiska projekt. Redaktörerna forskar inom området visuell kultur och har alla tre erfarenhet av att undervisa blivande lärare i bild mot yngre åldrar och fritidshem.

Toleransens altare och undvikandets hänsynsfullhet : Religion och meningsskapande bland svenska grundskoleelever

- In contemporary western society, the changing religious diversity brought to the fore a more visible religion. The Swedish school and the Swedish classrooms are no exception. From a perspective of sensemaking and a wide understanding of religion and religious positions this thesis analyses the discourse on religion among pupils (age 9 to 16) in the Swedish elementary school and under what circumstances they do, or do not, talk about religion with each another. This qualitative study includes themes from and contributes to the study of religion, research on children and young people, and particularly to religious education (RE) in Sweden and elsewhere. The results show that the pupils during the interviews showed different and parallel ways of understanding, relate to and way of talking about religion. However, to some degree they seemed to be unwilling to talk about religion with each other, even though they expressed some interest thereof. Two reasons for this were their limited common discourses on religion, and their concern and anxiety to create conflict and to “step on somebody’s toes”. The latter was also combined with their tendency to show tolerance, respect and deference towards each other. Thirdly, due to their partial lack of discourses on religion the pupils had difficulties to position themselves in relation to religion and to understand others. For instance, this came to the fore and was exemplified by the non-Christian Swedish pupils. They seemed to lack categories to speak of themselves in relation to religion and, for instance, answer questions like: “What do you believe in?”.Even though the pupils did not talk much about religion with each other, the result shows that they had several ways of talking about and understanding religion and religious phenomena – for instance based on popular culture. Not all these understandings and discourses on religion where paid attention to in school or in class. Instead, the pupils had to adapt to discourses prevalent in school which narrowed the possible ways of understanding and talking about religion. In line with this, there were several positions in relation to religion – for instance unsure and uncertain positions – in these schools that was not observed. However, these pupils also have the need to express and understand themselves in relation to religion as well as being understood by others. This is a future challenge for RE-research as well as teaching in schools.The results of this study show, lastly, that the experience and desires expressed by the pupils concerning talking about religion differed to a great extent from the use of dialogue in RE-research. Among the pupils it seemed that the conversation about religion was sacrificed on the altars of tolerance, respect and deference. These results were discussed in relation to the concept of safe space, a concept that needs to be elaborated and sharpened further in RE.

Äldreomsorgen i historisk belysning : organisering, politisering, professionalisering

- Rapportens syfte är att skapa förståelse för äldreomsorgens praktik, styrning och ideologi idag, genom att sätta detta i ett historiskt sammanhang. Vi visar hur styrning och ledning av äldreomsorgen gradvis blir mer abstrakta och hur styrningspraktiken distanseras från den sociala verkligheten. Detta går hand i hand med, och menar vi kanske delvis beror på att, nya mer professionella tjänstemannagrupper, ibland helt utan erfarenhet och utbildning inom äldreomsorgen fått en viktigare roll, samtidigt som kommunpolitiken alltmer partipolitiserats och samtidigt blivit en karriärväg för de ledande partiföreträdarna. Vårt fokus ligger på nutiden, men för att förstå denna går vi tillbaka i äldreomsorgens historia, och beskriver hur äldreomsorgen utformats under olika tider, samt hur det uppstod en kommunal politikerroll som skulle styra äldreomsorgen. Efter det beskriver vi hur de yrkesgrupper som dominerar administration och organisation av äldreomsorgen vuxit fram och utvecklats. Slutligen diskuterar vi konsekvenserna av utvecklingen för äldreomsorgen idag. Rapportens empiriska material bygger på arkivmaterial från Uppsala kommun samt nationella och lokala styrdokument av social omsorg i allmänhet och äldreomsorg i synnerhet.

- Konflikter kan uppstå på alla nivåer och i alla sammanhang – inom och mellan individer, grupper, företag, institutioner, organisationer ochnationer m.fl. Medling kan användas för att hantera många olika typer av konflikter. Trots att medling som konflikthanteringsmetodi vissa fall är införlivad i både lagstiftning, riktlinjer och praktik är kunskapen om medling begränsad i Sverige. Det gäller om, när och hur medling ska eller bör genomföras samt vilka effekter den har. Denna bok fokuserar inte på hur och varför konflikter uppstår, utan på hur konflikter kan hanteras för att minska dessas negativa effekter och ger även verktyg för att hantera framtida konflikter eller till och med förebygga att sådana uppstår. Medlingsområdena berör barn och unga och då FN:s barnkonvention är lag i Sverige ställs frågan om hur barnets rättigheter inom de olika konfliktområdena bäst kan tillgodoses – både i konflikter som barn och unga kan drabbas av samti sådana som de själva orsakar. Boken behandlar de bakomliggande idéerna och den rättsliga reglering som medling vilar på samt hur medling bedrivs i Sverige ochi andra länder. Även problem och utmaningar med medling samt när medling är lämpligt respektive mindre lämpligt som verktyg i konflikter som rör barn och unga diskuteras i boken. Slutligen väcks frågan om medlingens framtid i Sverige och hur denna konflikthanteringsmetod kan implementeras för att på bästa sätt nyttja dess potential. Boken kan användas vid t.ex. lärar-, socionom-, polis- och juristutbildningarna. Den riktar sig även till praktiker inom dessa områden samt till åklagare, domare, advokater, politiker, lagstiftare och forskarsamfundet.

