- Neste estudo são apresentadas as normas de associação livre de 16 palavras portuguesas para 3 faixas etárias de crianças – 3/4 anos, 7/8 anos e 11/12 anos – e adultos. As comparações efectuadas entre as faixas etárias revelaram uma diferença significativa entre os 3/4 anos e os 7/8 anos ao nível do número de associados obtidos, provavelmente atribuída a um aumento considerável do vocabulário nesta fase do desenvolvimento. Mudanças conceptuais na organização do conhecimento foram também analisadas, verificando-se nos pré-escolares associações que revelam relações funcionais e um predomínio de relações taxonómicas a partir dos 7/8 anos.

- The article discusses the design praxis in relation to the Peircean semiotics. It approaches the product as sign. The product should communicate its functions; it should emit its message. Its own form communicates. So to transmit messages in a creative way through the design is necessary to work the associations by similarity more intensely to obtain object-signs riches in information and analogies.

- The variable trust has become widely used in the social science research lately and few concepts seem to have attracted so much attention from such a broad variety of academic disciplines. In political science in the theories on social capital and political culture, emphasizing its importance for democracy, trust has been seen as an essential variable for the understanding of societies. In social capital theory the generalized interpersonal trust is often given a particularly important role to initiate virtuous circles of development in the societies. This paper will treat some of the different theories that are connected both to the definition and the effects of generalized trust and then issues connected to the uncertainty of the measurements of generalized trust.

- In this study of recent developments in Guinea Bissau Lars Rudebeck seeks to investigate how democratic rule emerges and functions in real life. His analysis extends far beyond the multi-party system and election procedures as he discusses contrasts in people's perceptions of democracy. He assesses their access to influential structures, the roles of civil and political society, of the military, and of international assistance and argues that complex power structures need to be addressed if democracy is to be consolidated.
