  • Microplastics from tyre and road wear: a literature review

    • This literature review concerns microplastics from tyre and road wear caused by road traffic. As there is limited knowledge about microplastics in general, and microplastics from road traffic in particular, the Swedish Government commissioned the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) to, during 2018-2020, develop and disseminate knowledge about microplastics from road traffic. The chapters in this report summarises existing knowledge about microplastics from road traffic with respect to the following aspects: sources, spread and presence; effects on and risk to the environment and human health; characteristics and chemical composition; tyre and road wear; sampling methods; analysis and sample preparation; and measures. The report also includes a chapter with overall conclusions, and a chapter about further research, development and investigation needs. The purpose of this report is to provide a basis for reducing the generation and spread of microplastics from road traffic. One aim of the report is to collate and disseminate knowledge about microplastics generated by tyre and road wear, and to review the current level of knowledge. A second aim is to identify knowledge gaps and research requirements in relation to microplastics from road traffic. This literature review is based on a review of scientific articles and reports, as well as technical literature and some information from experts and industry.

    • Denna kunskapssammanställning handlar om mikroplast från vägtrafikens däck- och vägslitage. Eftersom kunskapen om mikroplaster från vägtrafiken är begränsad samtidigt som däckslitage bedöms vara den största källan till utsläpp av mikroplast i Sverige, gav regeringen inom ramen för sitt arbete med plast och mikroplast Statens väg- och transportforskningsinstitut (VTI) i uppdrag att under 2018– 2020 ta fram och sprida kunskap om mikroplast från vägtrafiken. Varje kapitel i denna rapport sammanfattar befintlig kunskap om mikroplast från vägtrafiken avseende en eller flera aspekter. Dessa aspekter är: källor, spridning och förekomst; miljö- och hälsoeffekter samt risker; egenskaper och kemisk sammansättning; däck- och vägslitage; provtagningsmetoder; analys- och provberedningsmetoder samt åtgärder. Dessutom finns ett kapitel med sammanfattande slutsatser och allra sist ett kapitel om forsknings-, utvecklings- och utredningsbehov.Syftet med rapporten är att den ska utgöra ett underlag för att minska emissioner och spridning av mikroplast från vägtrafiken. Ett mål med rapporten är att sammanställa och sprida kunskap om mikroplast från däck- och vägslitage och att redogöra för nuvarande kunskapsläge. Ytterligare ett mål är att identifiera kunskaps- och forskningsbehov avseende mikroplast från vägtrafiken.Underlaget till denna kunskapssammanställning utgörs av vetenskapliga artiklar och rapporter samt facklitteratur och information från branschen och från experter.

  • Analysis and estimation of the maximum circulating current during the parallel operation of reconfigurable battery systems

    • Reconfigurable battery systems (RBSs) are emerging as a promising solution to safe, efficient, and robust energy storage and delivery through dynamically adjusting the battery connection topology. When the system connection is switched from series to parallel, circulating currents between parallel battery cells/modules can be triggered due to their voltage imbalance. During the hardware design of an RBS, the current rating of associated components, such as batteries, switches, and wires, depends on the maximum circulating currents. Moreover, given a developed RBS, the maximum circulating current also determines whether it is feasible to perform the relevant system reconfiguration. Thus, this paper is focused on modeling and analyzing the current distribution during the series-to-parallel battery reconfiguration and estimating the maximum circulating currents as well as their upper bound under various system states and operating scenarios. A prototype is set up to experimentally verify the effectiveness of the proposed method for estimating the maximum circulating currents.

  • Elimination/Mitigation of Output Voltage Harmonics for Multilevel Converters Operated at Fundamental Switching Frequency using Matlab's Genetic Algorithm Optimization

    • This paper deals with the optimization of the output voltage waveform of a multilevel converter operated with fundamental frequency switching. For a high number of output voltage levels, nearest-level control is typically used, whereas an optimized waveform can be presumably used to eliminate a selection of low order harmonics. A nonlinear optimization problem for any kind of multilevel inverter, operating in a single or three-phase arrangement, is formulated. It is shown that the set of nonlinear equations, defining this optimization problem, cannot be numerically solved, if the number of output voltage levels is higher than nine. Thus, an optimization algorithm, e.g., Matlab's genetic algorithm, should be used instead. Based on the concept of the weighted THD, it is shown that an optimized waveform has no effect on the output current's quality of a single phase multilevel converter. However, considering an ungrounded three-phase system, the content of the to be eliminated harmonic components is shifted towards the triplen harmonics and, consequently, the expected current quality, based on the WTHD, can be significantly improved.

