- This paper describes a novel language independent model for distribution of language entities, which allows for fine-grained instrumentation of entity consistency protocols on a per-entity basis. The model is implemented as a middleware component, designed to enhance arbitrary high-level programming languages with distribution support on the language entity level. The middleware library is extendable using internal interfaces to add new protocols over three different aspects of distribution.

- The present paper considers the definition of a class of hysteresis models, based on the superposition of play operators, which can be used to describe magnetic materials and superconductors. As a first step, the paper defines a class of non-local hysteresis models having an inverse operator in a closed form. That class specifies a Preisach model for which the exact inverse is defined. In this frame such a result is a generalization of the well-known result by Krejci. Moreover, a self-contained identification procedure is further addressed by using data measured either on magnetic materials and on superconductors.

High-Dimensional Nonlinear Diffusion Stochastic Pprocesses. Modelling for Engineering Applications

- This book is the first one devoted to high-dimensional (or large-scale) diffusion stochastic processes (DSPs) with nonlinear coefficients. These processes are closely associated with nonlinear Ito's stochastic ordinary differential equations (ISODEs) and with the space-discretized versions of nonlinear Ito's stochastic partial integro-differential equations. The latter models include Ito's stochastic partial differential equations (ISPDEs). The book presents the new analytical treatment which can serve as the basis of a combined, analytical-numerical approach to greater computational efficiency in engineering problems. A few examples discussed in the book include: the high-dimensional DSPs described with the ISODE systems for semiconductor circuits; the nonrandom model for stochastic resonance (and other noise-induced phenomena) in high-dimensional DSPs; the modification of the well-known stochastic-adaptive-interpolation method by means of bases of function spaces; ISPDEs as the tool to consistently model non-Markov phenomena; the ISPDE system for semiconductor devices; the corresponding classification of charge transport in macroscale, mesoscale and microscale semiconductor regions based on the wave-diffusion equation; the fully time-domain nonlinear-friction aware analytical model for the velocity covariance of particle of uniform fluid, simple or dispersed; the specific time-domain analytics for the long, non-exponential "tails" of the velocity in case of the hard-sphere fluid. These examples demonstrate not only the capabilities of the developed techniques but also emphasize the usefulness of the complex-system-related approaches to solve some problems which have not been solved with the traditional, statistical-physics methods yet. From this veiwpoint, the book can be regarded as a kind of complement to such books as "Introduction to the Physics of Complex Systems. The Mesoscopic Approach to Fluctuations, Nonlinearity and Self-Organization" by Serra, Andretta, Compiani and Zanarini, "Stochastic Dynamical Systems. Concepts, Numerical Methods, Data Analysis" and "Statistical Physics: An Advanced Approach with Applications" by Honerkamp which deal with physics of complex systems, some of the corresponding analysis methods and an innovative, stochastics-based vision of theoretical physics. To facilitate the reading by nonmathematicians, the introductory chapter outlines the basic notions and results of theory of Markov and diffusion stochastic processes without involving the measure-theoretical approach. This presentation is based on probability densities commonly used in engineering and applied sciences.

- The art form of manipulating vinyl records done by disc jockeys (DJs) is called scratching, and has become very popular since its start in the seventies. Since then turntables are commonly used as expressive musical instruments in several musical genres. This phenomenon has had a serious impact on the instrument-making industry, as the sales of turntables and related equipment have boosted. Despite of this, the acoustics of scratching has been barely studied until now. In this paper, we illustrate the complexity of scratching by measuring the gestures of one DJ during a performance. The analysis of these measurements is important to consider in the design of a scratch model.

How to measure the Mueller matrix of liquid-crystal cells

- The Mueller matrix is the transfer matrix in the Stokes algebra that describes the polarization of natural light. This matrix is very versatile for the task of characterizing the optical properties of liquid-crystal cells, since it can be used for comparison with theoretical calculations, the determination of material parameters and the modelling of the cell as an optical building block for technological use. We have constructed a Mueller-matrix spectrometer, with the ability to perform fast, dynamic measurements of the Mueller matrix of small areas of liquid-crystal cells throughout the visible range. To illustrate the potential of the instrument, dynamic measurements on a ferroelectric-liquid-crystal cell are presented and analysed. The optical measurements indicate that there is an asymmetry between the up and the down state, tilted smectic layers and polarization reversal initiated at the boundaries.

- High speed signal processing is often performed as a pipeline of functions on streams or blocks of data. In order to obtain both flexibility and performance, parallel, reconfigurable array structures are suitable for such processing. The array topology can be used both on the micro and macro-levels, i.e. both when mapping a function on a fine-grained array structure and when mapping a set of functions on different nodes in a coarse-grained array. We outline an architecture on the macro-level as well as explore the use of an existing, commercial, word level reconfigurable architecture on the micro-level. We implement an FFT algorithm in order to determine how much of the available resources are needed for controlling the computations. Having no program memory and instruction sequencing available, a large fraction, 70%, of the used resources is used for controlling the computations, but this is still more efficient than having statically dedicated resources for control. Data can stream through the array at maximum I/O rate, while computing FFTs. The paper also shows how pipelining of the FFT algorithm over a two-level reconfigurable array of arrays can be done in various ways, depending on the application demands.

- Scratching is a popular way of making music, turning the DJ into a musician. Normally scratching is done using a vinyl record, a turntable and a mixer. Vinyl manipulation is built up by a number of specialized techniques that have been analysed in a previous study. The present study has two main objectives. First is to better understand and model turntable scratching as performed by DJs. Second is to design a gesture controller for physical sound models, i.e. models of friction sounds. We attached sensors to a DJ equipment set-up. Then a DJ was asked to perform typical scratch gestures both isolated and in a musical context, i.e. as in a real performance. He also was asked to play with different emotions: sad, angry, happy and fearful. A model of the techniques used by the DJ was built based on the analysis of the collected data. The implementation of the model has been done in pd. The Radio Baton, with specially adapted gesture controllers, has been used for controlling the model. The system has been played by professional DJs in concerts.

- We consider an incremental redundancy (IR) type-II hybrid ARQ scheme based on multidimensional single parity check (SPC) product codes. Random interleaving is applied between dimensions, resulting in equivalent systematic, parallel or serially concatenated SPC codes. This enables larger interleavers and a larger range of overall code rates. The puncturing pattern used for IR transmissions of the concatenated SPC codes is chosen specifically to reduce decoder complexity for the hybrid ARQ scheme, activating only those constituent decoders for which parity bits have been received. Given the proposed puncturing pattern and a maximum number of allowable transmissions, an approach for determining the optimal number of parity bits per IR transmission in terms of maximizing the overall code rate, is suggested. With this strategy, each data frame is accepted following the transmission of a minimum number of parity bits.

- Scan-based silicon debug is a technique that can be used to help find design errors in prototype silicon more quickly. One part of this technique involves the inclusion of break-point modules during the design stage of the chip. This paper focuses on an innovative approach to automatically generate breakpoint modules by means of a breakpoint description language. This language is illustrated using an example, and experimental results are presented that show the efficiency and effectiveness of this new method for generating breakpoint hardware.
