  • Modeling of exhaust gas cleaning by acid pollutant conversion to aerosol particles
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Fuel. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-2361 .- 1873-7153. ; 290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sulfur and nitrogen oxides (SOx and NOx) are harmful pollutants emitted into the atmosphere by industry and transport sectors. In addition to being hazardous gases, SOx and NOx form sulfuric and nitric acids which contribute to the formation of airborne particulate matter through nucleation and condensation, hence magnifying the environmental impact of these species. In this work, we build a modeling framework for utilizing this phenomenon for low-temperature exhaust gas cleaning. It has been reported that ammonia gas can be used to facilitate particle formation from the aforementioned acids, and thus remove these gaseous pollutants by converting them into ammonium sulfate and nitrate particles. Here we provide comprehensive modeling tools for applying this idea to exhaust gas cleaning by combining detailed models for nucleation, gas-particle mass exchange and particle population dynamics. We demonstrate how these models can be used to find advantageous operating conditions for a cleaning unit. In particular, the full model is computationally cheap and enables optimization of the particle formation efficiency and particle growth, hence ensuring sufficient conversion of gaseous pollutants into collectable particulate matter. This constitutes a ground for future engineering tools for designing next-generation sustainable exhaust gas cleaners.

  • Impacts of fuel quality on indoor environment onboard a ship: From policy to practice
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Part D-Transport and Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1361-9209 .- 1879-2340. ; 83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental considerations, concerning the negative impacts of ship exhaust gases and particles on ambient air quality, are behind the requirements of cleaner marine fuels currently applied in designated emission control areas (ECAs). We investigated the impact of a ship operating on two types of fuel on the indoor air quality onboard. Gaseous and particulate air pollutants were measured in the engine room and the accommodation sections on-board an icebreaker operating first on Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO, 1%-S), and later Marine Diesel Oil (MDO, 0.1%-S). Statistically significant decrease of SO2, NOx, PM2.5 and particle number concentration were observed when the ship was operating on MDO. Due to the higher content of alkylated PAHs in MDO compared to HFO, the concentration of PAHs increased during operation on MDO. The particulate PAHs classified as carcinogens, were similar to or lower in the MDO campaign. Chemical analysis of PM2.5 revealed that the particles consisted mainly of organic carbon and sulfate, although the fraction of metals was quite large in particles from the engine room. Principal Component Analysis of all measured parameters showed a clear difference between HFO and MDO fuel on the indoor environmental quality on-board the ship. This empirical study poses a first example on how environmental policy-making impacts not only the primary target at a global level, but also brings unexpected localized benefits at workplace level. The study emphasizes the need of further investigations on the impact of new marine fuels and technologies on the indoor air environments on board.

  • A Biomimetic Evolvable Organic Electrochemical Transistor
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Electronic Materials. - : Wiley. - 2199-160X. ; 7:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biomimicry at the hardware level is expected to overcome at least some of the challenges, including high power consumption, large footprint, two-dimensionality, and limited functionality, which arise as the field of artificial intelligence matures. One of the main attributes that allow biological systems to thrive is the successful interpretation of and response to environmental signals. Taking inspiration from these systems, the first demonstration of using multiple environmental inputs to trigger the formation and control the growth of an evolvable synaptic transistor is reported here. The resulting transistor exhibits long-term changes in the channel conductance at a fixed gate voltage. Biomimetic logic circuits are investigated based on this evolvable transistor that implement temperature and pressure inputs to achieve higher order processes like self-regulation of synaptic strength and coincidence detection.

  • Stochastic modelling of 3D fiber structures imaged with X-ray microtomography
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Computational materials science. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0927-0256 .- 1879-0801. ; 194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many products incorporate into their design fibrous material with particular levels of permeability as a way to control the retention and flow of liquid. The production and experimental testing of these materials can be expensive and time consuming, particularly if it needs to be optimised to a desired level of absorbency. We consider a parametric virtual fiber model as a replacement for the real material to facilitate studying the relationship between structure and properties in a cheaper and more convenient manner. 3D image data sets of a sample fibrous material are obtained using X-ray microtomography and the individual fibers isolated. The segmented fibers are used to estimate the parameters of a 3D stochastic model for generating softcore virtual fiber structures. We use several spatial measures to show the consistency between the real and virtual structures, and demonstrate with lattice Boltzmann simulations that our virtual structure has good agreement with respect to the permeability of the physical material. © 2021 The Author(s)

  • Non-destructive strength testing of microindented float glass by a nonlinear acoustic method
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Construction and Building Materials. - 0950-0618 .- 1879-0526. ; 391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present paper describes a method for non-destructive testing of the glass strength. Square 10 × 10 cm2 samples of annealed float glass was inflicted with a controlled defect in the centre of the atmospheric side using Vickers microindentation-induced cracking with a force of 2 N, 5 N and 10 N and compared to an un-indented reference. The samples were non-destructively tested using a nonlinear acoustic wave method resulting in defect values. The average of the defect values was found to linearly correlate to the indentation force in a log–log relationship. The samples were subsequently tested in a ring-on-ring setup that allows for an equibiaxial stress state. The indentation-induced cracking gave practically realistic strength values in the range of 45 to 110 MPa. The individual sample values for failure stress as a function of normalized defect value show linear trends with approximately half of the data within 95% confidence limit. In summary, this study provides an initial proof-of-concept for a non-destructive testing of the strength of glass.

