    • Urban Living Labs (ULL) have become a common way to address wicked design challenges within the future mobility, and smart city context. The move toward ULL is part of a paradigm shift away from focusing purely on the IT-artifact, innovation, and user-centeredness toward focusing on the urban context and the construction of a place as a social context rather than implementation of a product or service in isolation.This shift requires diverse sets of stakeholders with different backgrounds to come together to address wicked design challenges collaboratively tied to specific urban contexts. However, the change toward ULLs also brings unique qualities to collaborations. For example, it is often hard to generalize or transfer findings from one ULL to another. In addition, it requires new modes of thinking and acting concerning the value of bottomup approaches anchored in context.Therefore, a core challenge for impactful work in an ULL, is to find ways to retain stakeholders’ local engagements and ways of doing collaborative design beyond the ULL project to create ripple effects. This thesis tweaks this challenge into a question that aims at investigating what a locally contextualized ULL set-up means for the involved stakeholders from a participatory perspective by asking: How can we understand engagement in ULL co-design, and how can this engagement be retained beyond the Living Lab? The question was explored through a design ethnographic approach in a ULL, where citizens, city representatives, car manufacturers, and representatives from public transport worked together to explore future mobility services. The research question is addressed through a description of how stakeholder engagement played out in the ULL along with an analysis of the dynamics of co-design as a co-appropriation process within the ULL, which enabled stakeholders to engage in a social context across sectors and disciplines to co-learn ways of appropriating findings from the ULL as an explorative way of working. Co-appropriation is described as a process moving from acclimatization towards cogitation in co-design, with patching as an activity that supports the process. The thesis also elaborates on how findings from a ULL can be retained and scaled beyond the Living Lab through transformation games, as an example of a patching activity.

  • Exploring Road Traffic Interactions Between Highly Automated Vehicles and Vulnerable Road Users

    • Understandings of road traffic interactions are largely based on human-human interactions. However, the development of vehicles controlled by highly auto- mated driving systems (ADS) would introduce a radically novel type of road user. This compilation thesis explores encounters between these “autonomous vehicles” (AVs) and human vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as pedestrians and cyclists. The included publications are connected to three research questions. First, empirical studies are reviewed to highlight existing interactive be- haviors and communication cues. This is followed by a methodological question of how to investigate AV-VRU interactions. Finally, VRUs’ experiences from initial experiments on AV crossing encounters are presented.While road user trajectories and kinematic behaviors are viewed as primary mechanisms to facilitate traffic interactions, they might also be influenced by cues such as appearances, gestures, eye-gaze, and external human-machine interfaces (eHMI). Using the Wizard-of-Oz approach, we are able to explore VRU encounters with a seemingly highly automated vehicle. Compared to meeting an attentive driver, AV encounters resulted in a reported lower willingness to cross, lower perceived safety, and less calm emotional state, indicating that the absence of driver-centric cues could lead to interaction issues and impede acceptance of AVs. To further explore this, we included light-based eHMI to signal the driving mode and intent of the vehicle (e.g., intent to yield). Future research should continue to investigate how AVs may co-exist with human road users focusing on aspects such as behavioral adaptations, research methodologies, and the role of various eHMI.

  • Organizational Agility and Digital Innovation Capability in Automotive Startups

