Micro- and System Architectures in the 1980's
1980
Reports (other academic/artistic) abstract
After approxirnate1y 30 years experience with microprogrammed control concepts, we find ourselves at an interesting turning point leading into the 1980's. Experience with various microprogrammed contro1 techniques has been obtained, some experience has been obtained in recent years in the redistribution of functions between various software and microarchitectureal levels and we have a better idea of methods of timing and synchronization. This know1ed~e together with the possibilities brought on by VLSI will meet in the 1980's and have several interesting effects upon system architecture at microarchitecture and higher architectural levels. We shall consider some of the opportunities and limitations of VLSI and their potential effects upon microarchitecture followed by a view of the future utilization of "programmed logic". More specifically, we shall be considering the structuring of logic, synchronization, microarchitecture characteristics, target machine properties and special purpose microprogrammed machines. Further, we shall touch upon relationships to function distribution, computer aided design and the possibilities for architectural synthesis.

Commentator : A computer model of verbalproduction
1982
In: Linguistics. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1613-396X .- 0024-3949. ; 20:9-10, s. 611-632
Journal article (peer-reviewed) abstract
The Commentator is a small-scale computer implementation of a model oftext production. The system simulates human behavior from the perceptionof events on a screen to the utterances. It is designed to allow anyone havingsome knowledge of Basic and access to a microcomputer to study the semantics of words (e.g. localization and movement predicates such asapproach, left/right, near, in front of, turn, overtake), pronouns, and sentence connectives such as however, also. The system also allows experimentation with different text strategies and systems of speech production. The system has practical applications in automatic commentators, talking robots, and similar systems often referred to in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