Healthcare Service Marketing in Medical Tourism : An Emerging Market Study

- Medical tourism (MT) enables patients to satisfy their healthcare needs by traveling outside their country of residence to obtain medical treatment. The increasing number of scientific publications, different countries’ engagement in providing care for foreigners, and patients heading abroad to receive healthcare indicate the growth and popularity of MT. This industry’s development exposes the healthcare sector to a competitive environment. As a result, marketing has become a significant part of healthcare providers’ operations and survival. Research into how these providers promote their services is limited. This limitation is further apparent for healthcare providers located in less popular destinations, such as emerging market (EM) countries. This dissertation therefore focuses on MT service providers in an EM, the Philippines.This study aims to examine how service providers in an EM country market healthcare services internationally. This thesis consists of four articles. Through qualitative case-based research, this study concentrates on hospitals, clinics, and medical tourism facilitators that play a central role in service delivery within the MT industry. The results from this thesis show that to efficiently market healthcare, service providers have to build trust, establish reliable networks, and offer customized and supplementary services.This dissertation is positioned to contribute to relevance and diversity in service marketing research and the budding healthcare service marketing while sustaining MT literature through studying service providers in an EM context. Although this study was based on one EM, it offers an in-depth understanding of how the marketing of healthcare services is being implemented. This knowledge is not only important for the practicing medical tourism destination countries, but also for patients, managers, policymakers, and researchers in the patients’ home country. Future studies could focus on the perspective of consumers. Accordingly, this study is an initial step toward a deeper understanding of the marketing of commercialized healthcare.

- Established scholars encourage academics from different fields to make a contribution to the service research to advance, maintain relevance, and promote diversity in the service discipline. This study focuses on a novel type of intermediaries called medical tourism facilitators that assume a vital function in the medical tourism industry. Applying the case study method, the researchers collected qualitative data from three medical tourism facilitators in the Philippines. The study presents a model that includes six supplementary services, namely: information dissemination, consultation, booking, providing hospitality, network development, and support industry development.

Bouncing off Ove : Old men's readings of the novel A Man Called Ove as a cultural representation of ageing masculinity

- In recent years, there has been a rise in portrayals of greying protagonists in popular fiction, often featuring older people in humorous and heart-warming stories. An emerging genre within this literature is the “geezer and grump lit”, a genre where older people are active protagonists, and while often portrayed as grumpy “’usually turn out to have a heart of gold’” (Swinnen, 2019). A notable example of a book in this genre is the internationally bestselling novel A Man Called Ove (2012) by the Swedish author Fredrik Backman. Telling the story of the 59-year-old Ove who sets out to take his own life, the novel can be understood not only as a cultural representation of ageing, but more specifically a cultural representation of ageing masculinity. But how is this popular novel read and responded to by old men themselves? This article builds on a focus group study with Swedish men aged 65–92 who read and discussed A Man Called Ove. The aim of this article is thus to explore how men read the novel and how these readings function as ways of constructing, negotiating and challenging ageing masculinity and the old man as a gendered and aged position. Findings of the study show how discussion of the novel generated a variety of “imaginary positions” through which the participants made sense of what it means to be an old man in contemporary Sweden, including positions such as the active aspiring ageing man, the passive lonely old man, the embodied and vulnerable old man, and the dutiful old man. Future research should explore how other literary genres may provide ways of understanding how old men's gendered and aged subjectivities are constructed.

- The Swedish universal welfare state has transformed since the 1990s into a mixed welfare model with increasing deregulation, recommodification, and reverse distribution from the public to the private sector where capital and influence have concentrated. In major cities such as Stockholm, this has resulted in a polarization where groups in the city centre and residential areas have accumulated wealth and resources while groups in marginalized suburbs and neighbourhoods have faced increasing social exclusion and marginalization. Public sector social work has long focused on individual case work, whereas this development calls for increasing community work initiatives. In this article, we analyse the rise of urban social movements mobilizing for inclusion, influence, and social justice as important aspects of contemporary community work in the Swedish urban periphery. Through analysis of semi-structured interviews with community workers and activists as well as media articles, reports, and web-based materials, the results show how the mobilization of the organization Megafonen has contributed to the development of new social institutions and urban commons.
