  • Circle Suite - NIME'15 performance
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Jury-selected performance at the 15th International Conference of New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME'15). - Baton Rouge, LA, USA : Louisiana State University.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Circle Suite (Circle Squared, Circle Keys, Circle Self) (2011-2014) Circle Suite is a work in three movements for Disklavier player piano, controlled by the composer in three different ways. It is the result of an experiment into how to gesturally control an unstable generative system. The underlying agent-based system of four musicians is the same in all three movements. First, the feedback parameters are controlled through a set of pressure sensors using a novel vector-based mapping, with the controller placed on top of the piano. Second, the parameters are mapped from the pianist’s interactions on the very same piano that performs the output of the system. Finally, the system is left autonomously playing on itself through the very same mapping, seeded by pianist. The three movements follow each other without a break. This progression from an intimately controlled instrument to a set of co-musicians to an autonomous machine also raises questions about the relationship between the musician and his instrument, and about generative and performative aspects of music. The individual movements have been previously performed, but this is the World Premiere for the whole suite.

  • Crisis Management Study (World Premiere Performance)
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Live performance at Théâtre des Variétés, Monaco Electro Acoustique Festival 2015. - Monaco : Academie Rainier III.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this previous work, Dahlstedt has investigated strategies to explore high-dimensional parameter spaces through bodily interaction, and how to perform and improvise on highly unstable feedback systems (e.g., in duo pantoMorf, Pencil Fields, Foldings, Circle Suite). Here, he tries a new approach, using two parallel feedback systems for audio and gestural data respectively, controlled simultaneously from a physical controller, guided by ear. Thus, he has to work with performance patterns such as probe and react, find and rest, explore and contemplate (what you have before you lose it). Or possibly even: go to the limit and jump ship. The title alludes to Dahlstedt's close work with people in global crisis management and decision making, through the Tällberg Foundation.

  • Mapping Strategies and Sound Engine Design for an Augmented Hybrid Piano
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), Baton Rouge, May 31 - June 3, 2015. - 2220-4806.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on a combination of novel mapping techniques and carefully designed sound engines, I present an augmented hybrid piano specifically designed for improvisation. The mapping technique, originally developed for other control interfaces but here adapted to the piano keyboard, is based on a dynamic vectorization of control parameters, allowing both wild sonic exploration and minute intimate expression. The original piano sound is used as the sole sound source, subjected to processing techniques such as virtual resonance strings, dynamic buffer shuffling, and acoustic and virtual feedback. Thanks to speaker and microphone placement, the acoustic and processed sounds interact in both directions and blend into one new instrument. This also allows for unorthodox playing (knocking, plucking, shouting). Processing parameters are controlled from the keyboard playing alone, allowing intuitive control of complex processing by ear, integrating expressive musical playing with sonic exploration. The instrument is not random, but somewhat unpredictable. This feeds into the improvisation, defining a particular idiomatics of the instruments. Hence, the instrument itself is an essential part of the musical work. Performances include concerts in UK, Japan, Singapore, Australia and Sweden, in solos and ensembles, performed by several pianists. Variations of this hybrid instrument for digital keyboards are also presented.

  • The Bucket System - a computer mediated signalling system for group improvisation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), Baton Rouge, May 31 - June 3, 2015. - 2220-4806. ; 2015, s. 317-318
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Bucket System is a new system for computer-mediated ensemble improvisation, designed by improvisers for improvisers. Coming from a tradition of structured free ensemble improvisation practices (comprovisation), influenced by post-WW2 experimental music practices, it is a signaling system implemented with a set of McMillen QuNeo controllers as input and output interfaces, powered by custom software. It allows for a new kind of on-stage compositional/improvisation interaction.

  • The Bucket System - NIME Performance
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Concert performance at the 15th International Conference of New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME'15). - Baton Rouge, LA, USA : Louisiana State University.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Bucket System is a new work centered around a computer-mediated ensemble improvisation system. We call this “systemic improvisation”, where there is no predetermined timeline or predefined musical content. The music emerges from the dynamics of the system in an encounter with the personalities of the players. It comes out of a tradition of structured free ensemble improvisation practices, a.k.a comprovisation in addition to influences from experimental and avant-garde music practices of the post World War 2 period. The Bucket System is a signaling system between musicians, based on a set of McMillen QuNeo:s controllers as both input and output interfaces together with custom software implemented in Pure Data. It allows for a new kind of on-stage compositional/ improvisation interaction within a group of acoustic or electronic musicians.