  • Alternative sorption filter materials effectively remove non-particulate organic pollutants from stormwater

    • Urban runoff contains a mixture of both particulate and non-particulate organic pollutants (OPs). Hydrophobic OPs such as higher petroleum hydrocarbons, phthalates, and polycyclic organic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are not exclusively bound to particles, but also present in runoff in colloidal and truly dissolved forms. These hydrophobic compounds can also form nano- and microsized emulsions that may carry pollutants in stormwater. Hence, it is of great importance to develop treatment technologies such as sorption filters that can remove non-particulate OPs from contaminated stormwater. A pilot plant using column bed-filters of sand as a pre-filter, in combination with granulated activated carbon, Sphagnum peat or Pinus sylvestris bark, was used to investigate the removal of non-particulate OPs from urban stormwater. Samples from the filter effluents were collected weekly; during or after rain events; and during stress tests when incoming water was spiked with contaminated sediment and petrol or diesel. All sorption filters showed efficient reduction of aliphatic diesel hydrocarbons C16–C35, benzene, and the PAHs phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and pyrene during most of the operation time, which was 18 months. During the stress test events, all sorption filters showed 100% reduction of PAH-16, petrol and diesel aliphatics C5–C35. All sorption filters released DOC and nanoparticles, which may explain some of the transportation of OPs through the filter beds. The recommendation is to use a combination of sand pre-filtration and all the studied sorption materials in stormwater filters in series, to achieve effective removal of different types of OPs. It is also important to improve the hydraulic conditions to obtain sufficient water flows through the filters.

  • Design, operation and analysis of wind-assisted cargo ships

    • This study presents a novel approach to analytically capture aero- and hydrodynamic interaction effects on wind-assisted ships. Low aspect ratio wing theory is applied and modified to be used for the prediction of lift and drag forces of hulls sailing at drift angles. Aerodynamic interaction effects are captured by analytically solving the Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible, potential flow. The developed methods are implemented to a 4 degrees-of-freedom performance prediction model called “ShipCLEAN”, including a newly developed method for rpm control of Flettner rotors on a ship to maximize fuel savings. The accuracy of the model is proven by model- and full-scale verification. To present the variability of the model, two case study ships, a tanker and a RoRo, are equipped with a total of 11 different arrangements of Flettner rotors. The fuel savings and payback times are assessed using realistic weather from ships traveling on a Pacific Ocean route (tanker) and Baltic Sea route (RoRo). The results verify the importance of using a 4 degrees-of-freedom ship performance model, aero- and hydrodynamic interaction and the importance of controlling the rpm of each rotor individually. Fuel savings of 30% are achieved for the tanker, and 14% are achieved for the RoRo.

  • Two-dimensional mutually synchronized spin Hall nano-oscillator arrays for neuromorphic computing

    • In spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs), pure spin currents drive local regions of magnetic films and nanostructures into auto-oscillating precession. If such regions are placed in close proximity to each other they can interact and may mutually synchronize. Here, we demonstrate robust mutual synchronization of two-dimensional SHNO arrays ranging from 2 × 2 to 8 × 8 nano-constrictions, observed both electrically and using micro-Brillouin light scattering microscopy. On short time scales, where the auto-oscillation linewidth Δ f is governed by white noise, the signal quality factor, Q= f∕ Δ f, increases linearly with the number of mutually synchronized nano-constrictions (N), reaching 170,000 in the largest arrays. We also show that SHNO arrays exposed to two independently tuned microwave frequencies exhibit the same synchronization maps as can be used for neuromorphic vowel recognition. Our demonstrations may hence enable the use of SHNO arrays in two-dimensional oscillator networks for high-quality microwave signal generation and ultra-fast neuromorphic computing.

  • Oligoamine ionic liquids supported on mesoporous microspheres for CO2 separation with good sorption kinetics and low cost

    • Ionic liquids display good CO2 absorption capacity but poor absorption kinetics and high costs. In the present work, we show that these problems can be solved by impregnating the new low cost ionic liquid pentaethylenehexammonium chloride [PEHA][Cl] and the corresponding amine precursor on a low cost mesoporous microsphere support. Nitrogen adsorption/ desorption, high-resolution SEM and thermogravimetric analysis were employed to analyze the structural and thermal properties of the prepared sorbents. The CO2 adsorption and desorption performance was studied by column experiments and mathematical models were fitted to the data. The results showed that sorbents displayed excellent sorption kinetics and capacity, comparable to the best reports in the literature. In addition, the sorbents could be regenerated and displayed high thermal stability. Finally, the costs of the sorbents developed in the present work is much lower than previously reported sorbents. Therefore this novel supported IL system could be promising for industrial CO2 removal and recovery applications.
