  • Power and Load Optimization in Interference-Coupled Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Networks
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM). - : IEEE. - 9781538647271
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Towards energy savings in large-scale non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks, we investigate power and load optimization for multi-cell and multi-carrier NOMA systems in this paper. To capture the coupling relation of mutual interference among cells, firstly, we extend a load-coupling model from orthogonal multiple access (OMA) to NOMA networks. Next, with this analytical tool, we formulate the considered optimization problem in NOMA-based load-coupled systems, where optimizing load, power, and determining decoding order are the key aspects in the optimization. Theoretically, we prove that the minimum network energy consumption can be achieved by using all the time-frequency resources in each cell to deliver users' demand. To achieve the optimal load and enable efficient power optimization, we develop a power-adjustment algorithm. Numerical results demonstrate promising energy-saving gains of NOMA over OMA in large-scale cellular networks, in particular for the high-demand and resource-limited scenarios.

  • Symbol-level and multicast precoding for multiuser multiantenna downlink : A state-of-the-art, classification, and challenges
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1553-877X. ; 20:3, s. 1733-1757
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Precoding has been conventionally considered as an effective means of mitigating or exploiting the interference in the multiantenna downlink channel, where multiple users are simultaneously served with independent information over the same channel resources. The early works in this area were focused on transmitting an individual information stream to each user by constructing weighted linear combinations of symbol blocks (codewords). However, more recent works have moved beyond this traditional view by: 1) transmitting distinct data streams to groups of users and 2) applying precoding on a symbol-per-symbol basis. In this context, the current survey presents a unified view and classification of precoding techniques with respect to two main axes: 1) the switching rate of the precoding weights, leading to the classes of block-level and symbol-level precoding and 2) the number of users that each stream is addressed to, hence unicast, multicast, and broadcast precoding. Furthermore, the classified techniques are compared through representative numerical results to demonstrate their relative performance and uncover fundamental insights. Finally, a list of open theoretical problems and practical challenges are presented to inspire further research in this area1.1The concepts of precoding and beamforming are used interchangeably throughout this paper.

  • Load Coupling and Energy Optimization in Multi-Cell and Multi-Carrier NOMA Networks
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0018-9545 .- 1939-9359. ; 68:11, s. 11323-11337
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate energy optimization in multi-cell and multi-carrier non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. We apply a load-coupling model for NOMA networks to capture the coupling relation of mutual interference among cells. With this analytical tool, we formulate an energy minimization problem in a NOMA-based load-coupled system, where optimizing load-rate-power allocation, and determining decoding order and user grouping are the key aspects. Theoretically, we prove that the minimum consumed energy can be achieved by using all the time-frequency resources in each cell to deliver users' demand, and allowing all the users to share resource units. From a practical perspective, we consider three types of NOMA grouping schemes, i.e., all-user grouping, partitioned and non-partitioned grouping. We develop tailored solutions for each grouping scheme to enable efficient load-rate-power optimization. These three algorithmic components are embedded into a power-adjustment framework to provide energy-efficient solutions for NOMA networks. Numerical results demonstrate promising energy-saving gains of NOMA over orthogonal multiple access in large-scale cellular networks, in particular for high-demand and resource-limited scenarios. The results also show fast convergence of the proposed algorithms and demonstrate the effectiveness of the solutions.

  • Symbol-Level Precoding with Low Resolution DACs for Large-Scale Array MU-MIMO Systems
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE 19TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SIGNAL PROCESSING ADVANCES IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS (SPAWC). - : IEEE. - 9781538635124 ; , s. 671-675
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While (Multiple Input-Multiple Output) MIMO systems based on large-scale antenna arrays are seen as the solution to the continuously increasing demands in modern wireless systems, they require high hardware complexity and power consumption. To tackle this, solutions based on low resolution Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) / Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) have been developed in the literature where they mainly propose quantized versions of typical channel dependent linear precoding solutions. Alternatively, nonlinear Symbol level Precoding techniques have been recently proposed for downlink Multi User (MU)-MIMO systems with low resolution DACs that achieve significantly improved performance in several cases. The existing SLP approaches support only DACs of 1-bit resolution which result in significant performance degradations, especially when constellations with order greater than 4 are employed. To that end, in this work a novel SLP approach is developed that supports systems with DACs of any resolution and it is applicable for any type of constellation. As it is verified by the presented numerical results, the proposed approach exhibits significantly improved performance when constellations with order greater than 4 are employed and require reduced computational complexity, compared to the existing solutions for the 1-bit DAC case.

  • Resource Optimization With Load Coupling in Multi-Cell NOMA
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1536-1276 .- 1558-2248. ; 17:7, s. 4735-4749
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the problem of the interference among multiple simultaneous transmissions in the downlink channel of a multiantenna wireless system. A symbol-level precoding scheme is considered, in order to exploit the multiuser interference and transform it into useful power at the receiver side, through a joint utilization of the data information and the channel state information. In this context, this paper presents novel strategies that exploit the potential of symbol-level precoding to control the per-antenna instantaneous transmit power. In particular, the power peaks among the transmitting antennas and the instantaneous power imbalances across the different transmitted streams are minimized. These objectives are particularly relevant with respect to the nonlinear amplitude and phase distortions induced by the per-antenna amplifiers, which are important sources of performance degradation in practical systems. More specifically, this paper proposes two different symbol-level precoding approaches. The first approach performs a weighted per-antenna power minimization, under quality-of-service constraints and under a lower bound constraint on the per-antenna transmit power. The second strategy performs a minimization of the spatial peak-to-average power ratio, evaluated among the transmitting antennas. Numerical results are presented in a comparative fashion to show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques, which outperform the state-of-the-art symbol-level precoding schemes in terms of spatial peak-to-average power ratio, spatial dynamic range, and symbol error rate over nonlinear channels.

