  • A Corpus Stylistic Analysis of Development in Hemingway's Literary Production
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Hemingway Review. - : The Ernest Hemingway Foundation. - 1548-4815. ; 40:2, s. 71-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes an attempt at introducing the quantitative perspective available through corpus stylistics into the discussion regarding Hemingway's linguistic development throughout his career. By building a corpus of Hemingway's fiction, previous statements and research into the author's style are explored through part-of-speech tagging and diachronic presentations of data regarding word class distributions, sentence lengths, and lexical density. This method combines literary theory with contemporary advances in digital humanities to offer a nuanced investigation of underlying text patterns that are otherwise frequently overlooked.

  • Northern Crossings : Translation, Circulation and the Literary Semi-periphery
  • 2022
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This open access book uses Swedish literature and the Swedish publishing field as recurring examples to describe and analyse the role of the literary semi-peripheral position in world literature from various perspectives and on meso, micro and macro levels, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. This includes the role of translation in the semi-periphery and the conditions under which literature travels to and from that position. The focus is not on Sweden, as such, but rather on the semi-peripheral transitional space as exemplified by the Swedish case.Consisting of three co-written chapters, this study sheds light on what might be called the semi-peripheral condition or the semi-periphery as an area of transition. As part of the Cosmopolitan and Vernacular Dynamics in World Literatures series, it makes continuous use of the concepts of 'cosmopolitan' and 'vernacular' – or rather, the processual terms, cosmopolitanization and vernacularization – which provide an overall structure to the analysis of literature and literary phenomena. In this way, the authors show that the semi-periphery is an ideal point of departure to further the understanding of world literature, because it is a place where the cosmopolitan (the literary universal) and the vernacular (the rootedness in a particular culture or place) interact in ways that have not yet been thoroughly explored.

  • What can a corpus tell us about Apocalyptic/Dystopian Texts?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Broken Mirrors: Representations of Apocalypses and Dystopias in Popular Culture / edited by Joe Trotta, Zlatan Filipovic, Houman Sadri.. - London : Routledge. - 9780367235918 ; , s. 179-201
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dystopian stories and visions of the Apocalypse are nothing new; however in recent years there has been a noticeable surge in the output of this type of theme in literature, art, comic books/graphic novels, video games, TV shows, etc. The reasons for this are not exactly clear; it may partly be as a result of post 9/11 anxieties, the increasing incidence of extreme weather and/or environmental anomalies, chaotic fluctuations in the economy and the uncertain and shifting political landscape in the west in general. Investigating this highly topical and pervasive theme from interdisciplinary perspectives this volume presents various angles on the main topic through critical analyses of selected works of fiction, film, TV shows, video games and more.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • "Poets versus Actors Reading Poetry on Swedish Radio 2020–2021"Following the rise of the poet as the principal performer of his or her own work, in the second half of the 20th century, actors have been criticized for performing poetry as if acting on stage, or for focusing too much on conveying the lyric I. This primarily quantitative study investigates what prosodic differences there are between poets and actors reading poetry. The material consists of 276 readings from the Swedish public radio program Dagens dikt (The Daily Poem), from 2020 and 2021. A set of prosodic measures are produced for each recording with computational aid, and the groups are compared by using descriptive statistics. The differences found in terms of tempo and pausal patterns, though small, suggest that the actors read in a conventionally poetic, expressive style, while the poets are closer to a style typical of prose reading and conversational speech; this might be connected to differences between their respective repertoire – the poets reading newer, longer, and possibly more narrative texts. When it comes to pitch, there are more substantial differences: the poets are more monotonous and their tonal patterns more predictable, indicating a formal, less expressive style. These traits are associated with the highly stylized vocal cliché Poet Voice, which in turn is connected to poetological shifts in the last few decades. In both groups, however, younger individuals (born 1970 or later) and women, respectively, are the more monotonous and predictable; this might suggest a sociolinguistic trend not limited to poetry. Qualitative, close listening to a selection of readings largely confirms the findings of the quantitative investigation. While the frequently idiosyncratic poets tend to highlight form, such as rhythm and tonal repetitions, the actors rather try to convey the content of the poem, in accordance with prosodical and performative conventions.

  • Between Death and Resurrection : Dostoevsky's Notes from the House of the Dead on the Eve of the Peasant Emancipation
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is a study of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Notes from the House of the Dead (1860–1862), a semi-documentary rendition of life in a Siberian prison of the 1850s. The work is read against the background of the pivotal historical event coinciding with its writing and publication: the peasant emancipation of 1861. On the basis of materials from contemporary newspapers and periodicals, the dissertation proposes that the years 1857–1862 saw the evolution a public “discourse of liberation” characterized by the fluctuating use of specific symbolism. The act of emancipation is conceptualized as a civic “resurrection” of the Russian people, whose life under serfdom is equated with imprisonment in the “land of the dead.” This discourse of liberation is shown to intersect with Dostoevsky’s text, which incorporates and adapts its central metaphors. Thereby, the uncertainty of the public mood in the transitional period of the early emancipation era reinforces the fundamental ambivalence of Dostoevsky’s poetics: notes of joyous anticipation and triumph are carried over into the work along with strong undercurrents of doubt and disillusionment. The narrative progression towards resurrection, culminating in the book’s final scene of release from the “dead house” of the prison, is undercut and complicated by a network of parallels and resonances.House of the Dead is also examined in relation to the genre of Russian “peasant fiction” prevalent in the decade leading up to the emancipation. Dostoevsky is shown to meet the challenge of truthfully representing the peasant voice in literature both through documentary methods, employing the so-called “Siberian notebook” of his prison years, and through fictionalization, as in the interpolated short story “Akulka’s Husband.” The narration of “Akulka’s Husband” is interpreted as an expression of the frustrated struggle of the peasant voice towards clarity and self-understanding – an unfulfilled, stumbling verbal quest for mental emancipation. It is also argued that Dostoevsky drew on two genres of Russian folklore in order to create an authentic plot and mode of characterization for his “village tale:” the tragic ballad of wife murder and the comic dancing song about the cuckolded husband. The result is a dissonant tale filled with tension, where comedy acts as the catalyst for tragedy, and silence emerges as the chief medium for truth. Finally, the dissertation analyzes the role of popular laughter in House of the Dead, focusing on the multiple ambivalent episodes where comic performance is paired with violence. These episodes are linked with elements of traditional Russian laughter culture and folk theatre. Internally connected through a series of echoes and inversions, they are shown to be integral to the book’s dual trajectories of death and resurrection. In his renditions of comic spectacle, Dostoevsky reveals the existence of two forces of laughter: one destructive and corrupting, one creative and redemptive. While both rely on the irrational, convulsive and liberating nature of laughter, each is representative of a distinct potential in the human soul for damnation and salvation.

  • Hermandad y reescritura del mito de Isis y Osiris en la literatura española contemporánea
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Tintas: Quaderni di letterature iberiche e iberoamericane. - : Milano University Press. - 2240-5437. ; :10, s. 33-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to analyze the updating of the myth of Isis and Osiris in three works of Contemporary Spanish Literature, «Balada de un día de julio» (1921) by Federico García Lorca, «Pantomima» (1995) by Manuel Mantero and «El hechizo de Iris» (1999) by José María Merino. To carry out this study, concepts such as mytheme from myth criticism or ideal intertext will be used. Beyond the hypertextuality between the first written versions of the myth and these contemporary versions, the study shows how in contemporary texts the value of the siblinghood that sustains the myth of Isis and Osiris endures and is amplified.