    • Existing research on organizational agility has primarily focused on large com- panies. This research tends to reference startups as the truly agile organizations, and it is assumed that large established corporations have much to learn from startups, especially for digital innovation. However, little research has studied startups with an organizational agility lens to identify how startups develop organizational agility and what enables and hinders such agility. There is a need to better understand how startups use organizational agility to gain leverage in digital innovation.This licentiate thesis is based on three papers, where each paper focuses on one aspect of organizational agility, and aims to answer the research question: How do startups use organizational agility to gain leverage in digital innovation?A qualitative approach was applied, and two interview studies were conducted in the automotive products and services domain. This domain was chosen be- cause it has recently been challenged by newcomers with very different strategies for innovation and the automotive incumbents are now struggling to transform into agile enterprises. Subsequently, it became possible to identify differences in how organizational agility is applied in digital innovation in large companies and startups. The first study included three incumbents and two in- ternational startups, and the second study included nine startups. The startups included in the two studies were located in Sweden and one startup in the USA (active in Sweden). 23 semi-structured interviews were conducted, which en- abled us to gain a richer and more in-depth understanding about how startups develop and applied organizational agility in their digital innovation initiatives. An initial literary study helped identify core dimensions of organizational agil- ity that were empirically investigated. Organizational agility as an analytic lens was operationalized using different frameworks to support our analysis work.The concluding analysis showed differences between startups' ability to use organizational agility in digital innovation. The startups had different ap- proaches to digital innovation and the analysis shows different types of organ- izational agility. The startups that applied an agile culture, visionary and trans- formative approach (effectuation logic) and open innovation, were the most successful when it came to keeping a high digital innovation pace compared with the other startups in this study. Based on the analysis of how organization-Page 2 of 167al agility affected the studied companies' digital innovation capability, we iden- tified four ideal types of startup organizational agility: digital industrial, digital complementary, digital exploiter, and digital disrupter. In Digital industrial, the value of organizational agility is less exploited because it applies a planning approach and a unilateral technical focus with a vague business model, leading to a low digital innovation capability. In Digital complementary, the value of organizational agility is utilized while applying a planning approach, focusing on in-depth technical research where the value, once integrated into a customer product, can lead to a high digital innovation capability. In Digital exploiter, the value of organizational agility is fully utilized while applying a visionary and adaptive approach, focusing on the rapid exploitation of market-driven digital services applied but can lead to low digital innovation capability. In Digital disrupter, the value of organizational agility is optimally utilized by using a visionary and transformative strategy, focusing on in-depth and rapid explora- tion in innovation ecosystems or networks, which leads to high digital innova- tion capability.The research contributes to practice and the theory of organizational agility by showing how the various aspects of organizational agility impact the organiza- tions' digital innovation capability.

  • Continuous Finding Problems and Implementing Solutions in Health Care-Associated Infections : The Role of Infection Preventionists

    • This licentiate thesis aims to understand how infection preventionists (IPs) continuously find problems and implement solutions related to health care-associated infections (HAIs) in hospital settings.HAIs are infections acquired by patients during the process of care and are among the main causes of deaths worldwide. Recently, practices for HAIs prevention and control have challenged IPs due to pandemics (e.g. COVID-19), antimicrobial resistance, population aging and limited resources in health care facilities. Such challenges demand actions to find, solve problems and implement solutions. However, IPs often fail to address these problems. The reasons stem from their inability to timely identify valuable problems and implement new solutions. Although the literature on infection prevention and control is well developed, previous studies have largely investigated how IPs implement preconceived practices to solve given problems as a single event, rather than on how to continuously find problems and implement solutions. This licentiate thesis comprises two empirical papers. Paper I investigates how infection prevention and control teams find problems with HAIs, and is based on a multiple case study of three infection prevention and control teams from one Swedish and two Brazilian hospitals. Paper II investigates how IPs continuously implement changes in infection prevention and control practices during pandemics, and is based on a qualitative descriptive study. The data in both papers were collected from 44 semi-structured interviews with health care professionals enrolled as IPs in Brazilian and Swedish hospitals. The key theories and literatures covered include Problem-Finding and Problem-Solving Perspective and Implementation research.This licentiate thesis contains three main contributions. First, it advances the Problem-Finding and Problem-Solving Perspective literature by providing empirical evidence on how to create valuable knowledge from ill-structured and complex problems. Second, this licentiate thesis suggests a distinction between HAI prevention and HAI control based on two modes of decision-making for finding valuable problems with HAIs. Third, the licentiate thesis describes and categorizes sets of practices that allow to continuously implement changes of infection prevention and control practices during pandemics.

  • International Branding and Rebranding in Cross-Border Acquisitions

    • Businesses worldwide are confronting a more internationalized market. With this trend, companies frequently turn to international branding and rebranding initiatives through the acquisition of companies to grow. During this process, businesses are updating their brand identity and/or strategy, while also dealing with various challenges. Studies focusing on these challenges on the B2B field remain little explored and are necessary, due to its highly competitive characteristic. Especially in the life science industry, due to its institutional differences between national markets in the sector. Therefore, the overall research purpose in this licentiate thesis is to describe and understand how the international branding and rebranding process is developed in the life science industry. In this thesis, two studies were made to achieve this purpose. One literature review to explore the current literature of the field and one empirical study using a single case study method. The main contribution of this licentiate thesis is to describe in-depth how the brand rebranding process is implemented in the life science industry, and its main hinders. They are: internal and external legitimation. More importantly, this study presents a framework that demonstrates how businesses in emerging regions face more external legitimation challenges as a result of institutional constraints, as opposed to developed countries, where internal legitimation barriers are more prominent during the rebranding process. This licentiate thesis contributes to creating knowledge in international branding since it provides an overview of the past years of research in the area and suggests research gaps that need further investigation. In parallel, it generates insights into the analyzed process of international branding and rebranding, bringing understanding into the corporate brand area and the management of B2B brands in life science industries.
