  • Flexural properties of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) small clear wood specimens in relation to the direction of load application
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Wood and Wood Products. - : Springer. - 0018-3768 .- 1436-736X. ; 60:5, s. 325-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Values of pure moduli of elasticity (PMOE), experimental modulus of elasticity (MOE) in static bending and moduli of rigidity (GLR, GLT) were calculated in juvenile and mature black locust defect-free small wood specimens after loading in static bending alternately on true radial and tangential surfaces. For both juvenile and mature specimens, no significant differences (t-test, 95% probability level) were found between the radial and tangential moduli of elasticity and rigidity. Values of PMOE were found to be 27–32% higher than the corresponding values of MOE at the 15:1 span-to-depth ratio.

  • Influence of hot-water extractives on radial and tangential shrinkage of black locust wood (Robinia pseudoacacia L.)
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Wood and Wood Products. - : Springer. - 0018-3768 .- 1436-736X. ; 60:5, s. 377-378
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IntroductionRemoval of extractives increases the shrinkage and swelling of wood (Nearn 1955, Salamon and Kozak 1968, Cooper 1974, Taylor 1974). The effect of progressive extraction on the above properties has not been investigated much. In oak (Quercus conferta L.), a forest species rich in extractives, the shrinkage progressively increased with progressive extraction (Voulgaridis et al. 1980). In black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), much of the main-stem volume is comprised of heartwood, characterized by the presence of dark yellow-brown extractives. While the extractives of black locust give the heartwood its distinctive color and decay resistance, they comprise only 6.2 to 8.3% of the dry weight of the main stem (Stringer 1992). Hot-water extractives range from 5.2 to 8.6% (Hart 1968, So et al. 1980). The present study was primarily undertaken to determine whether the progressive removal of hot-water extractives affects the radial and tangential shrinkage of black locust heartwood.

  • Within-tree variation in growth rate and cell dimensions in the wood of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: IAWA Journal. - : Brill Academic Publishers. - 0928-1541 .- 2294-1932. ; 23:2, s. 191-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is regarded as an important natural resource almost throughout the world but relatively little is known about the within-tree variability of the anatomical characteristics of its wood. Discs 2 cm thick were cut at 2.25 m intervals, from the ground level to the top from ten black locust trees, 18–37-years-old, from the University Forest of Taxiarchi, Chalkidiki, Greece. The discs were used for the determination of growth rate and cell dimensions (fiber length and vessel member length and diameter) and their withintree variability (radial, oblique, vertical). Growth rate increased within the first 5–9 growth rings from the pith and then gradually decreased. Oblique variation of growth rate did not exhibit any clear tendency but a decrease at the top. In the case of vertical variation, growth rate decreased gradually with the year of cambium formation. Radial variability curves were found to be typical for the dimensions of cells (fibers, vessel members) especially for the fiber length. A rapid increase in cell dimensions was observed in the first 7–11 growth rings, the juvenile zone. Oblique and vertical variation of cell dimensions did not exhibit any clear tendencies.

  • Qualifications of information specialists : a case of library and information students at the Department of Information Science, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb, Croatia
  • 2002
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The results of this short research are a confirmation to the hypothesis that stretches throughout the area of information science and refers to the fact that knowledge of an information expert is one of the most volatile ones. Based on the analysis of four-year students' answers several areas not sufficiently present in the Department's educational programme were sorted out. Students primarily pointed to the problem of quality practicums that are, in their opinion, insufficiently covered by the programme. The same is true for courses dealing with computers in general. This primarily refers to the need to get acquainted with the area of programming and applications that are basic for the profession, as well as to introducing the courses on marketing and communicology. What students can expect is knowledge and skills that would prepare them and direct them for acquiring knowledge specific for a variety of working environments, knowledge for adaptation and development, which calls for constant development and growth.

  • Search for the lepton-family-number nonconserving decay μ +→e +γ
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 65:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The MEGA experiment, which searched for the muon- and electron-number violating decay μ +→e + γ, is described. The spectrometer system, the calibrations, the data taking procedures, the data analysis, and the sensitivity of the experiment are discussed. The most stringent upper limit on the branching ratio, B(μ + →e + γ)<1.2×10 -11 with 90% confidence, is derived from a likelihood analysis.

  • Limits to the muon flux from WIMP annihilation in the center of the Earth with the AMANDA detector
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 66:3, s. 032006-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for nearly vertical up-going muon-neutrinos from neutralino annihilations in the center of the Earth has been performed with the AMANDA-B10 neutrino detector. The data collected in 130.1 days of live time in 1997, ∼10 9 events, have been analyzed for this search. No excess over the expected atmospheric neutrino background has been observed. An upper limit at 90% confidence level has been obtained on the annihilation rate of neutralinos in the center of the Earth, as well as the corresponding muon flux limit, both as a function of the neutralino mass in the range 100 GeV-5000 GeV. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

  • Observation of high energy atmospheric neutrinos with the Antarctic muon and neutrino detector array
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 66:1, s. 120051-1200520
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Antarctic muon and neutrino detector array (AMANDA) began collecting data with ten strings in 1997. Results from the first year of operation are presented. Neutrinos coming through the Earth from the Northern Hemisphere are identified by secondary muons moving upward through the array. Cosmic rays in the atmosphere generate a background of downward moving muons, which are about 106 times more abundant than the upward moving muons. Over 130 days of exposure, we observed a total of about 300 neutrino events. In the same period, a background of 1.05 × 109 cosmic ray muon events was recorded. The observed neutrino flux is consistent with atmospheric neutrino predictions. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that 90% of these events lie in the energy range 66 GeV to 3.4 TeV. The observation of atmospheric neutrinos consistent with expectations establishes AMANDA-B10 as a working neutrino telescope.

  • Physics and operation of the AMANDA-II high energy neutrino telescope
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering 2003. - : Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE). ; , s. 79-91
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper briefly describes the principle of operation and science goals of the AMANDA high energy neutrino telescope located at the South Pole, Antarctica. Results from an earlier phase of the telescope, called AMANDA-B10, demonstrate both reliable operation and the broad astrophysical reach of this device, which includes searches for a variety of sources of ultrahigh energy neutrinos: generic point sources, Gamma-Ray Bursts and diffuse sources. The predicted sensitivity and angular resolution of the telescope were confirmed by studies of atmospheric muon and neutrino backgrounds. We also report on the status of the analysis from AMANDA-II, a larger version with far greater capabilities. At this stage of analysis, details of the ice properties and other systematic uncertainties of the AMANDA-II telescope are under study, but we have made progress toward critical science objectives. In particular, we focus on the search for continuous emission from astrophysical point sources and the search for correlated neutrino emission from Gamma Ray Bursts detected by BATSE before decommissioning in May 2000. During the next two years, we expect to exploit the full potential of AMANDA-II with the installation of a new data acquisition system that records full waveforms from the in-ice optical sensors.
