  • Net Society. Content Creation in Broadband Systems
  • 2000
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The development of a broadband application which integrates TV, Internet, picture telephones etc has been going on for several years within Telia, Sweden's leading telecom operator. The prototype solutions have been developed from a vision of how the distant communication of the future could function. Results of a qualitative study of how the prototype is perceived by consumers and service providers are presented. Compared to the Internet, the NNS prototype was perceived as being simpler, less confusing, faster to navigate and suited for all kinds of people. This paper has two aims: to provide an inspiration for new applications in a broadband environment, and to indicate problems connected with presenting content in a broadband environment.

  • Cooperation, dialogue and ethics
  • 2000
  • In: International journal of human-computer studies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1071-5819 .- 1095-9300. ; 53:6, s. 871-914
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper describes some of the basic cooperative mechanisms of dialogue. Ideal cooperation is seen as consisting of four features (cognitive consideration, joint purpose, ethical consideration and trust), which can also to some extent be seen as requirements building on each other. Weaker concepts such as ‘coordination’ and ‘collaboration’ have only some of these features or have them to lesser degrees. We point out the central role of ethics and trust in cooperation, and contrast the result with popular AI accounts of collaboration. Dialogue is also seen as associated with social activities, in which certain obligations and rights are connected with particular roles. Dialogue is seen to progress through the written, vocal or gestural contributions made by participants. Each of the contributions has associated with it both expressive and evocative functions, as well as specific obligations for participants. These functions are dependent on the surface form of a contribution, the activity and the local context, for their interpretation. We illustrate the perspective by analyzing dialogue extracts from three different activity types (a travel dialogue, a quarrel and a dialogue with a computer system). Finally, we consider what kind of information is shared in dialogue, and the ways in which dialogue participants manifest this sharing to each other through linguistic and other communicative behaviour. The paper concludes with a comparison to other accounts of dialogue and prospects for integration of these ideas within dialogue systems.

  • 2000
  • In: Canadian Journal of Environmental Education. - 1205-5352. ; 5:1, s. 77-92
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper explores the roots of the Scandinavian outdoor lifestyle of Friluftsliv and its philosophical implication as well as its applications for environmental education. Friluftsliv as a philosophy is deeply rooted in Norway and Sweden but has lately obtained a more a superficial meaning by the commercialisation of outdoor activities. The philosophy and biology of is explored showing its importance as a mean in environmental education to facilitate a true connectedness to the more-than-human world.

  • Awareness of Presence, Instant Messaging and WebWho
  • 2000
  • In: ACM SlGGROUP Bulletin. ; 21:3, s. 21-27
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report from a study of how awareness of presence can affect instant messaging behavior. WebWho is a web based awareness system that visualizes where people are located in a large university computer lab. It allows students to virtually locate one another and, among other functions, to communicate via an instant messaging system. Typically, instant messages are signed with the sender's name, but messages can also be sent anonymously. The students use the messaging system to support collaborative work and coordinate social activities, as well as for playfid behavior. We have performed analyses of messages logs with respect to sender location, anonymous or not, and message content. Results show that awareness of both physical presence, i.e. when both when sender and recipient share the same room, and virtual presence, mediated via WebWho, affect the message contents.

  • Rorschach’s idea of a “movement” response in the light of recent philosophy and psychology of perception
  • 2000
  • In: Rorschachiana. Yearbook of the International Rorschach Society. - 1192-5604. ; 24, s. 1-27
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The proper definition of the kinesthetic or movement (M) category has been the subject of many controversies within the Rorschach community; see, for example, the discussion between Kramer and Exner (Kramer, 1991; Exner, 1991). The present paper elucidates the nature of movement responses by means of a theoretical analysis of some of the key concepts involved. This analysis in part is of a philosophical character, but I also bring in several recent results from the psychology and neurophysiology of perception which in my opinion are crucial to a correct understanding of the movement responses. The first two parts of the essay describe the basic controversy between those Rorschach theorists who – like Hermann Rorschach himself and Ewald Bohm – hold that kinesthetic identification is a necessary ingredient in any movement response, and those – like John Exner – who want to drop this condition from the definition. This controversy is shown to involve another fundamental issue, namely: In what sense is movement a determinant, and what should be meant by a determinant? The third section also discusses a main objection against keeping Rorschach’s original definition: its reliance on introspective criteria. The fourth part takes a historical perspective, describing the philosophical and psychological tradition called associationism, discussing certain ideas concerning kinesthetic sensibility brought forward within that tradition, and finally analyzing the nature and extent of Hermann Rorschach’s commitment to associationism, especially as manifested in his doctoral dissertation. Some main elements of the 20th-century psychological and philosophical critique of associationism are outlined in Sections 5–6, and the relevance of this critique for the definition of a movement response is explained. Converging evidence from different sources, such as child psychology and clinical and primate neuropsychology, is then brought together in Section 7 to show that recent work on perception supports Hermann Rorschach’s basic intuition about the M category. In Section 8, a new definition of movement responses is given in terms of practical perception and immediate visuo-motor couplings. Finally, in Section 9, the possible use of Rorschach data in the experimental analysis of motion-from-form perception is pointed out.

  • From the Persian Gulf to Kosovo - War journalism and propaganda
  • 2000
  • In: European Journal of Communication. - : SAGE Publications. - 0267-3231 .- 1460-3705. ; 15:3, s. 383-404
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The article reports findings from a pilot study of the discourse on Kosovo in four leading dailies from four countries: Greece, Norway, Sweden and the UK. A combined discourse and propaganda analysis approach is applied to the first three days' coverage of the NATO bombing campaign, with the aim of studying how the various national/local contexts influenced the media discourse's relationship to the propaganda discourse in the conflict. This problematic is relevant for the current discussion on globalization and superpower dominance in connection with transnational war journalism.
