- Maternal allocation of antioxidants to egg yolk has been shown to affect early embryonic development and nestling survival. In environments with high levels of anthropogenic pollution, antioxidants (such as carotenoids) are important to protect the body from elevated oxidative stress. Thus, female allocation of antioxidants to yolk may be traded off against self‐maintenance. Here we investigate maternal reproductive investment with respect to yolk carotenoid content and composition in relation to subsequent female condition and carotenoid status in urban and rural great tits Parus major. We found no differences between the urban and rural populations in total yolk carotenoids, egg mass, clutch size, hatching success, or female carotenoid status. Interestingly, however, rural eggs contained more zeaxanthin, a more potent antioxidant than lutein, which suggests that rural embryos have better antioxidant protection than urban embryos. Whether rural females actively transfer more zeaxanthin to the yolk or whether it passively reflects differences in dietary access or uptake needs to be further investigated. This highlights the importance of carotenoid identity and composition in future studies of carotenoid physiology, ecology, and signaling.

- In the seventh edition of The Swedish Academy Glossary (SAOL) in 1900, biologically based gender was included in addition to grammatical gender. This required the SAOL editor to take a stance as to the sex of the non-neuter nouns referring to persons: Was it a question of men or women or both? Based on the SAOL gender designations, this article discusses those factors, both linguistic and non-linguistic, that were determinative for the editor’s classification. That a word’s traditional grammatical gender continued to play an important role is clear: a significant number of the personal nouns received the designation “m.” (masculine) or “f.” (feminine) regardless of the sex of the reference. And although many of the personal nouns that traditionally were classified as masculine in the 1900 edition were designated as “mf.” (masculine and feminine), a significant discrepancy can be traced between the SAOL gender designations and the reality outside the linguistic world – the place women received in SAOL is considerably narrower than that which was the actual case for women at the turn of the 19th century.

- Denna rapport, som har fokus på grupphandledning i psykoterapiutbildning, ger en sammanfattande bild av resultat som erhållits genom ett samarbetsprojekt mellan ett flertal svenska universitet och universitetsrelaterade utbildningsenheter. Projektet bygger på studier av grupphandledning på tre olika utbildningsnivåer; grundläggande psykoterapiutbildning, psykoterapeutbildning och handledarutbildning. Olika teoretiska inriktningar är representerade. Grupperna har omfattat tre eller fyra handledda och en handledare. Kvantitativa och kvalitativa data har samlats in i början, mitten och slutet av respektive utbildning. De studier som presenteras här undersöker och belyser olika aspekter av grupphandledning som upplevelsen av handledning på olika utbildningsnivåer, skillnader och likheter mellan olika psykoterapeutiska inriktningar utifrån att handledningen sker i form av grupphandledning samt upplevelser av gruppklimat och betydelsen av handledarens förhållningssätt. Ett viktigt fynd är att både handledare och handledda betonar behovet av att grupprocesser och fenomen som har sina rötter i såväl samspelet gruppdeltagarna emellan som handledarens förhållningssätt och utbildningens ramar uppmärksammas mer i grupphandledning i psykoterapi.

What pupils in vocational schools learn about risk at work

- Negative health effects because of poor work environment is more common among young workers compared to older. One explanation might be that younger ones have a low awareness of risk, a lack of safety training, and inadequate introductions to the work. A study has been made focusing on the pupils in vocational schools knowledge and experiences about potential work environment risks in their future work. Questionnaires were distributed to 239 pupils in ten Swedish upper secondary schools’ graduating classes in four vocational programs focusing on basic knowledge about health risks at work as well as the work environment legislation. The programs were the Industrial Technology Program, the Restaurant Management and Food Program, the Transport Program, and the Handicraft Program (in which students specialize in wood). The results from the questionnaires were followed up with focus group discussions. The results showed that the pupils in general had limited knowledge that employers must, by law, conduct risk analyses and prevent risks. It was common that they mentioned themselves as the main responsible to work safe and was not clear about the employers’ duty to arrange for safe work. Pupils in all programs mentioned acute risk as the biggest risk at work. It was concluded that a systematic approach to pupils’ training in work environment is lacking. The results indicates a clear gap between what knowledge the pupils are offered and what’s intended by laws as well as state-of-the-art in occupational health risk research.

- In 2009–2010, several forensic DNA profiling kits customised for Europe and the Prüm Treaty were commercially released. The manufacturers have made efforts to increase the PCR inhibitor tolerance compared to previous kits, as shown by their increased resistance to known molecular inhibitors such as humic acid and haematin. We have evaluated three new 15 STR-marker profiling kits (AmpFlSTR NGM, PowerPlex ESI16 and PowerPlex ESX16) on various PCR-inhibitory crime scene samples. All three kits produced usable DNA profiles from most samples. However, the kits were affected by inhibitory compounds from some of the samples, resulting in partial DNA profiles.

- The purpose of this study is to investigate whether commercialization can explain the extent to which the Swedish news media during the 1998 and 2002 national elections framed politics as a game, followed an interpretive journalistic style and allowed politicians to speak for themselves. Six hypotheses were derived from the claim by Patterson (2000) that commercialism is the driving force behind the framing of politics as a game and, by implication, the increasing use of an interpretive journalistic style and shrinking sound- or inkbites. Taken together, the results show only mixed support for the hypotheses. The results thus indicate that perceiving commercialism as the crucial independent variable is too simplified. Moreover, it must certainly not be a universal truth that commercialism is driving the changes of election news coverage, or that there is always a contradiction between the media functioning in the marketplace of ideas and the marketplace of money.
