  • Application of fracture mechanics to predict the failure load of adhesive joints used to bond CFRP laminates to steel members
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Construction and Building Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0950-0618 .- 1879-0526. ; 27:1, s. 331-340
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of bolted or welded elements to upgrade metallic structures has been a common practice for many years. Moreover, the use of adhesively bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates, as an alternative method, has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. One important aspect of the design of adhesive joints used to bond CFRP laminates to steel substrates is the determination of the properties of the CFRP/adhesive/steel interfaces, which have not yet been established in codes or standards. The purpose of this paper is experimentally to determine the fracture properties of the adhesive material and to evaluate the accuracy of numerical methods using this information, in order to predict the strength of adhesive joints in steel members bonded with CFRP laminates. The results from four series of experimental tests are compared with numerical results and discussed in terms of load-bearing capacity and failure modes.

  • Traffic flow in the operating room : An explorative and descriptive study on air quality during orthopedic trauma implant surgery
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Infection Control. - : Elsevier. - 0196-6553 .- 1527-3296. ; 40:8, s. 750-755
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background:Understanding the protective potential of operating room (OR) ventilation under different conditions is crucial to optimizing the surgical environment. This study investigated the air quality, expressed as colony-forming units (CFU)/m³, during orthopedic trauma surgery in a displacementventilated OR; explored how traffic flow and the number of persons present in the OR affects the air contamination rate in the vicinity of surgical wounds; and identified reasons for door openings in the OR.Methods:Data collection, consisting of active air sampling and observations, was performed during 30 orthopedic procedures. Results:In 52 of the 91 air samples collected (57%), the CFU/m³ values exceeded the recommended level of <10 CFU/m³. In addition, the data showed a strongly positive correlation between the total CFU/m³ per operation and total traffic flow per operation (r=0.74;P=.001; n=24), after controlling for duration of surgery. A weaker, yet still positive correlation between CFU/m³ and the number of persons present in the OR (r=0.22;P=.04; n=82) was also found. Traffic flow, number of persons present, and duration of surgery explained 68% of the variance in total CFU/m³ (P=.001).Conclusions:Traffic flow has a strong negative impact on the OR environment. The results of this study support interventions aimed at preventing surgical site infections by reducing traffic flow in the OR.

  • Impact of information exchange on supplier forecasting performance
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Omega. - : Elsevier. - 0305-0483 .- 1873-5274. ; 40:6, s. 738-747
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Forecasts of demand are crucial to drive supply chains and enterprise resource planning systems. Usually, well-known univariate methods that work automatically such as exponential smoothing are employed to accomplish such forecasts. The traditional Supply Chain relies on a decentralized system where each member feeds its own Forecasting Support System (FSS) with incoming orders from direct customers. Nevertheless, other collaboration schemes are also possible, for instance, the Information Exchange framework allows demand information to be shared between the supplier and the retailer. Current theoretical models have shown the limited circumstances where retailer information is valuable to the supplier. However, there has been very little empirical work carried out. Considering a serially linked two-level supply chain, this work assesses the role of sharing market sales information obtained by the retailer on the supplier forecasting accuracy. Weekly data from a manufacturer and a major UK grocery retailer have been analyzed to show the circumstances where information sharing leads to improved forecasting accuracy. Without resorting to unrealistic assumptions, we find significant evidence of benefits through information sharing with substantial improvements in forecast accuracy.