  • Multiple-input multiple-output symbol rate signal digital predistorter for non-linear multi-carrier satellite channels
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IET Communications. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology. - 1751-8628 .- 1751-8636. ; 9:16, s. 2053-2059
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A digital predistortion (DPD) scheme is presented for non-linear distortion mitigation in multi-carrier satellite communication channels. The proposed DPD has a multiple-input multiple-output architecture similar to data DPD schemes. However, it enhances the mitigation performance of data DPDs using a multi-rate processing algorithm to achieve spectrum broadening of non-linear operators. Compared to single carrier (single-input single-output) signal (waveform) DPD schemes, the proposed DPD has lower digital processing rate reducing the required hardware cost of the predistorter. The proposed DPD outperforms, in total degradation, both data and signal DPD schemes. Further, it performs closest to a channel bound described by an ideally mitigated channel with limited maximum output power.

  • Efficient Sum-Rate Maximization for Medium-Scale MIMO AF-Relay Networks
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1536-1276 .- 1558-2248. ; 15:9, s. 6400-6411
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider the problem of sum-rate maximization in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward relay networks with multi-operator. The aim is to design the MIMO relay amplification matrix (i.e., the relay beamformer) to maximize the achievable communication sum rate through the relay. The design problem for the case of single-antenna users can be cast as a non-convex optimization problem, which, in general, belongs to a class of NP-hard problems. We devise a method based on the minorization-maximization technique to obtain quality solutions to the problem. Each iteration of the proposed method consists of solving a strictly convex unconstrained quadratic program. This task can be done quite efficiently, such that the suggested algorithm can handle the beamformer design for relays with up to similar to 70 antennas within a few minutes on an ordinary personal computer. Such a performance lays the ground for the proposed method to be employed in medium-scale (or lower regime massive) MIMO scenarios.

  • Learning-Assisted Optimization for Energy-Efficient Scheduling in Deadline-Aware NOMA Systems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2473-2400. ; 3:3, s. 615-627
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we study a class of minimum-energy scheduling problems in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. NOMA is adopted to enable efficient channel utilization and interference mitigation, such that base stations can consume minimal energy to empty their queued data in presence of transmission deadlines, and each user can obtain all the requested data timely. Due to the high computational complexity in resource scheduling and the stringent execution-time constraints in practical systems, providing a time-efficient and high-quality solution to 5G real-time systems is challenging. The conventional iterative optimization approaches may exhibit their limitations in supporting online optimization. We herein explore a viable alternative and develop a learning-assisted optimization framework to improve the computational efficiency while retaining competitive energy-saving performance. The idea is to use deep-learning-based predictions to accelerate the optimization process in conventional optimization methods for tackling the NOMA resource scheduling problems. In numerical studies, the proposed optimization framework demonstrates high computational efficiency. Its computational time is insensitive to the input size. The framework is able to provide optimal solutions as long as the learning-based predictions satisfy a derived optimality condition. For the general cases with imperfect predictions, the algorithmic solution is error-tolerable and performance scaleable, leading the energy-saving performance close to the global optimum.

  • Codebook-Based Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter Wave Multiuser Systems
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 1053-587X .- 1941-0476. ; 65:20, s. 5289-5304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems, antenna architecture limitations make it difficult to apply conventional fully digital precoding techniques but call for low-cost analog radio frequency (RF) and digital baseband hybrid precoding methods. This paper investigates joint RF-baseband hybrid precoding for the downlink of multiuser multiantenna mmWave systems with a limited number of RF chains. Two performance measures, maximizing the spectral efficiency and the energy efficiency of the system, are considered. We propose a codebook-based RF precoding design and obtain the channel state information via a beam sweep procedure. Via the codebook-based design, the original system is transformed into a virtual multiuser downlink system with the RF chain constraint. Consequently, we are able to simplify the complicated hybrid precoding optimization problems to joint codeword selection and precoder design (JWSPD) problems. Then, we propose efficient methods to address the JWSPD problems and jointly optimize the RF and baseband precoders under the two performance measures. Finally, extensive numerical results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid precoders.

  • Reduced complexity satellite broadcast receiver with interference mitigation in correlated noise
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Satellite Communications And Networking. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 1542-0973 .- 1542-0981. ; 36:5, s. 402-415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent commercial trends towards using smaller dish antennas for satellite receivers and the growing density of broadcasting satellites necessitate the application of robust adjacent satellite interference cancellation schemes. This orbital density growth along with the wider beamwidth of a smaller dish have imposed an overloaded scenario at the satellite receiver, where the number of transmitting satellites exceeds the number of receiving elements at the dish antenna. To ensure successful operation in this practical scenario, we propose a satellite receiver that enhances signal detection from the desired satellite by mitigating the interference from neighboring satellites. Towards this objective, we propose an enhanced list-based group-wise search detection (E-LGSD) receiver under the assumption of spatially correlated additive noise. To further enhance detection performance, the proposed satellite receiver utilizes a newly designed whitening filter to remove the spatial correlation among the noise parameters, while also applying a preprocessor that maximizes the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. We exploit the structure of this filter and propose a reduced complexity LGSD (RC-LGSD) receiver. Extensive simulations under practical scenarios show that the proposed receiver enhances the performance of satellite broadcast systems in the presence of adjacent satellite interference compared with existing methods. Also, under pointing error, RC-LGSD exhibits similar behavior to that of the optimum receiver
