  • Performance of the Load-in-the-Loop Single Op-Amp Voltage Controlled Current Source from the Op-Amp Parameters
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : Institute of Physics Publishing Ltd.. - 1742-6596 .- 1742-6588.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, Electrical Bioimpedance (EBI) methods have gained importance. These methods are often based on obtaining impedance spectrum in the range of β-dispersion, i.e. from a few kHz up to some MHz. To measure EBI a constant current is often injected and the voltage across the tissue under study (TUS) is recorded. Due to the performance of the current source influences the performance of the entire system, in terms of frequency range, several designs have been implemented and studied. In this paper the basic structure of a Voltage-Controlled Current Source (VCCS) based on a single Op-Amp in inverter configuration with a floating load, known as load-in-the-loop current source, is revisited and studied deeply. We focus on the dependence of the output impedance with the circuit parameters, i.e. the feedback resistor and the inverter-input resistor, and the Op-Amp main parameters, i.e. open loop gain, CMRR and input impedance. After obtaining the experimental results and comparing to the theoretical and simulated ones, they confirm the design under study can be a good solution for multi-frequency wideband EBI applications because of higher values of the output impedance than 100kΩ at 1MHz are obtained. Furthermore, an enhancement of the basic design, using a current conveyor as a first stage, is proposed, studied and implemented.

  • Conductive Polymer Films as Textrodes for Biopotential Sensing
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction: After several years of progresses in textile technology and wearable measurement instrumentation, applications of wearable textile-electronics systems are arising providing a stable background for commercial applications. So far, the available commercial solutions are centered on fitness applications and mostly based in the acquisition of heart rate through Textile Electrodes (Textrodes) based on metallic threads or on conductive rubber compounds. Methods and Materials: In this work a novel material approach is presented to produce Textrodes for acquisition of Electrocardiographic (ECG) signals using a conductive polypropylene (PP1386 from Premix, Finland) polymer material. The polymer was film extruded into thin films, and used as such in the Textrode. Conductive Polymer Films (CPF) have been used to produce Textrodes, and its measurement performance has been compared with the ECG signals obtained with commercial Textrode fabrics and conventional Ag/AgCl electrodes. In order to set up the same measurement conditions, a chest strap tailored to host the testing electrodes has been used. Results: The close resemblance of the ECG acquired with the textile fabric electrodes, the Ag/AgCl electrodes and the PP1386 CPF electrodes suggest that the Polymer Electrodes PP1386 are a feasible alternative to the current textile fabrics that use silver thread as conductive material and also to conductive rubber material. Discussion & Conclusion: The availability of the Conductive Polymer Electrode PP1386 in a film form allows the manufacturing of electrodes by conventional textile processes, like lamination or sewing, therefore facilitating the transition from lab prototyping to industrial manufacturing. Replacing the traditional silver thread as conductive element in the fabrication of Textrodes will definitely reduce the material cost per Textrode. Biocompatibility issues and manufacturability issues must be addressed but the exhibited functional performance is showing encouraging results.

  • Image Reconstruction in Microwave Tomography Using a Dielectric Debye Model
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. - 0018-9294 .- 1558-2531. ; 59:1, s. 156 - 166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, quantitative dielectric image reconstruction based on broadband microwave measurements is investigated. A time-domain-based algorithm is derived where Debye model parameters are reconstructed in order to take into account the strong dispersive behavior found in biological tissue. The algorithm is tested with experimental and numerical data in order to verify the algorithm and to investigate improvements in the reconstructed image resulting from the improved description of the dielectric properties of the tissue when using broadband data. The comparison is made in relation to the more commonly used conductivity model. For the evaluation, two examples were considered, the first was a lossy saline solution and the second was less lossy tap water. Both liquids are strongly dispersive and used as a background medium in the imaging examples. The results show that the Debye model algorithm is of most importance in the tap water for a bandwidth of more than 1.5 GHz. Also the saline solution exhibits a dispersive behavior but since the losses restrict the useful bandwidth, the Debye model is of less significance even if somewhat larger and stronger artifacts can be seen in the conductivity model reconstructions.

  • A Segmented Silicon Strip Detector for Photon-Counting Spectral Computed Tomography
  • 2012
  • Konstnärligt arbete (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Spectral computed tomography with energy-resolving detectors has a potential to improve the detectability of images and correspondingly reduce the radiation dose to patients by extracting and properly using the energy information in the broad x-ray spectrum. A silicon photon-counting detector has been developed for spectral CT and it has successfully solved the problem of high photon flux in clinical CT applications by adopting the segmented detector structure and operating the detector in edge-on geometry. The detector was evaluated by both the simulation and measurements. The effects of energy loss and charge sharing on the energy response of this segmented silicon strip detector with different pixel sizes were investigated by Monte Carlo simulation and a comparison to pixelated CdTe detectors is presented. The validity of spherical approximations of initial charge cloud shape in silicon detectors was evaluated and a more accurate statistical model has been proposed.A photon-counting energy-resolving application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) developed for spectral CT was characterized extensively by electrical pulses, pulsed laser and real x-ray photons from both the synchrotron and an x-ray tube. It has been demonstrated that the ASIC performs as designed. A noise level of 1.09 keV RMS has been measured and a threshold dispersion of 0.89 keV RMS has been determined. The count rate performance of the ASIC in terms of count loss and energy resolution was evaluated by real x-rays and promising results have been obtained. The segmented silicon strip detector was evaluated using synchrotron radiation. An energy resolution of 16.1% has been determined with 22 keV photons in the lowest flux limit, which deteriorates to 21.5% at an input count rate of 100 Mcps mm−2. The fraction of charge shared events has been estimated and found to be 11.1% for 22 keV and 15.3% for 30 keV. A lower fraction of charge shared events and an improved energy resolution can be expected by applying a higher bias voltage to the detector.

  • Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography with a photon-counting detector
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Medical physics (Lancaster). - : Wiley. - 0094-2405. ; 37:5, s. 2017-2029
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Spectral imaging is a method in medical x-ray imaging to extract information about the object constituents by the material-specific energy dependence of x-ray attenuation. In particular, the detectability of a contrast agent can be improved over a lumpy background. We have investigated a photon-counting spectral imaging system with two energy bins for contrast-enhanced mammography. System optimization and the potential benefit compared to conventional non-energy-resolved imaging was studied. Methods: A framework for system characterization was set up that included quantum and anatomical noise, and a theoretical model of the system was benchmarked to phantom measurements. Results: It was found that optimal combination of the energy-resolved images corresponded approximately to minimization of the anatomical noise, and an ideal-observer detectability index could be improved more than a factor of two compared to absorption imaging in the phantom study. In the clinical case, an improvement close to 80% was predicted for an average glandularity breast, and a factor of eight for dense breast tissue. Another 70% was found to be within reach for an optimized system. Conclusions: Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography is feasible and beneficial with the current system, and there is room for additional improvements.

  • Energy filtering with x-ray lenses: Optimization for photon-counting mammography
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Radiation Protection Dosimetry. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0144-8420 .- 1742-3406. ; 139, s. 339-342
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chromatic properties of the multi-prism and prism-array x-ray lenses (MPL and PAL) can potentially be utilized for efficient energy filtering and dose reduction in mammography. The line-shaped foci of the lenses are optimal for coupling to photon-counting silicon strip detectors in a scanning system. A theoretical model was developed and used to investigate the benefit of two lenses compared to an absorption-filtered reference system. The dose reduction of the MPL filter was 15% compared to the reference system at matching scan time, and the spatial resolution was higher. The dose of the PAL-filtered system was found to be 20% lower than for the reference system at equal scan time and resolution, and only 20% higher than for a monochromatic beam. An investigation of some practical issues remains, including the feasibility of brilliant-enough x-ray sources and manufacturing of a polymer PAL.

  • Flow Imaging: Cardiac Applications of 3D Cine Phase-Contrast MRI
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Current Cardiovascular Imaging Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1941-9074 .- 1941-9066. ; 4:2, s. 127-133
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global and regional blood flow dynamics are of pivotal importance to cardiac function. Fluid mechanical forces can affect hemolysis and platelet aggregation, as well as myocardial remodeling. In recent years, assessment of blood flow patterns based on time-resolved, three-dimensional, three-directional phase-contrast MRI (3D cine PC MRI) has become possible and rapidly gained popularity. Initially, this technique was mainly known for its intuitive and appealing visualizations of the cardiovascular blood flow. Most recently, the technique has begun to go beyond compelling images toward comprehensive and quantitative assessment of blood flow. In this article, cardiac applications of 3D cine PC MRI data are discussed, starting with a review of the acquisition and analysis techniques, and including descriptions of promising applications of cardiac 3D cine PC MRI for the clinical evaluation of myocardial, valvular, and vascular disorders.

  • Brain tumor modeling : glioma growth and interaction with chemotherapy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Graphic and Image Processing (ICGIP 2011). - : SPIE. ; 8285
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In last decade increasingly mathematical models of tumor growths have been studied, particularly on solid tumors which growth mainly caused by cellular proliferation. In this paper we propose a modified model to simulate the growth of gliomas in different stages. Glioma growth is modeled by a reaction-advection-diffusion. We begin with a model of untreated gliomas and continue with models of polyclonal glioma following chemotherapy. From relatively simple assumptions involving homogeneous brain tissue bounded by a few gross anatomical landmarks (ventricles and skull) the models have been expanded to include heterogeneous brain tissue with different motilities of glioma cells in grey and white matter. Tumor growth is characterized by a dangerous change in the control mechanisms, which normally maintain a balance between the rate of proliferation and the rate of apoptosis (controlled cell death). Result shows that this model closes to clinical finding and can simulate brain tumor behavior properly.

  • Cole Parameter Estimation from the Modulus of the Electrical Bioimpeadance for Assessment of Body Composition : A Full Spectroscopy Approach
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electrical Bioimpedance. - Oslo : University of Oslo. - 1891-5469. ; 2, s. 72-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Activities around applications of Electrical Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (EBIS) have proliferated in the past decade significantly. Most of these activities have been focused in the analysis of the EBIS measurements, which eventually might enable novel applications. In Body Composition Assessment (BCA) the most common analysis approach currently used in EBIS is based on the Cole function, which most often requires curve fitting. One of the most implemented approaches for obtaining the Cole parameters is performed in the impedance plane through the geometrical properties that the Cole function exhibit in such domain as depressed semi-circle. To fit the measured impedance data to a semi-circle in the impedance plane, obtaining the Cole parameters in an indirect and sequential manner has several drawbacks. Applying a Non-Linear Least Square (NLLS) iterative fitting on the spectroscopy measurement, obtains the Cole parameters considering the frequency information contained in the measurement. In this work, from experimental total right side EBIS measurements, the BCA parameters have been obtained to assess the amount and distribution of whole body fluids. The values for the BCA parameters have been obtained using values for the Cole parameters estimated with both approaches: circular fitting on the impedance plane and NLLS impedance-only fitting. The comparison of the values obtained for the BCA parameters with both methods confirms that the NLLS impedance-only is an effective alternative as Cole parameter estimation method in BCA from EBIS measurements. Using the modulus of the Cole function as the model for the fitting would eliminate the need for performing a phase detection in the acquisition process, simplifying the hardware specifications of the measurement instrumentation when implementing a bioimpedance spectrometer.