  • Tracking 14C-labeled organic micropollutants to differentiate between adsorption and degradation in GAC and biofilm processes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : The American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 55:16, s. 11318-11327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Granular activated carbon (GAC) filters can be used to reduce emissions of organic micropollutants via municipal wastewater, but it is still uncertain to which extent biological degradation contributes to their removal in GAC filters. 14C-labeled organic micropollutants were therefore used to distinguish degradation from adsorption in a GAC-filter media with associated biofilm. The rates and extents of biological degradation and adsorption were investigated and compared with other biofilm systems, including a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) and a sand filter, by monitoring 14C activities in the liquid and gas phases. The microbial cleavage of ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and mecoprop was confirmed for all biofilms, based on the formation of 14CO2, whereas the degradation of 14C-labeled moieties of sulfamethoxazole and carbamazepine was undetected. Higher degradation rates for diclofenac were observed for the GAC-filter media than for the other biofilms. Degradation of previously adsorbed diclofenac onto GAC could be confirmed by the anaerobic adsorption and subsequent aerobic degradation by the GAC-bound biofilm. This study demonstrates the potential use of 14C-labeled micropollutants to study interactions and determine the relative contributions of adsorption and degradation in GAC-based treatment systems.

  • Transient nucleation in selective laser melting of Zr-based bulk metallic glass
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Materials & design. - : Elsevier. - 0264-1275 .- 1873-4197. ; 195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The crystallization rate during selective laser melting (SLM) of bulk metallic glasses (BMG) is a critical factor in maintaining the material's amorphous structure. To increase the understanding of the interplay between the SLM process and the crystallization behavior of BMGs, a numerical model based on the classical nucleation theory has been developed that accounts for the rapid temperature changes associated with SLM. The model is applied to SLM of a Zr-based BMG and it is shown that the transient effects, accounted for by the model, reduce the nucleation rate by up to 15 orders of magnitude below the steady-state nucleation rate on cooling, resulting in less nuclei during the build process. The capability of the proposed modelling approach is demonstrated by comparing the resulting crystalline volume fraction to experimental findings. The agreement between model predictions and the experimental results clearly suggests that transient nucleation effects must be accounted for when considering the crystallization rate during SLM processing of BMGs.

  • Quasi-Herglotz functions and convex optimization
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Royal Society Open Science. - : The Royal Society Publishing. - 2054-5703. ; 7:1, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce the set of quasi-Herglotz functions and demonstrate that it has properties useful in the modelling of non-passive systems. The linear space of quasi-Herglotz functions constitutes a natural extension of the convex cone of Herglotz functions. It consists of differences of Herglotz functions and we show that several of the important properties and modelling perspectives are inherited by the new set of quasi-Herglotz functions. In particular, this applies to their integral representations, the associated integral identities or sum rules (with adequate additional assumptions), their boundary values on the real axis and the associated approximation theory. Numerical examples are included to demonstrate the modelling of a non-passive gain medium formulated as a convex optimization problem, where the generating measure is modelled by using a finite expansion of B-splines and point masses.

  • Small-molecule activation of OGG1 increases oxidative DNA damage repair by gaining a new function
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Science. - Stockholm : American Association for the Advancement of Science. - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 376:6600, s. 1471-1476
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oxidative DNA damage is recognized by 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) DNA glycosylase 1 (OGG1), which excises 8-oxoG, leaving a substrate for apurinic endonuclease 1 (APE1) and initiating repair. Here, we describe a small molecule (TH10785) that interacts with the phenylalanine-319 and glycine-42 amino acids of OGG1, increases the enzyme activity 10-fold, and generates a previously undescribed b,d-lyase enzymatic function. TH10785 controls the catalytic activity mediated by a nitrogen base within its molecular structure. In cells, TH10785 increases OGG1 recruitment to and repair of oxidative DNA damage. This alters the repair process, which no longer requires APE1 but instead is dependent on polynucleotide kinase phosphatase (PNKP1) activity. The increased repair of oxidative DNA lesions with a small molecule may have therapeutic applications in various diseases and aging. © 2022 The Authors, some rights reserved; exclusive licensee American Association for the Advancement of Science.
